Celtic Knot Baby Blanket

The Celtic Knot Baby Blanket is a very special collaborative project that combines a center Celtic Knot square with rounds of beautiful textured and cable stitches! This baby blanket project has been in the works for several months. My friend and crochet designer, Bonnie Barker, of Bonnie Bay Crochet, and I put our heads together to create this Celtic Knot Baby Blanket using some Paintbox yarn and a variety of simple and textured stitches to make a one-of-a-kind heirloom quality blanket for a precious baby.

Celtic Knot Square

I have designed several Celtic Knot Squares over the past several years and they are always a hit. I designed this one to be very simple to crochet and weave. Plus, inside the pattern you will find 2 color-coded printable diagrams – one for Right Handers and one for Left Handers! To make the Celtic Knot center you only need to know how to chain, slip stitch, single crochet and half double crochet. 🙂

Other Stitches Used in the Celtic Knot Baby Blanket

Bonnie is a master at crochet cable stitches! She has over a thousand videos on her YouTube Channel demonstrating how to make all sorts of gorgeous blankets, garments and accessories. So, naturally her section of the project includes a variety of cable stitches: Low Ridge, Arrow Stitch, Celtic Weave Stitch, Front and Back Post Stitches and pretty cable twists. These types of stitches use front post and back post stitches often. This might sound tricky but they are actually pretty easy once you get the hang of them. The post stitches have you working around the body of the stitch instead of working into the top 2 loops. By doing this technique you create wonderful texture and can make all kinds of easy to intricate cables!

Yarn: Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (100% acrylic, 3.53 oz/100 g, 302 yds/276 m)

For the Pinks Version:

3-4 skeins in #104 Stormy Grey (background color)

1 skein each in #143 Raspberry Pink, #150 Bubblegum Pink,

For the Blues Version:

3-4 skeins in #202 Champagne White (background color)

 1 each in #136 Dolphin Blue, #137 Midnight Blue

or 2 contrasting colors of your choice.

Hook: 3.75 mm (F) for Center Square and 4.0 mm (G) or 5.0 mm (H) for surrounding stitches

Other Supplies:

Yarn needle

Cork board (at least 12” square)

(Foam core poster board, blocking boards or Styrofoam square would also work well)

15-20 straight sewing pins

 6 stitch markers (4 in one color, 2 in another color)

  3. I love the colors of the blue one! And the whole project immediately made me wonder about sizing it up to make for my bed.

    1. It is possible to size it up by using thicker yarn and a larger hook and extending each of the white/gray sections – Glad to hear you like the blue one! 🙂

Each of my kids want one of these blankets for their current babies/children, and FUTURE babies (I was waiting for an announcement, but not yet). We have been planning another family trip to Ireland to visit county Cork and explore where my husband’s family originated. This blanket pattern would also be beautiful in a larger size.

  15. I really love this design! I’m definitely going to make this blanket after Christmas. As I have 7 grandchildren I might have to make 7 and put them away for when they would have a baby, which is way down the road but, I’m planning now.
    I’m definitely making the first one in shades of green for the Celtic cross nd aran for the rest.🇮🇪💚☘️

  17. I love all of your patterns. And now a collaborative with Bonnie?! I have used so many of your patterns and tutorials to make additions to my home or gifts for loved ones. The minute I saw this blanket I immediately thought of my bonus god-babies. A very dear friend of mine thought for sure she was never going to have kids of her own. She got her miracle baby but not without complication and some time in the NICU. But my god-daughter is now 10 months old and I don’t know if I will ever lose the awe and immensely deep affection for her and especially her mother; finally fulfilling the role that we all knew she would do so well, but had given up hope she would ever get to. A month after she came, my god-son arrived and our family just continues to grow. My heart is so full. And your patterns help me express that love. Thank you for all you do!!!

  24. One of the prettiest blankets I have seen. Done in a worsted or Aran weight in just about any color combination it would make a lovely room accent. Personally….I’m channeling the center square for a cocoon sweater…maybe in mossy green and a tweedy medium grey/brown. The edging pattern would make a lovely shawl collar accent.Thank you for a pattern that has so many possibilities.

As I try new ones out, I tend to give them away or ask my girls if they know a little one coming to give it to. I might just keep this one for myself.
