Celtic Butterfly Motif

The Celtic Butterfly Motif is a quick and beautiful pattern that can be combined with all sorts of projects as an applique! When I was making the Celtic Butterfly Mandala project and pattern I really enjoyed making the Celtic Knot butterfly motif and thought it would look good on other projects. So, I put together this pattern for those who might love butterflies but didn’t want to make the mandala project.

Plus, these instructions include diagrams for 3 sizes of the butterfly and a separate file with fewer photos in the instructions to save you on printer ink! 🙂

Crochet Applique

What is “crochet applique”? Crochet Applique is the art and technique of making crocheted motifs (shapes and forms) that are then attached to other completed projects or store-bought products. I LOVE doing this with my crochet projects! 💗 It is a great way to personalize something or make it a one-of-a-kind item. You can sew your appliques on with sewing thread or you can glue them on with fabric glue. If it doesn’t need to be washed, you can even hot glue your motifs to other things! I tried some fabric glue out for the first time which can be washed (for the zipper pouch at the top of this post with the orange butterfly) and it worked very well. You can see the projects I attached my butterflies to in this post.

Stitches Used in the Celtic Butterfly Motif

To make the Celtic Butterfly Motif you will need to know ALL the basic crochet stitches, such as: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet. You’ll also need to know the double treble crochet stitch which is very similar to the treble crochet – just a little bit taller. There are a few other stitches and techniques included that are explained in detail inside the instructions. Several of these techniques also have a video tutorial link that you can access while on your laptop with a clickable link or via a QR code with your phone. (The QR codes are great when you like to work from a paper printout of the pattern! While reading from paper you can scan the tutorial codes with your phone and watch the video tutorial very easily.) 🙂
