Celtic Diamond Snowflake

The Celtic Diamond Snowflake is an intricate Celtic snowflake that shimmers in your Christmas lights! I named this snowflake the Celtic Diamond Snowflake because of the 12 diamond-shaped points all around the outer edge. These diamond shapes are simple to create with basic crochet stitches and some fabric stiffener. You can even add some faceted gems to the inside of the diamonds for extra sparkle!

Easy Points Make Diamonds!

Many real snowflake designs incorporate a variety of points and spaces that when put together create mesmerizing patterns. For this Celtic Snowflake you can work easy stitches in a special pattern to make diamond shapes with 3 points grouped together along a crocheted cord. If you look closely, you will see that this snowflake is made up of 3 cords that are woven together using the color-coded Celtic Knot diagram (that is included in the instructions). Even though it is intricate the weaving pattern has a certain rhythm to it that helps you be successful and gets easier as you go.

It was difficult to photograph this snowflake. For some reason it looks so much prettier in person than in any of these photos so I am including a short video of the snowflake hanging from the edge of my mantel. In this video you can see the faceted gems I added to some of the diamonds and you can see the shimmer of the silver metallic thread. I love how it looks in the sunshine, too.

Stitches Used in the Celtic Diamond Snowflake

Would you believe that the only stitches used in this project are the chain, single crochet and slip stitch?! Of course, working with the thin Size 10 cotton crochet thread can be challenging so if this is your first attempt at using this type of yarn, then I recommend you try a different snowflake project first. The Celtic Christmas Bag Charm is a FREE pattern and perfect for those new to working with thread. The bag charm snowflake uses Size 3 cotton crochet thread which is a little thicker than the Size 10. You can always practice the stitches/pattern with a thicker yarn and then gradually go down in yarn size as you get the hang of things. I love how you can create something so beautiful with the most basic stitches. 🙂

Metallic Silver Embroidery Thread – 1 skein

Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 in White

DMC metallic perle thread

Hook: 1.5 mm steel hook

Embroidery Needle with a large eye

Cork board (at least 8” square)

(Foam core poster board, blocking boards or Styrofoam square would also work well)

15-20 straight sewing pins
