Celtic Christmas Tree Trio
The Celtic Christmas Tree Trio project is perfect for a home decoration but it can also be used as a unique motif to be appliqued onto a variety of finished projects, such as: a stocking, gift bag, tree skirt, blanket, pillow, sweater or hat. I decided to create these 3 sizes of a Celtic Christmas Tree after making the Celtic Christmas Keyhole Scarf (that you can see here). I loved how the Celtic Knot tree looked and wanted to create a decoration for my home with it. And like with the Keyhole Scarf, I made 2 versions: one in medium weight acrylic yarn and one in DK weight cotton yarn!

Celtic Christmas Trees on a Stick!
Since these Celtic Christmas Trees are decorations I don’t plan on washing them so I used hot glue to affix all of the crossings in the Celtic Knots and put all the other pieces together. This way it is super quick and much easier than trying to sew everything! (If you want to be able to wash your trees, consider using washable fabric glue. I found this kind on Amazon and it works well!) It’s easy to make the trees stand up using a basic kitchen supply and some wood circle slices I found at my local craft store. You can also glue or sew a Celtic Christmas Tree to a store-bought item or a finished crochet project. What do you plan to use these tree motifs for?
Christmas Tree Applique Motifs
The Celtic Christmas Tree Trio can be used as an applique on a variety of crocheted or store-bought items! I made a few extra trees and had fun experimenting with how they looked on a bunch of objects I found at my local Hobby Lobby. In the photo below you can see how the tree looks on a white stocking, an off-white pillow and a dark pink canvas tote bag. I found some dark red paper gift bags at my local dollar store and decided to hot glue one of the trees to one – I love how it looks! (photo above) And it was so easy to make. Which motif idea do you like the best or do you have another one in mind?
Stitches Used in the Celtic Christmas Tree Trio
Most of the stitches used in the Celtic Christmas Tree Trio are basic crochet stitches. To make these trees you need to know how to do: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. There are a couple of decreases that are explained in detail in the instructions. (These are decreases using single crochet and slip stitches). Plus, there are a few simple techniques that have links to short video tutorials to help you be successful. In addition to the extensive stitch explanations, there are Celtic Knot diagrams to help you weave the knots – ALL tree sizes come in one for Right Handers and one for Left Handers – yay! The diagrams are actual size and color-coded to make it easier.

(The crochet stitches are simple but weaving the medium and small trees is more challenging than weaving the large tree especially if you use medium weight yarn)

Large: 9” tall x 4 ½” wide (DK = 7 ½” tall x 4” wide)
Medium: 6 ½” tall x 3” wide (DK = 5 ½” tall x 3” wide)
Small: 5 ½” tall x 2 ¾” wide (DK = 4 ¾” tall x 2 ½” wide)
All have about 1 ½”-2” stand length

2 skeins of yarn – Here’s what I used:
Medium Weight: Red Heart Super Saver – 1 skein of each color
Frosty Green (Light Green), Medium Thyme (Dark Green)
DK Weight: Sinfonia by Omega
Dark Green (#880) and Light Green (#829) – 1 skein of each color
3.75mm (F) hook
Cork board (at least 12” square)
(Foam core poster board, blocking boards or Styrofoam square would also work well)
Optional: Waterproof & Washable Fabric Glue
2 squares of coordinating felt
3 wooden circles (about 2” across)
Drill and 3/16” drill bit
