Crochet Christmas Earrings

Christmas will be here before you know it so I have a quick project for you – Crochet Christmas Earrings made with little holly leaves!

I have always loved the shape and look of holly leaves – we have a few bushes in our yard and they always look great. Deep green waxy and pointy leaves with bright red berries – the birds love them, too. 🙂

Yarn & Stitches Used for the Crochet Christmas Earrings

In order to get these so cute and tiny I used Size 10 and Size 20 crochet thread along with some steel hooks. I enjoy creating projects with these smaller supplies but it does take a little getting used to.

Don’t worry – you can work up this pattern with larger yarn and hook to get the hang of it and then switch to the smaller thread later. Plus, the stitches are very basic and easy to make – slip stitch, double crochet, single crochet, half double crochet and a little picot (all explained below).

Skill Level: Intermediate

(Due to Size 10 and Size 20 thread)

(If you are new to working with thread, then practice the pattern with medium weight yarn and a size H/5.5mm hook – you’ll see that the stitches are very easy – I also recommend crocheting this project in sunlight or in bright indoor light)

Measurements of the Crochet Christmas Earrings:

Light Green Leaf = 1 1/8” long x 1/2″ wide;

Dark Green Leaf = 1 3/8” long x 3/4″ wide;

Berry = ¼” diameter

I used a pretty green for the Size 10 thread to make the larger leaves. I ordered some beautiful metallic Size 20 thread from Etsy to crochet the berries and smaller leaves – See links below

Supplies for the Crochet Christmas Earrings:

Yarn: Size 10 crochet thread and Size 20 crochet thread

(Can also use embroidery thread)

Green Size 10 thread: Aunt Lydia’s Myrtle Green Thread

Metallic Red and Green Camellia by Yarnart: Sold by Rowan Originals here

Hooks: 7/1.5mm and 9/1.25mm steel crochet hooks

Jewelry pliers with small needle and earring wires and small wire rings

Other Tools: Jewelry pliers (#4) and embroidery needle (has smaller eye – #3)

Other Supplies: 2 Earring wires (#1 in photo above)

2 heavy gauge jump rings (6mm) (#2)

Optional: Paintbrush and fabric stiffener

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into st, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Ch-2 picot = Ch 2, sl st in back bump of 2^nd ch from hk

Instructions for the Crochet Christmas Earrings:

Dark Green Leaf – Make 2:

With larger hook and dark green Size 10 thread, ch 10

Sl st in 2^nd ch from hk, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, ch-2 picot in next ch,

Hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, ch-2 picot in next ch, hdc in

next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next ch.

Now working on other side of ch, ch 1, sl st in next ch, sc in next ch, hdc in

next ch, ch-2 picot in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch,

ch-2 picot in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch, ch 1, sl st in

top point of leaf. Fasten off.

Even though they look the same size here. The dark green leaf should be slightly bigger than your light green leaf **Tip: If they are turning out the same size, add a sl st or sc border to the darker leaf

Light Green Leaf – Make 2:

With smaller hook and light green Size 20 thread, ch 14

Sl st in 2^nd ch from hk, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, ch-2 picot

in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in

next ch, ch-2 picot, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch.

Now working in the other side of the ch: ch 1, sl st in 1^st ch, sc in next ch,

hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, ch-2 picot in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next

ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, ch-2 picot in next ch, dc in

next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. Fasten off.

The berries are very tiny – you may want to use a double strand or add beads or gems with glue instead; **Tip: I tied the yarn tails in a tight double knot and trimmed off the excess for all but 2 of the 6 total berries – Then I sealed the knots with a tiny dab of clear nail polish – Lastly I used the yarn tails to sew all berries to the leaves

Berries – Make 6:

With smaller hook and Metallic Red thread, work 8 sc in an adjustable ring

Sl st to 1^st sc to join. Pop center out toward you and tighten ring. Fasten off

with a double knot. Leave long tails for assembly.

Finishing of the Crochet Christmas Earrings:

Using photo as a guide sew leaves together with dark green thread creating

large center “vein” with one long stitch; Then sew together at top points

with several stitches

Using yarn tails of berries sew berries on according to placement in the photo

Tie tail ends on wrong side of project and secure with clear nail polish, hot

glue or cover with a small circle of felt

Open earring wire loop with pliers and join to jump ring; Close earring wire loop

Optional: Paint back of project with fabric stiffener and let dry completely being careful to not get any stiffener on Right Side or on findings
