Easy Bean Stitch Hot Pad

The Easy Bean Stitch Hot Pad is fun to crochet and works up fast! I LOVE how the color changes look when working this stitch in the beautiful colorways of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton yarn. This bean stitch is the “mini bean stitch” that is a simple variation of a puff stitch. It uses several “yarn overs” on your hook to create the texture and has a great rhythm to it once you get going. Plus, it is a ONE-row repeat! Woohoo! 🙂

I Love This Cotton Yarn in “Print” Colorways!

I was browsing the yarn aisle in Hobby Lobby several months ago and discovered these gorgeous color combinations! It was difficult to just pick one since I thought so many were pretty – so I bought several when everything was on sale! 😉 The color changes are medium in length which works well for a hot pad, dishcloth, spa cloth or crochet square project. Plus, each color in the skein has variations and shades of that one color that adds depth and interest to each row.

Hot Pad or Dishcloth? You Decide!

Because the Mini-Bean Stitch creates a lot of texture and we join 2 squares to make our hot pad, we end up having a nice thick square that protects our table (or your hands if you want to use it as a pot holder – I would recommend adding some cotton fabric in between the crochet layers to make it extra safe for your hands). But if you want to make a dishcloth, simply work up 1 square and tada! Your project is complete and ready to use. Which version are you going to make?

Stitches Used in the Easy Bean Stitch Hot Pad

To make the Easy Bean Stitch Hot Pad you’ll need to know the chain, single crochet and slip stitch. Then you’ll get a bunch of practice adding loops to your hook and working with them to complete the mini-bean stitch. I have it all explained for you in the stitch definitions below but if you’re someone who needs to watch a demo for your brain to figure it out, you are in the right place! Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

MB (mini-bean stitch) = Insert hook into next stitch, YO, draw up a loop, YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO, draw up a loop, YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through all 6 loops on hook, chain 1

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Sc hook rotate = Insert hook into next stitch; YO, draw up a loop; rotate hook counter clockwise 1 complete turn; YO, pull through both loops on hook (Left-Handers – rotate hook clockwise 1 complete turn)

Notes:

Project is worked back and forth in rows

Two identical squares are joined together and then the edging is added

Instructions for the Easy Bean Stitch Hot Pad by Jennifer E Ryan:

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Make 2 squares

Ch 30

(If you want to make a different size, simply chain an odd number and work your first row in sc; If you work this stitch without a sc row, then you would need an even number of stitches across your row)

Row 1:

Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (29 sc)

Row 2: 

Ch 2, (MB in next st, sk next st) across up to last st; MB in last st. Turn. (15 Mini Bean Sts)

Row 3: 

Ch 1 (for a total of 2 chains at the beg. of each row); now you will work in sp to LEFT of each MB across row (Left Handers will work in the sp to RIGHT of each MB): (MB st in next sp, sk next st) across; Work MB in sp to left of last MB in previous row. Turn. (15 Mini Bean Sts)

Repeat Row 3 for 20 times (for a total of 22 rows of MB). Fasten off.

Edging :

Join with sc at bottom right-hand corner (bottom left-hand corner for Left Handers); work sc evenly along side of rows to next corner; work 2 sc in corner; Now work sc in each mini-bean st and each ch-1 sp across top of square; Then work 2 sc in corner; Lastly work sc evenly along last side of square; join with sl st to 1st sc of Row 1. Fasten off.

Weave in ends

Finishing & Assembly:

Pick which square you would like to be the top of the hot pad (the one that looks best)

With the Right Side facing of best square, clip other square to the Wrong Side (with 2nd square’s Wrong Side facing up)

Optional: Insert square of cotton fabric between crochet squares; Fabric glue or sew in place to one square – This will add thickness and make safer to use as a pot holder (It’s important to use cotton fabric and cotton yarn since this will be in contact with heat)

Joining and Edging:

Round 1:

Join with sc in the center of any side making sure to insert hook through both loops of stitches along edge of both squares; continue working sc around to join squares together; join with sl st to 1st sc of round.

Round 2:

Sc hook rotate in each st around; join with sl st to base of 1 st st. Fasten off.

  2. What a cute pattern! I just started crocheting this with Hobby Lobby’s I Love This City Beat color yarn. It is fun and easy to make with the variegated yarn, and it works up fast. I plan to make a double thickness and use it as a trivet. Thank you for sharing this pattern wonderful pattern!

  3. This looks like a great stitch for a dishrag. It looks similar to the stitch my mom uses to make hot pads. They must be easy to make because she sends me more for every occasion.

  5. What an awesome pattern. Your color choices are excellent. I can hardly wait to make this hot pad. Gives me an excuse to go to Hobby Lobby to get this yarn. (Like I need an excuse.) Love their yarn. So many lovely colors to choose from and their yarn is so easy to work with. I usually wait till they have 30% off, (which is usually every other week) then I can get more yarn for my dollar. I always seem to come out with more than intended.

  9. Hi there. I’m a 72 year old with adult grandchildren and I fell in love with this pattern! I’ve never seen such beautiful colors in a cotton yarn before. I agree that it would make a terrific Easter gift, tucked into an Easter gift basket. I believe that I could make a basket from the same stitch to put this and a matching towel in. I am going to use this pattern to make an elongated rug that will fit on top of the cabinet that my family of Winstanley Pottery Cats sit on, in the variegated cotton it will resemble the clip rugs that my grandmother used to make when I was a little girl and that I and the family cats used to lay on. That was a long time ago, I will be 86 this year!

  26. Dishcloth or hotpad, who cares!!! It works well for both. Make the square bigger in a rectangle for a dishtowel to make a set. Would be a great Easter hostess gift with these great colors.

  34. Love the easy Bean stitch. Might shrink the hot pad to coaster size to match the mug cozy I made in this stitch. Also love the yarn used only wish it was available in australia
