Easy Crochet Leaf

The Easy Crochet Leaf is fun and quick to make! This project uses basic crochet stitches and a small amount of velvet yarn. I love the colors of fall and thought this pretty orange yarn was perfect for this leaf. Plus, once you add some safety eyes and a little mouth, the leaf becomes even cuter!

Fall Decorations or a Quick Gift

I decided to add a ribbon hanger to the top of the leaf so it can be hung anywhere as a fall decoration. Another idea is that you could make a bunch of the Easy Crochet Leaf projects in a variety of colors and combine them into a garland to hang in your home. Or you could add a simple message and leave somewhere in your community for someone to find! It is sure to brighten their day and make them smile. 🙂

Stitches Used in the Easy Crochet Leaf

To make the Easy Crochet Leaf you’ll need to know these stitches: chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and slip stitch. These are all basic crochet stitches that even a beginner can do! To help the finishing of this project go even quicker, I decided to glue felt to the back after I attached the eyes, mouth and hanging ribbon. But if you didn’t want to add felt, you could simply make 2 leaves and sew them together with Wrong Sides facing. Small amount of velvet yarn

(I used Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth in “Pumpkin” and other colors)

5 mm (H) crochet hook by Clover

Yarn needle

6-8 mm safety eyes (2)

Small amount of black Size 3 cotton crochet thread and embroidery needle

Small amount of dark brown felt (5” x 5” square)

Fabric glue or hot glue gun (and glue sticks)

Optional: Small length of matching ribbon, cardstock for kindness message

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Notes:

Project is first worked in the round along both sides of the starting chain

Then sides are added along with the facial details and felt backing/stem

Instructions for the Easy Crochet Leaf by Jennifer Ryan:

(All stitches and abbreviations are defined above)

Ch 9

Round 1: 

Hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each of next 3 chs; sc in each of next 2 chs; sl st in last ch, ch 1;

Now working on other side of ch, sl st in 1^st ch, sc in each of the next 2 chs, hdc in each of the next 5 chs.

Round 2 (First Side Section):

Ch 1, sl st along bottom of leaf (2-3 times); sl st in 1^st st (of Round 1); * ch 1, dc in same st, dc in next st, ch 1; sl st in top side of dc just made and in bottom side of same dc, sl st in next st. Fasten off. *

Other Side Section:

Turn leaf over so Wrong Side facing; sl st in 1^st st on bottom of leaf (on this other side);  Repeat * to * of First Side Section

Note: Because the Velvet yarn has a lot of texture, you won’t be able to tell that one side section has the front of the stitches showing and the other side section has the back of the stitches showing – doing it this way helps the leaf look its best 😊

Finishing and Assembly:

Weave in all ends on Wrong Side of Leaf

For face details placement use photo as a guide

Add safety eyes

Using black thread and needle add mouth

Using finished leaf shape as a template cut out felt slightly smaller but adding a stem length (see photo)

Glue felt to back of leaf

Optional Hanger: Fold ribbon in half and glue to back of leaf

Optional: Write out a short message onto cardstock paper and pin (or glue) to back of leaf – fold message in half so hidden from front view

Your Easy Crochet Leaf is complete! Which colors did you choose to make it in? I think velvet yarn would work best because of the texture and volume per stitch but you could make this project with medium weight acrylic yarn. I love seeing these cute little leaves around my house amongst my fall decorations – they make me smile!
