Celtic Heart Drawstring Bag
The Celtic Heart Drawstring Bag is an eye-catching project that features 12 Celtic Knot Hearts made into square motifs that are joined together into a practical tote. I started working on this design over a year ago but ran out of time to finish it by Valentine’s Day so I was determined to complete it this year. 🙂 I experimented with several different Celtic heart designs and spent a lot of time figuring out how to build the stitches around the heart to create the square shape. It was definitely a challenge to get it worked out but I love the results!

12 Celtic Heart Motifs
I really wanted to create motifs that were solid for the Celtic Heart and for the stitches surrounding it. This made it more challenging but I like that it can be used without a lining. The Celtic Heart is the same design that I have used in other projects you can find here on the blog: The Celtic Knot Heart, The Celtic Heart Garland and the Celtic Heart Square. It is easy to weave and has a great look.
I designed this bag to be able to stand on its own but it doesn’t have to have a drawstring closure on top – you can have it be open like a rectangular tote bag or simply add a snap or button closure to the top center. And I show you how to reinforce the bottom oval so you have a sturdy base to keep all of your belongings safe.
Stitches Used in the Celtic Heart Drawstring Bag
A wide variety of stitches are used in the Celtic Heart Drawstring Bag. You will need to know how to do all of the basics: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet. There are a few techniques that are used and I provide detailed explanations of them in the instructions along with some video tutorial links. Another stitch included in this project is an “extended double crochet” stitch. Even though it sounds complicated it is actually pretty simple to do. I like using these types of stitches when a stitch needs to have just a little more height.

Supplies Needed for the Celtic Heart Drawstring Bag

It is best to crochet a bag with cotton yarn because it is strong and will not stretch out too much. I decided to use one of my favorite cotton yarns, Sinfonia, by Omega. It is a Size 3 yarn (DK weight) and comes in several beautiful colors! For this project I used a light blue (816) and a light grey (808). I created the hearts with 2 shades of red (823 & 824) and I love how the subtle difference between the shades highlights the pattern of the Celtic Heart but also adds depth to the design. I crocheted the whole bag with a size 3.75mm (F) Clover hook. This hook works very well with this yarn.
