Celtic Knot Crochet Bag

The Celtic Knot Crochet Bag is a fun and unique project that uses basic crochet stitches and cotton yarn. Crochet bags made out of motifs are very popular right now and I thought it would be fun to use this construction that features a square Celtic Knot motif front and center. And since we have about one month until St. Patrick’s Day, I thought everyone would like having this project as a Crochet-a-long (CAL). Each week we will work on one part of the pattern and gradually finish it by mid-March! 🍀

Crochet-a-Long and How It Works

What is a Crochet-a-long? A Crochet-a-long or CAL is a designated amount of time that crocheters work on a project at the same time. This can be done in a variety of ways usually with the help of the internet. 🙂 For our CAL of the Celtic Knot Crochet Bag we will be working on parts of the pattern each week. I will post each part of the pattern on Fridays over the next month right here on this page. If you receive my weekly newsletter on Fridays, you will get the reminders and updates that way. Anyone is welcome to participate in this CAL. If you can join us on Feb. 14, 2025, that would be great! You’ll want to gather the supplies so you are ready to start crocheting. For Week 1 you only need the yarn, 3.75 mm (F) hook and the stitch markers. I will be giving out some prizes as we go and giving some special discount coupons for my Etsy Shop. I hope to share some pictures of your progress as we go, too! Supplies with the pink highlight are needed for Week 1 (all supplies are explained in the first video tutorial of the CAL as well)

Size 3 cotton yarn (DK weight) in 3 colors

(I used 2 skeins of the green and 1 skein of each of the dark and light pinks)

(I am using LionBrand 24/7 cotton (in Grass and Magenta) and Sinfonia by Omega (Carnation Pink 864)- Another option: you could use I Love This Cotton by Yarn Bee at Hobby Lobby)

 3.75mm (F) crochet hook

Stitch markers (at least 6 but around 20 would be great – You could also use safety pins, twist ties or short pieces of yarn)

5.5mm (I) crochet hook

Yarn needle

Printout of Celtic Knot Diagram (you may want to print out 2 copies so you can have one next to your project to refer to) – Click here for the Right Handers Diagram

Corkboard (at least 8″ x 8″)

15-20 straight sewing pins

Notes:

First 8 cords are crocheted

Then these cords are woven into 2 Celtic Knot squares

Next stitches are added around the Celtic Knots to complete the square shape

Then 3 large solid hexagons and one thick strap are crocheted

Lastly all 5 pieces are joined together along with the strap

Special Stitches and Abbreviations for the Celtic Knot Crochet Bag:

Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Back Loop Only = Insert hk only into the back lp at the top of the stitch

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

Join with sc (join with single crochet) = With slip knot on hook, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Week 1 – Feb. 14th:

Cord 1 – Make 4:

Approximately 11 ½” long x ½” wide – no edging

Approximately 11 ½” long x ¾” wide with edging

You will be marking 2 sts with stitch markers to help you with the edging round – these instructions are marked with blue highlighter – by skipping these stitches you help make the rounded parts neater and more round

With Dark pink (Magenta) ch 54

Working in the back bar of the chain, hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each of next 19 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Mark ch at base of sts with stitch marker;

hdc in each of next 25 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Mark ch at base of sts with stitch marker;

hdc in each of next 5 chs. Fasten off with long tail for assembly.

Cord 1 – Edging:

With Light Pink and working in back loop only, join with sl st in 1^st st; sl st in each st across; ch 1, sl st along short end of cord, ch 1; continuing to work in back loop only, sl st in each st across making sure to skip the sts marked by the stitch markers. Fasten off.

Add a stitch marker to the end of each of the completed Cord 1’s so you remember for the weaving step

Cord 2 – Make 4:

Approximately 11” long x ½” wide – no edging

Approximately 11” long x ¾” wide with edging

With Dark Pink (Magenta) ch 52

Working in the back bar of the chain, hdc in 3^rd ch and in each of the next 4 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Mark ch at base of sts with stitch marker;

Hdc in each of the next 15 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Mark ch at base of sts with stitch marker;

Hdc in each of the next 8 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Mark ch at base of sts with stitch marker;

Cord 2 – Edging:

Work the same as for Cord 1 – you will skip the 4 sts that are marked with stitch markers

Weaving the Celtic Knot – Week 2 – Feb. 21st:

Print out the Celtic Knot Diagram in color – There are 2 diagrams – one for Right Handers and one for Left Handers. Make sure to use the correct one! (You can find the diagrams in the supply list above)

You may want to print out an extra diagram to place on the side – it helps to have it there to refer to while you weave the knot and the diagram gets full with the cords

Pin diagram to corkboard

I made each cord a different color to match the colors of the paths in this knot diagram – this helps you see how the cords become the square knot but once you put all the cords into the same color, it’s harder to see how it’s woven 🙂

Place the beginning of Cord 1 on the diagram at the black asterisk on the pink path

Lay cord along pink path in the direction of the black arrow

Pin cord in place as you go keeping the cord on top of the pink path

Using yarn needle and yarn tails sew cord ends together

Step-by-Step Video Tutorial for Week 2:

I created this video tutorial for you to help you with weaving the Celtic Knot and adding the edging – If you’ve never made one of my Celtic Knot patterns before, then I highly recommend watching the video! You’ll get step-by-step help along with several tips to help you be successful! 🙂

Weaving both of Cord 2:

Place the beginning of the other Cord 1 on the diagram at the black square on the blue path

Lay cord along blue path in the direction of the black arrow

Using yarn needle and yarn tails sew cord ends together

Place the beginning of Cord 2 on the diagram at the black circle on the green path

Lay cord along green path in the direction of the black arrow

Make sure to correctly pass either over or under according to the diagram

You may want to thread the yarn tails onto the yarn needle to help you pass over and under the other cords when weaving the rest of the cords

Place the beginning of the other Cord 2 on the diagram at the black triangle on the white path

Lay cord along white path in the direction of the black arrow

This cord will pass over and under alternately throughout because it is the last cord of the knot

Pin cord ends of both Cord 2’s across and remove all other pins so you can remove the knot from the board

Turn over so Wrong Side facing; Using yarn tails and yarn needle sew cord ends together

Tie yarn tails in a double knot and weave in on Wrong Side making sure they do not show on the Right Side of knot

Knot Edging for the Celtic Knot Crochet Bag:

Round 1:

You will refer to the numbers and letters on the Celtic Knot Diagram for this first round of edging

You will be working in the loop behind the sl st edging of all the cords (shown by the white arrows in the photo above)

(If you would like to make this round even more secure, you can work in 2 loops on the back of the cords below the sl st edging)

Mark each ch-1 sp with a stitch marker to help you find it for the next round

With Green (Grass), join with hdc in 3 sts away from where cords meet at “1” (see Diagram); hdc in each of the next 2 sts; * ■ dc at next cord cross (1); sc in each of next 4 sts (on Section A); dc at next cord cross (2); sc in each of next 4 sts (on Section B); dc at next cord cross (3); hdc in each of next 3 sts (on Section C); (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st – Corner; ■ hdc in each of next 3 sts *;

(You will be repeating the same stitches that you completed for the first side of the square along all other sides)

Repeat from * to * 2 more times; Repeat ■ to ■ 1 time; join with sl st to 1^st st of round. (19 sts on each side with ch-1 sp at each corner)

Round 2:

Ch 3, dc in next 7 sts;

2 dc in next st;

Dc in next 9 sts;

2 dc in next ch-1 sp (corner);

*dc in next 9 sts;

2 dc in next st;

Dc in next 9 sts;

2 dc in next ch-1 sp (corner);

Repeat * to * 2 more times;

Dc in next st;

Join with sl st to starting ch-3. Fasten off.

Week 3 – Feb. 28th:

Hexagon – Make 3:

You will mark all tr of each round with a stitch marker – you will need 6 stitch markers

Round 1:

With smaller hook (3.75mm/F) and in an adjustable ring work (ch 3, 12 dc); sl st to 1^st dc (skipping starting ch-3).

(Alternative to adjustable ring: Ch 4, work 12 dc in 4^th ch from hk; join with sl st to 1^st dc; With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew up opening and knot yarn tail to keep snug)

Stitch-by-Stitch Video Tutorial for Week 3 of our CAL!

In this video I show you how to crochet the hexagons for our Celtic Knot Crochet Bag using stitch markers – this makes it quick and easy! Plus, I show you how to make the strap – a technique I like to use in many of my crochet projects.

Here is Round 2 completed:

Round 2:

Ch 2, 2 dc in same st;

[(dc, tr, dc) in next st;

Mark tr with a stitch marker;

2 dc in next st] around;

(dc, tr, dc) in last st;

Mark tr with a stitch marker;

Join with sl st to 1^st dc of round (skipping the starting ch-2). (24 dc and 6 tr – 4 dc along each side)

Round 3:

Ch 2, dc in same st;

[Dc in each st across up to next stitch marker;

(dc, tr, dc) in st marked with stitch marker;

Mark tr with a stitch marker;]

Repeat [  ] around;

Dc in each st across to 1^st dc of round; join with sl st to 1^st dc. (36 dc and 6 tr – 6 dc along each side)

Rounds 4-10:

Repeat Round 3; Fasten off.

Each round you will add 2 dcs along each side (in between the trs)

The total stitches for each round will increase by 12

You will have only 6 trs each round

Ex. Round 4:  54 total stitches (48 dc & 6 tr); 8 dc along each side

Will end with 20 dc in between the trs for each side – see list below

Totals for Each Round:

Round 1: 12 dc

Round 2: 30 sts – 24 dc and 6 tr (4 dc along each side)

Round 3: 42 sts – 36 dc and 6 tr (6 dc along each side)

Round 4: 54 sts – 48 dc and 6 tr (8 dc along each side)

Round 5: 66 sts – 60 dc and 6 tr (10 dc along each side)

Round 6: 78 sts – 72 dc and 6 tr (12 dc along each side)

Round 7: 90 sts – 84 dc and 6 tr (14 dc along each side)

Round 8: 102 sts – 96 dc and 6 tr (16 dc along each side)

Round 9: 114 sts – 108 dc and 6 tr (18 dc along each side)

Round 10: 126 sts – 120 dc and 6 tr (20 dc along each side)

Strap:

Remember, you can watch the Week 3 video tutorial here to help with making the hexagons and strap!

With larger hook (5.5 mm/I) and double-strand of Green yarn ch a length that equals approximately 28”

Hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each ch across; Ch 1, sl st along side of last hdc made; ch 2;

Now work hdc in unused ch loops along bottom edge of row completed. Fasten off with long tail for assembly.

We’ve made it to the last step of our Celtic Knot Crochet Bag Crochet-a-long – YAY!

Make sure all trs are marked with stitch markers so it is easier to line up each side before joining

Fold all hexagons in half so 3 equal sides are in each half

With folded sides facing toward outer edge of bag, pin along edges shown in first photo with pink lines matching up stitches marked with stitch markers

You may want to mark the top center of the bottom hexagon with a stitch marker so you can remember which piece goes on the bottom (see orange circle in photo below)

With Wrong Sides facing sc through both layers along the same lines working from tr to tr across each side

Step-by-Step Video Tutorial for Joining All the Pieces Together:

Even though the construction of this bag looks very simple, I found that when you go to put it all together you can get a little “turned around” with the pieces so I came up with a way to keep things in order and make it easier to join everything – Click on the image below to watch the video tutorial for all those tips!

Make sure space between 2 dcs at each corner of both squares are marked with stitch markers

In same manner as above, pin square sides to hexagon sides matching up stitches marked with stitch markers with 1^st and last dc of each side of the square

Sc along 3 sides of square for center and along one side of each hexagon shown by blue lines in second photo above

Repeat with second square for the back side of the bag

With smaller hook (3.75mm/F) join with sc at top side of bag; sc in each st around top edge of bag; join with sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off.

With yarn needle and yarn tails sew on strap at sides making sure about 2” of each end of strap are sewn down inside – yellow line in photo below (arrows pointing to where strap goes in photo above)
