Celtic Crochet Cross

The Celtic Crochet Cross is a beautiful decoration that is easy to crochet and put together with a small amount of cotton yarn and thread. I love the look of a Celtic Cross with its signature circle detail and decorative Celtic knots. The cross is a precious symbol of Jesus’ Resurrection that we celebrate each year on Easter. Celtic Crosses – A Symbol of Ireland

Celtic Crosses have become a symbol of Ireland since they were first used in the 8th century. Back then crosses were carved into slabs of stone and then later were created out of large pieces of rock so they could stand upright. Some Celtic Crosses can be anywhere from 8 to 20 feet tall! Some people think that St. Patrick was the first one to create the unique design of these crosses and others think they might have been introduced by St. Columba or St. Declan. St. Patrick probably added the circle to represent eternal life in Christ.

I love how there are many different designs of these crosses with all kinds of Celtic Knots carved into them. Some Celtic Crosses have Biblical scenes on them, too. Now most Celtic Crosses are used as headstones and can be seen in many cemeteries across Ireland and other parts of the British Isles. They are so popular that they have also been made into jewelry, tattoos, clothing and even sports team logos!

Four Celtic Knots

In this Celtic Crochet Cross design there are 4 Celtic Knots. Three of the decorative knots are the same and very easy to weave. They are basic Trinity Knots that are very common in Celtic knotwork. The 4th knot is very similar to the regular Trinity Knot except it has one more section that makes it taller. This knot is also simple to weave and looks great in combination with the other knots.

Stitches Used in the Celtic Crochet Cross

There are a wide variety of basic crochet stitches used to make this project. You’ll need to know these stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet. There is a variation on the double crochet stitch that is easy to do and I explain it in detail in the pattern. A few other techniques are included and some video tutorial links are provided as well to help you be successful.

The Celtic Crochet Cross uses a small amount of cotton Size 3 yarn and Size 3 crochet thread. I used a combination of yarns I found in my stash that looked good together. It helps to pick yarns that contrast well so that the Celtic Knots stand out nicely. You’ll need 2 sizes of crochet hooks – 3.75 mm (F) and 2.75mm (C). Here are the other supplies that go into making this project:

Yarn needle

Cork board (at least 6” square)

(Foam core poster board, blocking boards or Styrofoam square would also work well)

15-20 straight sewing pins

 8 stitch markers

Fabric Stiffener

Aluminum Foil

Rust-proof straight pins (10-15)

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

    I’ve tried to email you twice but im not sure if you’ve seen them.
    I paid for this pattern on etsy last week and received the emails to download it. The problem is that I have no access to my etsy account as it was originally set up on my old phone which just stopped working a few months ago. I can’t get past the 2FA section. Is there any other way I can access the pattern please. I’d love to make it.

  2. That cross is one of the most beautiful I have seen in some time! I have made some for my family it is a bit different and has the rose in the middle. I framed them for my niece’s, nephew’s and my grandchildren for their baptism and confirmations. I would love to try this one. I am now raising grandchildren so time is hard to find:)

  18. These look so Hobby Lobbish…like something you would definitely purchase instead of being able to make at home and customize to suit your tastes in colors. Will be trying this pattern out, I can see having a few of these hung around in each room of my home.
