Easy Crochet Snowflake

The Easy Crochet Snowflake uses only basic crochet stitches and just 2 rounds! So this means you can make it quickly and finish a bunch before Christmas this year. 😉 I had fun experimenting with different embellishments for this project and I explain those below and even take you step-by-step in a video tutorial, too. I think crochet snowflakes are a great addition to any Christmas decor especially when you place them on a green tree or garland – the contrast is so pretty!

Yarn Used for the Easy Crochet Snowflake

My first couple snowflakes I crocheted with the very thin Size 10 cotton crochet thread but since several people find that very challenging, I thought I would make the same exact pattern with a larger hook and Size 3 cotton thread. This thicker thread made the snowflake almost double in size but it was much easier to see the stitches and still worked up just as quick! I always have several balls of Size 10 and Size 3 thread in my stash – I love the look of both.

Stitches You Need to Know to Make This Easy Crochet Snowflake

To make this Easy Crochet Snowflake you need to know how to chain, slip stitch, and half double crochet – that’s it! It never gets old the fact that you can make so many things with only basic beginner stitches. 🙂 You’ll also need to stiffen your snowflake with some fabric stiffener (or you can use white glue). Have you ever stiffened your crochet projects before? It’s fun! This is an essential step to making the snowflake spokes stand out well and helping all of the stitches to look their best. (You can see what I mean with a “before stiffening” photo I included below). If you’ve never worked with fabric stiffener before, no worries – I have you covered with my explanations and the video tutorial. I love seeing how my snowflakes look after the stiffener dries overnight – it’s a fun little “snowflake reveal”.

Size 10 cotton crochet thread  (1 ball) or Size 3 cotton crochet thread (1 ball) in White

1.5mm (for Size 10 thread) or 2.75mm (for Size 3 thread)

Embroidery needle

Cork board (8” x 8” square) or blocking board – something that will let you put pins in it

Fabric stiffener

Aluminum foil

Rust-proof pins (3-10)

Optional: Iridescent fabric or paper, hot glue gun and glue sticks, glitter, flat back gems, clear acetate, gem picker

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Ch-3 picot (chain 3 picot) = Chain 3, sl st in back bar of 3rd chain from hook

Ch-5 picot (chain 5 picot) =Chain 5, sl st in back bar of 5th chain from hook

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Notes:

This project is worked in the round with the Right Side facing

After the 2 rounds are crocheted the snowflake is stiffened

Lastly a variety of embellishments are added

Instructions for the Easy Crochet Snowflake

All special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Ch 37

Round 1: 

Working in the back bar of the chain, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in 3^rd ch from hk; [hdc in each of the next 5 chs, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next ch] 5 times; hdc in remaining 4 chs; join with sl st to top of turning ch.

Round 2: 

Ch 1, sl st in next st, ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 sp;

[ch 12, ch-3 picot, ch 12, sl st in same ch-2 sp; ch 4, sk each of next 3 sts, sl st in next st, ch 6, ch-5 picot, ch 2, (ch-5 picot) 3 times; sl st to base of 3^rd ch-5 picot from hk, ch 2, sl st to 1^st ch-5 picot, ch-5 picot, ch 6, sl st in same st on Round 1; ch 4, sl st in next ch-2 sp] around ending with sl st in base of first ch-12. Fasten off.

Use yarn tail at beginning of Round 1 to attach beginning bottom edge of Round 1 to ending bottom edge of Round 1 and weave in

Weave in other yarn tail

Here is the snowflake once the crocheting is complete – it needs to be stiffened to help the spokes stand out and take shape

Finishing and Assembly for the Easy Crochet Snowflake

Remember all of these steps are shown in detail in the video tutorial here

Stiffen snowflake:

Prepare surface – lay aluminum foil over corkboard and pin in place

Coat snowflake with stiffener making sure thoroughly soaked through

Lay snowflake on foil with Right Side facing and pin center into hexagon shape

Next extend all “fancy spokes” (these are the spokes with the ch-5 picots) and pin in place

Then open up all ch-12 sps into large ovals and pin in place (see photo as a guide)

Let dry completely (overnight) and remove all pins

Optional – Add glitter:

Lay stiffened snowflake on a clean piece of aluminum foil Right Side facing; With a paintbrush lightly coat with more fabric stiffener; Lay snowflake on piece of paper that has fold down the middle; Sprinkle on glitter and shake off excess; Lay snowflake on clean surface to dry (Use paper to put excess glitter back in container)

Optional – Add iridescent fabric or paper:

Glue iridescent fabric or paper to center hexagon opening on Wrong Side of snowflake with hot glue gun

If adding fabric, apply some fabric stiffener to edges of fabric to prevent fraying

If desired, you can also glue fabric to large oval openings

Optional – Add a photo to center:

You could also add a photo to the center opening – I recommend adding a small piece of clear acetate over the photo to protect it and a matching piece of cardstock on the back

Add photo with hot glue (as you added the fabric)
