Crochet Shamrock Square Pattern

Today I have another FREE Irish-inspired crochet pattern for you! This Crochet Shamrock Square Pattern is crocheted with Red Heart Soft yarn in some lovely colors – Guacamole, Dark Leaf, Tangerine and Off-White. This yarn has such a pretty sheen and so easily glides on your hook that you’ll have this square finished in no time! And lately I am loving the combination of greens, oranges and whites 🙂

Crochet Square – how to use it?

Crochet square patterns are very popular because you can do so many things with them. I could see this shamrock square being turned into a small accent pillow or a decoration on a reusable shopping bag. This would also make a pretty center to a crochet blanket of motifs or it would look neat to have 5 of them in a blanket – each at a corner plus one in the center! What do you think you would use this square for?

Little Lacy Heart becomes a Pretty Lacy Shamrock

If you visited my blog over the last month or so you would have noticed several patterns featuring crocheted hearts. Well, as I was brainstorming about projects to make in honor of St. Patrick’s Day I remembered that all shamrocks are 3 hearts put together at their bottom points. So . . . . I decided to use the “Little Lacy Heart” (a FREE pattern you can find on this blog here – it even comes with a step-by-step video tutorial!) with this medium weight yarn to create the pretty shamrock at the ‘heart’ 😉 and center of this crochet square pattern. I also put together a quick little lacy shamrock using Size 10 metallic crochet thread, added some fabric stiffener and attached it to a chain to create a quick necklace (as shown above).

Skill Level: Intermediate

I used only basic stitches for the crochet shamrock square pattern but the Little Lacy Heart uses an adjustable ring and an extended stitch. And to build this square you will need to first work back and forth in rows and then start working in the round. Because of these things I am rating this project “Intermediate” but feel free to use pieces of the pattern that work for you! You could just make the shamrock to applique on another square or crochet project or you could only make up to Round 1 of the square and not add the additional rounds. You pick!

Yarn: Red Heart Soft yarn in: Guacamole (Light Green), Dark Leaf (Dark Green), Off White and Tangerine (Orange)

(This is acrylic medium weight yarn that has about 256 yards per skein – 1 skein of each color is plenty to create one square)

H (5mm) crochet hook

Yarn needle

10 straight sewing pins

8 stitch markers

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) twice

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hk into st, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Join with dc (join with double crochet) = With slip knot on hk, YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) twice

4-dcPOP (4-double crochet Popcorn) = Work 4 dc in sp indicated; Then remove hook from working loop and insert hook from front to back through top of 1st dc; Pull working loop through the top of 1st dc to close popcorn

Join with hdc (join with half double crochet) = With slip knot on hk, YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

Adjustable Ring= Form a loop with yarn around hand; Draw working yarn through ring to create a working loop; ch 1 to lock ring in place

Beg. Popcorn (Beginning Popcorn)= (Work ch 3, 4 dc) in sp indicated; Then remove hook from working loop and insert hook from front to back through top of ch-3; Pull working loop through the top of ch-3 to close popcorn

Popcorn = Work 5 dc in sp indicated; Then remove hook from working loop and insert hook from front to back through top of 1st dc; Pull working loop through the top of 1st dc to close popcorn

Extdc (Extended Double Crochet)= YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through only one lp on hk; (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) twice

Ch = chain; Sp = space; Hk = hook; Lp = loop; Sk = skip; YO = yarn over

Notes:

Project is worked back and forth in rows and then a simple hdc edging is added around the entire off-white square

Then more rounds are added in the additional colors

Lastly a simple shamrock is crocheted using 3 lacy hearts and sewn to the center of the square

Instructions for the Crochet Shamrock Square Pattern:

Center Off-White Square (worked in rows):

With Off-white ch 29

Row 1: 

(Sc, ch 1, dc) in 2^nd ch from hk; [sk next 2 chs, (sc, ch 1, dc) in next ch] across. Turn. (10 shells – Shell = (sc, ch 1, dc))

Row 2: 

Ch 2, (sc, ch 1, dc) in each ch-1 sp across; sc in last sc. Turn.

Rows 3+:  

Repeat Row 2 until piece makes a 7” x 7” square (approximately 20 rows)– Do not fasten off.

Edging of the Crochet Shamrock Square:

You will use stitch markers to mark various stitches at all the corners – these stitches are underlined in the directions below to help you remember to use the stitch marker

(For the first round of the edging each part of the shell is considered a stitch – sc, ch 1 and dc)

Round 1:

Ch 2 (does not count as a st), sk 1^st sc, (hdc in each of the next 6 sts; hdc in next dc, sk next ch, hdc in next sc) 3 times; hdc in each of the last 3 sts; (27 sts along Side 1); Ch 1,

*Mark each ch-1 of this round with a stitch marker to help with next round*

hdc in same last st as Side 1;  Now working down next side of square, work 26 hdc evenly spaced along ends of rows; ch 1, hdc in same last st as Side 2; Now working along Side 3 (which is the bottom of the first row of the project), [hdc in each of the next 12 sts, sk next st] twice; hdc in each of last 2 sts; ch 1, hdc in same last st as Side 3;  Now working along Side 4, work 26 hdc evenly spaced along the next side; ch 1, join with sl st to 1^st hdc of round. Fasten off.

Round 2:

With Tangerine join with dc in 1^st st of any side; dc in next st, 4-dcPOP in next st, ch 1; [dc in each of the next 2 sts; 4-dcPOP in next st, ch 1] across 8 more times; (For a total of 9 popcorn stitches on each side) 2 dc in next ch-1 sp (marked with a stitch marker);

(Note: mark these 2 dcs with stitch markers to help with the next round – you will mark all places that 2 dcs are worked into one st – at each corner)

ch 1; Repeat [ ] across next side 9 times; 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; Repeat [ ] across next side 9 times; 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; Repeat [] across next side 9 times; dc in same st as last popcorn, dc in same st as 1^st dc of round, ch 1, sl st to 1^st dc of round. Fasten off.

Round 3:

With Off-White join with hdc in1^st dc of Round 2; *hdc in each st across,

(Note: only work hdc in ch-1 sp after each popcorn and do not work in top of each popcorn)

2 hdc in each of the next 2 dcs

(Here mark the 2^nd and 3^rd hdc with a stitch marker for help on the next round and do for all 2^nd and 3^rd hdcs at each corner)

Hdc in next ch-1 sp;* Repeat * to * across each side. Fasten off.

Round 4:

With Guacamole join with hdc in any stitch on any side (not at corner); hdc in each st around; At corners (where stitch markers are): Work (2 hdc in 1^st marked st, ch 1, 2 hdc in next marked st). Fasten off.

Note: Mark each ch-1 sp with a stitch marker

Round 5:

With Dark Leaf join with dc in any st on a side (not at corner); dc in each st around; At corners (where ch-1 sp is marked with stitch marker): Work (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp. Fasten off.

Little Lacy Heart – Make 3:

Round 1:

With Guacamole and in an adjustable ring work, (Beg. Popcorn, ch 3); (Popcorn, ch 3) 4 times; join with sl st to top of Beg. Popcorn. (5 popcorns, 5 ch-3 sps)

Round 2:

Ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, tr, ch 3, dc, ch 2) in next ch-3 sp; hdc in next Popcorn, ch 1, hdc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, extdc in next Popcorn (bottom point of heart), ch 2, hdc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, hdc in next Popcorn, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, tr, ch 3, dc, ch 3) in next ch-3 sp, sl st in starting sl st. Fasten off.

Round 3:

Join Dark Leaf with a sl st in sl st at top of heart; (Ch 3, sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sl st in next st) 3 times; (ch 3, sl st in next ch-sp) 3 times; ch 3, sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in same st (bottom point of heart); (ch 3, sl st in next ch-sp) 3 times; ch 3, sl st in next st; (ch 3, sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sl st in next st) 3 times ending with sl st in last sl st of Round 2. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly/finishing.

Finishing Heart:

With ending yarn tail on yarn needle, thread needle from top center of heart down to Popcorn stitch below (This helps the top center of heart to tuck in better and give more shape to the curved sides of the heart)

Continue threading this yarn tail to where beginning yarn tail comes out of Round 1

Pull beginning yarn tail tight and tie in a double knot with ending yarn tail

Weave in both ends and trim off excess 

Stem:

With Guacamole ch 13. Fasten off.

With Dark Leaf sl st in each ch across. Fasten off.

Finishing the Crochet Shamrock Square:

Using sewing pins pin hearts and stem in center of square to make the shamrock shape using photo as a guide

Using Dark Leaf yarn tails and yarn needle sew hearts onto square working through the center ch of each ch-3 sp around edging of each heart

Sew bottom points of hearts together and to square

Pin on stem and sew in place using yarn needle and yarn tails

Weave in all ends on Wrong Side of square

Optional:  Sew up holes created by the edging stitches along the bottom edge of off-white square section with tapestry needle and matching yarn
