Easy Crochet Kindle Sleeve

The Easy Crochet Kindle Sleeve is a simple project that works up quickly! I love to read and have enjoyed having a Kindle for the last 4 years. I do love having real books in my hands but having the Kindle is also great especially when you finish a book. The next one in the series is right there! Ready to be read – Yay! And it is much easier to travel with the slim Kindle when you want to read many books on a trip or vacation. 🙂 But since it is an electronic, I thought it would be good to create this sleeve to protect it and keep it safe on all of my adventures.

Simple Stitch – 1 Row Repeat!

I decided to use a simple stitch for the bulk of the Easy Crochet Kindle Sleeve. I love the texture that it gives to the project. It is very easy to make and suitable for a confident beginner. If you know how to do a single crochet, then you can do this stitch! Plus, the yarn I recommend is like a soft rope that does not split and has excellent stitch definition. This is one of my favorite yarns and comes in some pretty colors that you can see here.

With the combination of the thicker yarn (Size 5 “Bulky”) and an easy stitch that works up fast, you can crank out several of these Kindle sleeves in a day making them a perfect last-minute gift for a friend, family member or teacher. Of course, you’ll want to check on the size of the giftee’s Kindle or e-reader and make this project accordingly. Don’t worry – it is very easy to adjust the width and height of this pattern and I show how in the step-by-step video tutorial – see below! And it is fun to personalize this project with a special button or embellishment that goes with your loved one’s interests.

1 skein Size 5/Bulky weight rope-like yarn

(I used Bernat Maker by Yarnspirations in Steel Blue and Teal)

J/6 mm crochet hook

Yarn needle (with dull end)

Decorative button (and possibly matching thread and sewing needle)

Optional: Small amount of plastic canvas and felt to secure button

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

Sk (skip)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Notes:

Project is worked in the round after Row 1

I made this sleeve to fit my Kindle which is 5″ wide x almost 7″ tall

Instructions for the Easy Crochet Kindle Sleeve by Jennifer E Ryan:

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Ch 31 with a long yarn tail (to use to sew up the bottom opening later)

Row 1: 

Sc in 2^nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Do not turn.

Round 2: 

Now working in 1^st st of Row 1 with Right Side facing, insert hk into 1st st (this creates a tube and we will now be working in the round); YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st, YO, pull through st and 1^st lp on hk; YO, pull through both lps on hk; (Insert hk into same st as 2^nd half of previous st; YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st; YO, pull through st and 1^st lp on hk; YO, pull through both lps on hk) around.

When get to first textured stitch, do not join with a sl st; We will be working in a spiral without any joins between rounds.

You may notice a small gap where the beginning and end of Row 1 meet – we will sew this up later

Round 3:

(Insert hk into same st as 2^nd half of previous st; YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st; YO, pull through st and 1^st lp on hk; YO, pull through both lps on hk) around.

Continue to repeat Round 3 and work in a spiral until height desired making sure to end in line with the beginning yarn tail. (see photo above) Sl st in next st.

Fasten off.

Finishing & Assembly:

Turn so Wrong Side facing

Using yarn needle and long yarn tail at bottom, sew up gap in Row 1 and then sew up bottom opening using the whipstitch (making sure the “gap” area is in the center back).

Ch 20 and make a loop

Sew this loop to top center inside of sleeve

Attach button about 3 rounds from the top edge making sure closure loop fits around well

Optional: Sew button to small square of plastic canvas to add stability (see video tutorial for detailed demonstration) and sew matching felt over canvas
