Crochet Hibiscus Summer Wrap

The Crochet Hibiscus Summer Wrap is a stunning garment that uses basic crochet stitches and cotton yarn. It can be worn as a cover-up on the beach or over a simple black dress for an elegant evening out. The beautiful Hawaiian hibiscus flowers are the highlight of this wrap making for an eye-catching and unique outfit for spring or summer.

I found it easiest to make all the flower motifs first and weave the ends in before I started to join them all – my little dachshund likes this idea, too. 😉

Special Hawaiian-themed Design for Crochet Today

Over 10 years ago I created this design for a crochet magazine called, Crochet Today. (Unfortunately, it is no longer in print but there is a way to download a digital copy of the issue – More about this below! 😁) I had visited Hawaii several times over the years and thought the hibiscus flower would make the perfect focal point for this wrap since you can see them everywhere you go on the island. I love how this wrap turned out. The large hibiscus motifs are easy to make and the shape of this wrap is very flattering on a variety of body types.

Here I am working on my wrap on the long plane ride to Hawaii! I was determined to finish it in time to wear it on our trip.

Detailed Step-by-Step Video Tutorial for the Crochet Hibiscus Summer Wrap

As you may know, I traveled to Maui, Hawaii again this year with my family and thought it was the perfect time to make this wrap to wear there! (The first wrap I crocheted was sent into the publisher and I never saw it again. 😭) So, I dug out my Crochet Today Jul/Aug 2013 issue and started to make this project. But while I was working on it I realized it would be helpful to make a video tutorial so you can make one, too! I spent hours creating this video taking you through all of the steps from supplies, to crocheting each flower motif, to how to join them all together (as-you-go technique), to adding the lacy stitches on the top and bottom, to adding a few updates and finishing touches. Click here to watch this video or on the image below!

Stitches Used in This Wrap

This wrap is an intermediate crochet project because of how the flower motifs are joined together and how the lacy stitches are added above and below them. The stitches used are all basic stitches but the project requires some crochet experience so I do not recommend it for beginners. These are the stitches that are included in the pattern: chain, single crochet, slip stitch, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet and double treble crochet. Of course, ALL of the stitches and steps are shown clearly in my tutorial video.

Supplies for the Crochet Hibiscus Summer Wrap:

Supplies used in this project - cotton yarn (yellow, red, ecru) and crochet hooks, markers and needle

I originally thought I would make the stamens and center petals with a bright yellow yarn but I didn’t like the way it looked so I used a light pink instead. What do you think? Should I have used a different color?

  1. Hi again Jennifer. Who won the free Pattern? I was at Walmart this week and They had their summer Tervis tumblers/cups on sale for $13. I snagged a beautiful Hibiscus print one. It instantly made me think of you, Hawaii and your shawl. I’ll be making one, or more, soon. Love ya.

    1. Awww, that is so sweet! The winner will be announced in this week’s newsletter. Hope you enjoy using your new cup! 🙂

  2. This is such a unique twist on Irish crochet. I have studied and tried Irish lace which connects motifs into a garment. You found a great way to marry Irish lace technique with the Hawaiian theme in the hibiscus flower. I can envision similar patterns that could be made to embrace other flowers as well. The garment gives a nice sense of flair to a plain dress which shows it off well.

  3. cant wait to make the wrap! I lived in Kona for 6 months as a traveling Clinical Laboratory Scientist and loved the area but hated the prices of everything!

Thank you for the information on the Internet Archives as well. That will come in handy.

    1. Yes, everything in Hawaii is very expensive! It’s a special place, though. Thank you for your comment. 🙂

  4. This is an amazing wrap, especially for summer when one doesn’t want a heavy wrap but something to cover the shoulders while in the air conditioning. Thank you for your beautiful patterns.

  5. We have just moved into spring here in “Downunder” and there will soon be real hibiscus flowering in some gardens. Your flowers are a real reminder of this.

  6. That poncho would be suitable for all ages. I can picture myself making one for me and one for my granddaughter!

  7. I would also like to thank you for sharing the pattern and video tutorial for the hibiscus wrap. It is really unique and beautiful, as well as being practical. I love the colors you used and love some of the other color ideas of your followers. I am going to save this for a future project perhaps over the winter to have ready for next summer. Thank you again and I love your Celtic heart designs which I also plan on making in the not too distant future.

  10. Thanks for a beautiful pattern. My one hibiscus plant is just starting to bloom, very early in SA only starting spring now. Adore hibiscus flowers, and this pattern is sooooo perfect just now. Still grieving my father, and my red hibiscus was one he planted for me. His birthday is tomorrow, so I will start this project for him and me.

  13. Hi Jennifer. Your wrap is so pretty. I have never crocheted while traveling. I usually drive. I would love to take a long train trip and crochet. I crochet at doctors’ appointments. I love the pink stamens. You get prettier every day. TY for the link to the play as well. I’m off to watch both videos. I tried to download the magazine article but couldn’t. I’ll get my son to show me what I’m doing wrong. Love ya.

  14. Tis a beautiful wrap with hibiscus flowers. First thing I thought of was a great cover up for one of my sundresses that I have and how I like the colors that you used. I can see myself crocheting this pattern and wearing it!

  15. I LOVE this pattern! I live in Corpus Christi TX and we have several Hibiscus plants around the outside of our house. I’m thinking of making one for my daughter who loves bees. I would make it in black with yellow flowers and a white stamen. For my sister I would use light lavender with deep purple flowers and a bright pink stamen. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making all your beautiful pieces. I always look forward to your email with the latest post.

    1. Thank you! So lovely that you have hibiscus plants around your house. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your color and gifting ideas. I appreciate your support and encouragement. ❤

  16. This looks so pretty especially thinking of the
little black dress and would you be able to use the ring of flowers as a centre piece with vase or bowl in the middle? (seeing laying flat in blog pics)

    1. Yes! Great idea! You can definitely make a circle of the flower motifs. You may need to add some chains or taller stitches to help it lay flat but totally possible. 🙂

  17. Jennifer! Wow! What a gorgeous wrap! I want to crochet one with the same colors you used in your photo. I love the bright pink hibiscus flowers! I plan to make one for my sister-in-law who loves to go to the beach! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent in this pattern!

    1. You are welcome and thank you! So glad to hear you love this wrap. Please let me know if you have any questions – I am happy to help. 🙂

  18. So cute, if I can figure out way to make it somewhat bigger, I may need to try this out when I’ve finished other more urgent stuff.

  19. This is adorable. My husband and I travel to Hawaii as often as possible and this will be one of my next makes! Thank you!!!

    1. Thank you! That’s great that you travel to Hawaii often – there’s nothing like Hawaii. 🙂 Hope you enjoy making and wearing this wrap – please contact me if you have any questions while making it. I am happy to help.

  20. That is so pretty! I wish I had somewhere tropical to wear it to!
For a number of years, I would buy my Momma hibiscus plants at the beginning of the summer and they were that beautiful fuchsia/scarlet color of the ones that you made for your wrap. They didn’t survive the combination of my extra back thumb and our Tennessee winters, but they were so lovely while they lasted.

    Changing directions:
Imagine for a moment that each of the flowers were a deep red/maroon and you put white chevron beads on the petals facing inward like shiny teeth. The rest of the wrap could be in black or a variegated black and gray like a stormy sky. You would have made your Goth Girl a Demogorgon Halloween wrap. I wish I had the time to make one like that!

Thank you so much for sharing your patterns with us!

    1. You are welcome! Thank you for sharing about your flowers and your idea – very creative! I’m not sure when I will return to a tropical island but I still plan on wearing my wrap during summers in New England! 😉

  21. Thank you for making this pattern available WITH a Tutorial -I’m a visual learner! We went to Kauai this summer and this will be a great “souvenir” to remember a beautiful place. Will look at some of our photos to match a color scheme unique to the island. And there’s other possibilities to incorporate the hibiscus! for gifts!

    1. You are welcome! I hope you find the video helpful. Kauai is beautiful – my family and I went for a couple days one summer on the way to Maui. I hope you enjoy picking out colors. Great idea to use the flower motif for other things, too! Please share photos when you can – would love to see your project. 🙂

  22. OMGOSH this is BEAUTIFUL! I can’t wait to make this. I’m going to make it in superwash Marino now I just have to decide on the colors for the flowers.
Thank you for sharing this pattern.
