Celtic Christmas Keyhole Scarf

The Celtic Christmas Keyhole Scarf is an easy crochet accessory that uses basic stitches and a small amount of yarn. I love wearing Christmas-themed accessories and jewelry at Christmastime but I realized that I mostly had only jewelry. So, I thought it would be good to create this scarf that could be worn to keep me warm outdoors or with a simple blouse indoors. I wanted the Celtic Christmas Tree feature to be front and center! As I was working on this project last Christmas I started creating it with medium weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver) but then when I was at the Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival in Pittsburgh this past summer, I thought making it with the DK weight Superwash Merino wool by Robin’s Promise Yarns would be a beautiful alternative. And since I love both versions, both versions of the scarf are included in the pattern instructions!

Medium Weight or DK Weight?

Medium weight yarn is a very commonly used yarn thickness that is readily available at your local craft store and on-line. It is great for making scarves, hats, mittens and blankets. For this scarf project you need about 250 yds of the yarn to make the scarf base (the length that wraps around your neck) but you only need a very small amount of yarn to make the Celtic Knot Christmas Tree and add the edging. So, this could easily be made with yarn you already have in your stash. I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors listed below and have plenty left over to make more scarves! (Or another Christmas-themed project that you can find here 😉) If you want to make a stunning scarf that feels wonderful around your neck, then I recommend the DK weight yarn in the Superwash Merino variety by Robin’s Promise Yarns. The colors are vibrant and look great together. This yarn is much more expensive than the Red Heart Super Saver yarn but well worth the cost if you are making this for someone special.

Stitches Used in the Celtic Christmas Keyhole Scarf

Most of the stitches used in the Celtic Christmas Keyhole Scarf are basic crochet stitches. To make this scarf you need to know how to do: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. There are a couple of decreases that are explained in detail in the instructions. (These are decreases using single crochet and half double crochet stitches). Plus, there are a few simple techniques that have links to short video tutorials to help you be successful. In addition to the extensive stitch explanations, there are Celtic Knot diagrams to help you weave the knot – one for Right Handers and one for Left Handers – yay! The diagram is actual size and color-coded to make it easier. 🙂

Yarn: I made 2 versions of this project – one using Medium (4) weight yarn (off-white scarf) and one using DK (3) weight yarn (tan scarf)

The Exact Yarn I Used:

Medium Weight: Red Heart Super Saver – 1 skein of each color

Frosty Green (Light Green),  Medium Thyme (Dark Green), Aran (Off-White), Metallic Red (Red)

DK Weight:  Robin’s Promise Two Sparrows DK

4 ply 75% Superwash Merino 25% Nylon – 245 yds/100g

1 skein of each color

Spruce (Light Green), Crim Dell in the Moonlight (Dark Green), Pheasant Tail Feather (Tan), African Firefinch Feather (Red)

Hooks: 3.75mm (F); 5.5mm (I); 6.5mm (K)

Yarn needle

Cork board (at least 12” square)

(Foam core poster board, blocking boards or Styrofoam square would also work well)

15-20 straight sewing pins

 Stitch markers in 3 colors

Optional: Waterproof & Washable Fabric Glue
