Crochet Shamrock
This Crochet Shamrock is quick and easy to make with a small amount of velvet yarn! I love the color green and couldn’t resist picking up the Emerald color of Premier Yarn’s “Just Chenille” yarn – it’s so pretty! In the fall I created a similar project using velvet yarn and safety eyes, the “Easy Crochet Leaf” and thought it would be fun to have a shamrock with eyes and a smile, too!

Shamrock – a Famous Symbol of Ireland
Most people think of Ireland or St. Patrick’s Day when they see a green shamrock. And many people love to wear shamrocks on St. Patrick’s Day. Did you know that the word “shamrock” means “young clover” and is thought to have been used by St. Patrick to illustrate the Trinity. (Trinity is the term for God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.) If you look closely at a shamrock, you will see that it is made up of 3 heart shapes. I love this about shamrocks and decided to create this shamrock project with this in mind.

Stitches Used in the Crochet Shamrock
To make this Crochet Shamrock you only need to know a few basic crochet stitches: chain, slip stitch, and double crochet. I recommend using the velvet yarn because the pattern looks best with the texture of velvet but you can experiment with other fibers. I decided to use “googly eyes” because I liked the look of them better than “safety eyes” but this means they are not suitable to give to a young child. If you want to make your shamrocks for a small child, consider making the eyes out of small circles of black and white felt that you can sew onto your shamrock with matching sewing thread. 🙂

Small amount of velvet yarn
(I used Premier Yarn’s “Just Chenille” in Emerald, Salmon and Mint)
Small amount of black or pink cotton thread (Size 3)
Optional: Short length of ribbon

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
YO (yarn over)
Hk (hook)
Lp (loop)
Ch (chain)
St (stitch)
Sp (space)
Notes:
3 small hearts are crocheted
Then the hearts are joined into the shamrock shape
The eyes, mouth, hanger and felt backing are added last

Heart Shape – Make 3:
Ch 4
Row 1:
2 dc in 4th ch from hk; Turn.
Row 2:
Ch 2, 2 dc in 1st st; ch 1; sl st in next st; ch 1, 2 dc in last st (which is a ch-3 turning chain created by the starting ch-4); ch 2, sl st in side of last st of row;
Continue to sl st to bottom point of heart; ch 1, sl st along other side of heart up to base of 1st st in Row 2. Fasten off.
Stem – Make 1:
Ch 4
Sl st in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Fasten off.
Finishing and Assembly:

With Wrong Sides facing and using yarn needle and yarn tails, sew bottom points of all hearts together
On Wrong Side and with yarn tails and yarn needle sew along orange line in photo above
Using stem yarn tails sew to bottom center of shamrock shape at orange circle (in photo above)
Using photo as a guide glue on eyes and sew on mouth with needle and thread
Tie all yarn tails in double knots on Wrong Side of shamrock and cut off excess
You can glue down these ends to the wrong side if you want
Optional: Fold ribbon length in half and glue to wrong side at top center of shape
Hot glue shamrock onto square of felt
Using sharp scissors trim felt to match shamrock shape
