Crochet Flower Keychain

The Crochet Flower Keychain is a quick and pretty project that looks great added to your handbag, totebag or keychain! Cutsie keychains are very popular right now and come in every possible shape, size, color and character. Plus, you can use this same pattern to create a hair barrette instead – these are popular now, too. (See the white flower in the photo below)

I decided to take one of my previous patterns (The Crochet Flower Scrubbie and the Crochet Flower Bracelet – click on names to see those patterns) and some thicker cotton yarn to create an eye-catching bangle keychain with just a few changes and supplies. I used a very simple technique to create this 3D-petal-look so you can finish your flower in no time!

Stitches Used in the Crochet Flower Keychain

To make the Crochet Flower Keychain you will need to know these basic crochet stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. I use the adjustable ring technique for the very beginning of the flower but I give you an easier alternative as well. Plus, there is a link to a short video tutorial to help with that technique that you can watch here.

Size 3 cotton yarn

(I used LionBrand’s 24/7 cotton in these colors: Magenta (dark pink); Pink Rose (101A); White; Grass (green); Yellow – this one was “DK” weight so thinner – I used a 2.75 hook and my flower came out smaller – about 2″ across)

The label on this yarn says it is medium weight but to me I think of it more like Size 3 yarn. You could also use Sinfonia by Omega or Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton)

3.75mm crochet hook

Stitch marker

Jumbo tapestry needle

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Clasp and/or keyring

Small amount of coordinating felt

Optional supply for hair barrette variation: Hair clip base and matching sewing thread and needle

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Adjustable Ring-Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through loop with hook; work stitches into loop and then pull yarn tail to tighten and close up center hole

Back Loop Only = insert hook through back loop of each stitch

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

Back bar of the chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Notes:

Flower is worked in the round in a spiral

Use a stitch marker to mark the 1st stitch of each round

3D petals are added in the center of the flower in the unused front loops of stitches

Instructions for the Crochet Flower Keychain by Jennifer Ryan:

Special stitches are printed in bold and italicized text and defined above

Round 1:

Work 6 sc in an adjustable ring

(Alternative to adjustable ring: Ch 2, work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk)

This is Round 2 completed with a stitch marker in the 1st st of the round

Round 2: 

Working in the back loop only, work 2 sc in each st around. Do not join.(12 sc)

Round 3:

Continue working in the back loop only, (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around. Do not join. (18 sc)

Round 4: 

Now working in both loops, (sl st in next st, ch 3, sk next st) around ending with sl st in 1^st sl st of round. (9 ch-3 sps)

This is Round 5 completed with white arrows showing where you will work the sl sts in Round 6

Round 5: 

(Sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl st) in each ch-3 sp around. (9 petals)

This is Round 6 completed with a different color so easier to see the stitches

Round 6: 

Ch 1, (sl st in next st from Round 4 that is in center of next ch-3 sp, ch 3) around ending with sl st to 1^st sl st. (9 ch-3 sps)

Round 7: 

(Sl st, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sl st) in each ch-3 sp around; sl st in 1^st sl st of round. Fasten off. (9 petals)

The white arrow shows where you will start the “Last Round of Petals” – in the first unused front loop (this photo was taken while working on Round 7)

This photos shows the pattern stitches highlighted in blue below completed (with dark pink yarn) and then the next section (highlighted in yellow) are started with white yarn

Last Round of Petals:

Starting in unused front loop of very 1^st st (of Round 1 – this will be in the center of flower), join with sl st; (2 hdc, sl st) in same st; [sk next st; (sl st, 2 hdc, sl st) in next st] 2 times;

[sk next st; (sl st, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1, sl st) in next st] 6 times; sl st in 1^st sl st of 6^th petal from hook. Fasten off.

Short Hanging Loop:

(This loop size is perfect for attaching your flower to a keyring or lobster clasp)

Ch 17

Working in the back bar of the chain, sl st in 2nd ch and in each ch across. Fasten off.

Long Hanging Loop:

(This loop size is good for attaching your flower to a bag without using a keyring or clasp – simply wrap hanging loop around the bag handle and then pass flower through hanging loop to secure onto bag as shown with the yellow flower)

Ch 40

Work as for short hanging loop

Leaf – Make 2:

(Approximately 1 3/4″ long x 1″ wide)

You will be working along both sides of the chain to create this leaf shape

With green yarn ch 9

Sl st in 2nd ch from hk, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next ch; ch 1;

Now working along other side of ch, sl st in 1st ch, sc in next ch, hdc in ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next ch, sl st in turning chain. Do not fasten off.

Making sure working yarn is on back side of leaf, * insert hk into next gap along center line, YO behind leaf, pull yarn through center of leaf and through loop on hk*; Repeat from * to * across leaf; ch 1 at end of leaf; Cut yarn and pull through lp on hk

Weave in all ends on Wrong Side of leaf

Finishing and Assembly:

Using needle thread all yarn tails to back side of flower

Tie yarn tails in double-knots and trim to about 1/2″ in length (since we are covering these tails with felt, you do not need to weave them in – yay! 🙂)

Thread short hanging loop through clasp or ring and sew ends together to create a loop

For long hanging loop, join ends together and glue to back of flower

With hot glue gun attach leaves and hanging loop to back of flower using photo as a guide

Hot glue on matching felt and trim away excess
