Crochet Charm Ornament
The Crochet Charm Ornament works up quickly and uses mostly basic stitches. I have enjoyed making ornaments with some clear flat round ornament balls that I found at my local craft store and on-line. This version is super fun because it is like a “blank canvas” for all sorts of variations that can be customized and personalized for anyone!

Making Your Ornament Unique with Embellishments
There are so many great craft supplies available now all throughout the year on-line and at your local craft store. I love to shop in the jewelry, wedding and seasonal aisles at Hobby Lobby (especially when there are 50% off sales 😉) to find unique and personalized additions for my crochet projects. The basic structure of this ornament includes a simple plain circle motif in the center that can feature all kinds of embellishments: charms, beads, sequins, buttons and more! Stitches Used in the Crochet Charm Ornament
To make the Crochet Charm Ornament you will need to know how to do these stitches: chain, slip stitch, double crochet, half double crochet and single crochet. There is one other very tall stitch, the double treble crochet stitch, that is used one time – it is much easier than it sounds and I show you how to do it in the video tutorial. You’ll also need to know how to do an adjustable ring but I give you an alternative in the pattern below. (Of course, this part is also demonstrated in the video tutorial. 🙂) The most challenging part of this project is working with a tiny hook (1.5mm) and the thin thread (Size 10) but you can always practice the pattern with thicker yarn and a larger hook. It really does work up quickly – I was able to crochet one in less than 30 minutes.

This is rated Easy because the stitches used are basic stitches and the construction is very simple – Working with thin thread and a tiny hook can be challenging especially if you have never done it before so if this is the case for you, then this project might be considered “Intermediate” for you.

1.5mm hook – This Clover hook has a silicone handle which helps prevent hand cramping
Embroidery needle (A standard yarn needle is too big when working with thread)
Ornament ball – 3” flat round clear (You can find these in glass or plastic – plastic works well if you plan on sending the project to someone in the mail)
Various charms and embellishments -There are so many options! I show you a wide variety of ideas in the video tutorial here – I had fun walking around my local Hobby Lobby looking for things to add to this ornament 🙂
Hot glue gun/glue sticks or E6000
Sewing needle and matching thread
Optional: Small amount of felt
1/4″ ribbon (for hanging)
Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Adjustable Ring: Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through loop with hook;

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook
Dtr (double treble crochet) = YO 3 times; insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 4 times

Project is worked in the round
Ornament ball is inserted halfway through the last round
A variety of embellishments are added at the end of Round 8 or once crocheted piece is secured to the ball

I also demonstrate how to do all of the stitches, how to secure the crocheted piece to the ornament ball and how to add a wide variety of these embellishments.

Instructions for the Crochet Charm Ornament:
Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above
Round 1:
In an adjustable ring work (ch 3, 12 dc) and join with sl st to 1st dc. (12 dc)
(Here’s the alternative to doing the adjustable ring: Ch 4, work 12 dc in 4th ch from hk; join with sl st to 1st dc. – This will create hole in the center that can be sewn up with the yarn tail and needle or can be covered up by your choice of embellishment)
Round 2:
Ch 3, dc in same st; 2 dc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st dc. (24 dc)
Rounds 1-3 completed
Round 3:
Ch 3, dc in same st; dc in next st; (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around; join with sl st to 1st dc. (36 dc)
Round 4:
Ch 1, sc in same st; (ch 5, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st) around ending with ch 3, hdc in 1st sc for last ch-5 sp. (10 ch-5 sps)
Round 5:
Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 5, sc in next ch-sp) around ending with ch 3, hdc in 1st sc for last ch-5 sp. (10 ch-5 sps)
Round 6:
Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 7, sc in next ch-sp) around ending with ch 4, dc in 1st sc for last ch-7 sp. (10 ch-7 sps)
Round 7:
Repeat Round 6
**Remove hook and place stitch marker in working loop – With embroidery needle make knot at beginning yarn tail after pulling center adjustable ring tight; weave in end on Wrong Side; Replace hook into working loop**
**Another note: You may want to add your embellishment now when it is easier to access the back of the center circle – see below for how best to attach embellilshments**
Round 8:
**Note: After complete one ch-10 sp make sure that it fits over the top stem of the ornament – Remove wire loop and stem cover first – if does not fit, then add a few chains to the first ch-sp and test again. Once fits over stem, mark with a stitch marker so you know which one is largest when attaching crocheted piece to ornament ball**
Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 10, sc in next ch-sp) around ending with ch 5, dtr in 1st sc for last ch-10 sp. (10 ch-10 sps)

Round 9:
Remove wire loop and stem cover first
Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 3, sc in next ch-sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-sp) around halfway; Insert ornament ball placing largest ch-sp over stem (if needed) and continue: (ch 3, sc in next ch-sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-sp) making sure crocheted piece is snug around ball; You may need to adjust the number of chains made so piece fits well; (It’s easy to simply add chains if you need more length); end with sl st in 1st sc of round. Fasten off. Replace wire loop and stem cover.
Knot and weave in yarn tail at end.
Add 6-8″ ribbon to top loop for hanging
Finishing for the Crochet Charm Ornament:
Add various embellishments to make your ornament unique and personalized!
Jewelry Charm:
With matching thread and sewing needle sew on charm using top loop – If you want to add a simple felt shape, sew charm to felt first and then hot glue felt to center circle on ornament
Bead:
Using matching thread and needle sew bead to center of circle
Button:
Using matching thread and needle sew button to center of circle
Or you can clip off the button loop using snips/pliers and glue the button to the center circle with E6000 glue
Sequin:
With matching thread and needle sew sequin to center circle – this works best if you use a small seed bead at center hole of sequin: Pass needle up through center of sequin and through bead; Then pass needle back through center of sequin and into center circle
Wedding Embellishment (Mini Photo Frame):
Print out a small photo to match the inner size of the frame and cut to fit
Insert into frame making sure to surround photo with clear acetate pieces
With matching sewing thread and needle sew on frame stitching through top loop
Crocheted Motif
Crochet a small motif and hot glue (or sew) it to the center circle
I have many motifs that would work here on the blog or in my Etsy Shop. Here are a few to try:
(Just make the motif with the Size 10 thread and you will get a mini-motif! 🙂)
