Crochet Flower Arrangement

The Crochet Flower Arrangement is a simple yet elegant decoration you can crochet for your home or for a gift very easily. It is made with Size 10 cotton crochet thread and mostly chains and basic stitches. While in my local craft store recently I noticed several pretty flower decorations that were made out of black wire. As much as I love colorful flowers, I realized I also love the flower silhouette look because it highlights the intricate shapes of flowers and plants showcasing another layer of their beauty. Immediately my mind thought of how I could replicate the look with crochet stitches and yarn and I came up with this arrangement design.

“Magical Supply” to Make this Project

The main supply you will need to make this decoration (after the black thread and steel hook) is a good quality fabric stiffener. This supply works like “magic” in that you soak your thread creations with it, shape them how you want with pins and then let them dry overnight. Tada! In the morning you have beautiful motifs that hold their shape! I like to use the Fabric Stiffener by Crafter’s Pick – I find mine at Hobby Lobby. Here’s a pro tip for you: Write the date of purchase on the bottle with a permanent marker. After about a year or 2 you’ll need to buy a new bottle so the stiffener works best.

Stitches Used in the Crochet Flower Arrangement:

To make the Crochet Flower Arrangement you’ll need to know how to do these stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and half double crochet. For one of the flowers I use an adjustable ring, too. Of course, if you haven’t worked with a tiny hook and thin thread before, this will take some practice. But you can always practice the flower patterns with medium weight yarn and a larger hook to get the hang of the stitches before you move on to using thread. The key to making these motifs is crocheting your chains all the same size which requires consistent tension.

Skill Level: Intermediate

(This project uses all basic stitches but working with thin thread can be challenging)

Measurements:

Each flower stem is about 8″ long

The completed arrangement is approximately 10″ tall x 12″ wide

Size 10 cotton crochet thread – black

1.5 mm hook

Embroidery needle (this is smaller than the usual yarn needle and works better with thread)

Fabric Stiffener

Heavy-duty aluminum foil

Rust-proof pins

Blocking board or corkboard

18 gauge black wire (about 10-15 feet)

Macrame cording

5.5 mm (I ) hook

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Pliers

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Adjustable Ring =Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through lp with hk;

Hidden Increase =When working 2 stitches into 1 stitch work first stitch in back loop only and then work second stitch in both loops

Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together)= Insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop; insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Notes:

Several flower shapes are crocheted with thread

The shapes are stiffened and added to wire stems

Lastly a vase shape is crocheted and everything is glued together

Some of the flowers have the wire added before the stiffener (Daisy, Half Daisy, Fern Leaf) and others (Heart, 5-petal, Simple flower) have the wire added after stiffening

Instructions for the Crochet Flower Arrangement by Jennifer E Ryan:

All flowers are made with black thread and 1.5mm hook

Daisy – Make 3:

Ch 10 – join with sl st to form ring;

(Ch 16, sl st in same st, sl st in next st) around; Fasten off with long tail for assembly. (10 petals)

Cut 15” piece of wire and form one end into small circle that matches the diameter of the center of flower

Using yarn tails and needle sew wire circle on to Wrong Side of center flower circle

Heart – Make1:

Ch  32 – join with sl st to form ring. Fasten off.

Half Daisy – Make 1:

Ch 15 – join with sl st to form ring;

(Ch 16, sl st in same st, sl st in next st) 6 times leave remaining chains unworked; Fasten off with long tail for assembly. (6 petals)

Cut 15” piece of wire and form end into a T that is about ½” wide

Using yarn tails and needle sew T end to Wrong Side of flower along the bottom edge of the center circle (where petals all line up)

5-Petal Flower – Make 1:

Work 5 hdc in an adjustable ring – join with sl st.

(ch 18, sl st in same st, sl st in next st) around. Fasten off. (5 petals)

Simple Flower – Make 1:

This piece is made in 3 pieces – 2 crocheted lengths and one wire length

Piece 1 – Ch 9, join with sl st to form ring;

Ch 20;

Ch 9, sl st in 9^th ch from hook to form ring. Fasten off.

Piece 2 – Ch 9, join with sl st to form ring;

Ch 15;

Ch 9, sl st in 9^th ch from hk to form ring. Fasten off.

Fern Leaf – Make 2:

Ch 5

(ch 20, sl st in 20^th ch from hk to form loop; ch 3) 3 times;

(ch 16, sl st in 16^th ch from hk to form loop; ch 3) 3 times;

(ch 12, sl st in 12^th ch from hk to form loop; ch 3) 3 times;

(ch 8, sl st in 8^th ch from hk) 3 times;

Now working down along other side of loops just created;

Sl st in next 3 chs;

(ch 12, sl st in 12^th ch from hk to form loop; sl st in next 3 chs) 3 times;

(ch 16, sl st in 16^th ch from hk to form loop; sl st in next 3 chs) 3 times;

(ch 20, sl st in 20^th ch from hk to form loop; sl st in next 3 chs) 3 times;

Sl st in remaining 2 chs. Fasten off. (9 leaves each side with 3 on top)

Cut 15” piece of wire and form a small loop at one end

With thread and yarn needle sew wire to center stem of leaf from top to bottom

Vase:

With macrame cording and larger hook ch 6

Row 1:

Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 2:

Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc across to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (7 sc)

**You can do the “hidden increase” technique for all “2 sc” if you want – since the macrame cording is very thick, the increase can create a large hole in your project. By doing the “hidden increase” you prevent the hole**

Row 3:

Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 4:

Repeat Row 2 (9 sc)

Row 5:

Repeat Row 3

Row 6:

Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (7 sc)

**You may want to do the “hidden decrease” technique – since the macrame cording is very thick, sc2tog can sometimes create a hole. Using the hidden decrease prevents the hole**

Row 7:

Repeat Row 3

Row 8:

Repeat Row 6 (5 sc)

Row 9:

Repeat Row 6 (3 sc)

Row 10:

Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc across row; insert hk into lp on side base of last sc just made, YO, pull up a lp, YO, pull through both lps on hk. Do not fasten off.

Edging:

Ch 1, work sl st loosely around edge of vase shape – join with sl st to 1st st of last row. Fasten off.

Finishing and Assembly:

Add fabric stiffener to all thread elements and lay on aluminum foil pinning shapes into place with rust-proof pins

Here are some notes about each shape:

Daisy: Make sure each petal loop is open; Only get stiffener on the thread and not on wire stem

Heart: Form into heart with pins

Half-Daisy: Make sure center circle is formed into a dome or half circle shape with petals pointing down; Pin each petal so an open loop

Fern Leaf: Pin each leaf so open and pointing slightly upward

Simple Flower: Make sure each loop is open and lay out to have a slight curve – Piece 2 will curve inside Piece 1

5-Petal Flower: Pin each petal to have a heart shape

Let dry completely

Remove pins and from foil

Adding Wire Stems:

Heart:  Cut 15” wire length and insert through bottom point of heart with about 3” folded over; Wrap this excess around top of wire at point of heart several times – trim off excess

5-Petal Flower: Cut 15” wire length and form one end into small spiral that is same size as center of flower; Glue spiral to center of flower on Wrong Side

Simple Flower: Cut 15” wire length and form one end into small loop that matches loops of Pieces 1 & 2; Wrap wire around center of Pieces 1 & 2 while making sure end with small loop is correct length coming up from center

Curly Q – make 2:  Cut 15” wire length and wrap around pencil; Remove from pencil by sliding off carefully

You can form a leaf shape on any of the wire stems at this point – simply make a loop and twist wire; Use pliers to make end of loop pointy like a leaf

Putting It all Together:

Lay Vase Right Side down on work surface

Lay flower stems on vase adjusting height and placement as you like – you can use my photo as a guide

Once arranged like you want, hot glue stems in place on Wrong Side of vase & trim off excess wire

Hang on wall with 2 small nails at top sides of vase or sit on a shelf up next to a wall (The macrame cording makes for a nice thick vase base that can stand up well)

Optional:  Glue arrangement inside a frame

Optional: Use a few flowers to glue to a card with a paper vase shape
