Celtic Christmas Crochet Earrings
The Celtic Christmas Crochet Earrings are a fun and quick project that uses basic crochet stitches and a small amount of Size 10 cotton crochet thread. These earrings are modeled after my very popular Celtic Christmas Garland (that you can see here). Since everyone loves the elegant simplicity of the Celtic Christmas Tree, I thought it would be good to make a mini-version that can be worn as earrings or even a simple pendant necklace!

Skill Level: Intermediate
Even though the stitches used in this project are basic it can be a challenge to work with Size 10 thread because it is very thin and you need to use a very small crochet hook. The knot weaving is fairly easy but again, because it is so small, it requires a little extra patience and experience working with your hands. If you LOVE this project but have never worked with Size 10 thread before, then I recommend you practice the stitches with thicker yarn and a larger hook. Then you can try working with Size 3 thread (this is a little thicker than the Size 10) before moving down to the Size 10.

Variations of the Project:
When I first created a pair of these earrings I wanted to include some kind of crocheted star for the top but after a bunch of experimenting, I just couldn’t get a crocheted star to look right. So, I made the earrings without a star which is one option you can make. But I couldn’t stop thinking about how I could possibly add a star. I thought about adding a star-shaped sequin but it didn’t look right sewn to the top of the tree. I had a vision of a star being above the top of the tree and thought this might be possible if I could find a gold star bead small enough. Tada! Thanks to a quick search on Amazon I found the perfect gold star beads that I think add the perfect touch to this project. Of course, they are optional but I LOVE how they look for the earrings and pendant necklace versions.
Stitches Used in the Celtic Christmas Crochet Earrings
To make these earrings you need to know how to chain, single crochet and slip stitch – that’s it! There is one other stitch that is an easy variation on the single crochet stitch. In addition to a written explanation of this stitch I also provide a link to a short video tutorial to help you. I love how you can make something so elegant and unique using the most basic of crochet stitches. 🙂

Supplies for the Celtic Christmas Crochet Earrings
As mentioned above you will need Size 10 cotton crochet thread in 2 colors. Two contrasting colors work best because it helps you see the design of the Celtic Knot. I like to use 2 shades of the same color or a silver or gold metallic thread. For the metallic thread I prefer DMC’s metallic embroidery thread which you can purchase here. It really looks great in delicate crochet projects like this one.

1.5 mm crochet hook by Clover (these have a nice silicone handle that prevents your hand from getting sore)
Embroidery needle (this works better with the thin thread than your standard yarn needle)
Corkboard (4″ x 4″) (to help with weaving the knot)
Aluminum foil (small square)
Optional: Star beads and beading needle; necklace chain, gold metallic embroidery thread

The 13-page large-print instructions include over 25 color photos and detailed explanations of each stitch and step of the project. Also included is a Celtic Knot diagram to help you weave the knot – there is one for Right Handers and one for Left Handers! (Left Handers crochet in the opposite direction of Right Handers. By having their own diagram they can weave the knot with less confusion. 🙂) There are several short video tutorial links to help with some of the stitches and techniques as well.
