Cute Crochet Animals
Have you ever made a cute crochet animal? I highly recommend it! It is fun to create something that is quick, easy and super cute. It is also a lot of fun to give these types of projects as gifts – when you present them to someone, they always smile and claim that the cuteness brightens their day. 🙂
Here is an easy and FREE crochet pattern for you that I’m calling the “Mushroom Cuties”.
Crochet Mushrooms and Velvet Yarn – so soft!
Mushrooms are easy to crochet and very trendy right now. I thought that adding ears, feet and facial features to a mushroom would make for a fun project that would be a perfect gift for a teacher to sit on her desk or for a kid you know that loves anything huggable and cute.
These adorable stuffed animals use simple beginner stitches and a small amount of the luxurious velvet yarn. The world could use more cuteness like this, don’t you think?
Skill Level: Easy
Measurements:
Large Mushroom cutie = Approximately 4 1/2″ tall x 3″ wide
Small Mushroom cutie = Approximately 2 1/2″ tall x 1 3/4″ wide
Supplies:

Velvet Yarn – 1 skein red (bulky), 1 skein white (aran/medium weight), small amount tan
(Velvet yarns come in bulky and in medium weight – because the white I used was thinner than the red, I used a double-strand of it for both white bases but then for the ears and feet, I used a single-strand and the smaller hook)
Small amount black embroidery floss or Size 10 cotton crochet thread
5.5mm hook (I) and 4 mm (G) hook
6 mm & 4 mm Safety eyes (2 of each size) – Be very careful with the safety eyes if giving this project to a young child – Make sure they are absolutely secure and consider using the extra security of gluing felt to the back (as explained below). If they are not secure enough, then don’t use the safety eyes and embroider eyes on with thread – it is best to be safe!

Embroidery needle
Small amount of Polyfil
Optional: Small amount of white felt
Notes:
All parts are crocheted and then sewn together
The mushroom base and top are crocheted in the round
When fastening off leave a long yarn tail for assembly

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Adjustable Ring-Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through lp with hk; work stitches into loop and then pull yarn tail to tighten and close up center hole

Front Loop Only: insert hk through front loop of each stitch
Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) = Insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk
Ch = chain; Sp = space; Hk = hook; Lp = loop; Sk = skip; YO = yarn over

Instructions for The Mushroom Cuties:
Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above
Large Cutie Base:
Working with a double strand of the white velvet yarn, ch 21
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Do not turn. (20 sc)
Round 2: Now working in rounds, sl st in 1st sc of Round 1 to form a tube; ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st. (20 sc)
Rounds 4-8: Repeat Round 3. Fasten off.
Large Mushroom Top:
Work this part as a spiral and use stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round as you go
Round 1: With red work 6 sc in an adjustable ring (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
Round 3: (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around. (18 sc)
Round 4: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 2 sts) around. (24 sc)
Round 5: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 3 sts) around. (30 sc)
Round 6: Sc in each st around.
Round 7: Now working in the Front Loop Only, sc in each st around. Fasten off.
Large Feet – Make 2:
With single-strand of white velvet and 5.5mm hook, ch 3
2 dc in 3rd ch from hk
ch 3, sl st in same ch as 2 dcs just made. Fasten off.
Large Ears – make 2:
With 4 mm hk and single strand of white velvet, ch 3
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in next ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog over next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Large Bottom Circle:
With a double strand of white and larger hook, work as for Rounds 1-3 of Large Mushroom Top
Small Cutie Base:
With double-strand of white velvet and 5.5mm hk, ch 11
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Do not turn. (10 sc)
Round 2: Join with sl st to 1st sc of Round 1 to form a tube; ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around.
Rounds 4-5: Repeat Round 3. Fasten off.
Small Mushroom Top:
With red velvet and 5.5mm hk, work Round 1 and 2 as for Large Mushroom Top
Round 3: Sc in each of 1st 3 sts; 2 sc in next st; (sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 more times; join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off. (16 sc)
Small Feet – Make 2:
With single strand of white velvet and size 4 mm hk, ch 3
Dc in 3rd ch from hk; ch 3, sl st in same ch. Fasten off.
Small Ears – Make 2:
With a single strand of white velvet and size 4 mm hk, ch 2
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Small Bottom Circle:
With double-strand of white work as for Round 1 of Large Mushroom Top
Finishing/Assembly:
With yarn tails and yarn needle sew mushroom tops to bases passing through loops on Wrong Sides of tops and last round of bases
Tie yarn tails of feet together
Using photo as a guide sew on feet and ears
Add safety eyes and noses to base; Embroider face details and whiskers with embroidery needle and thread – Since these safety eyes are very small, you may want to add a small piece of fabric or felt as an extra anchor behind the eye
Adding Felt Eye Anchor:
Simply cut a small square of felt to cover the area behind the eyes on the inside of project – cut 2 holes in the felt that line up with the eyes and fabric glue the felt to inside of project behind eyes; Then add on safety lock piece over felt – this will help ensure that the eyes do not pull through the crocheted stitches – But even with this felt backing, please make sure the eyes will not pop out or come loose before giving to a young child. If there is any doubt about them staying, then it is best to embroider eyes with thread or yarn
Embroider “spots” on both tops
Stuff both bases with polyfil
Sew on bottom circles
