Pumpkin Treat Bag
This cute crocheted pumpkin bag can’t wait to go Trick or Treating with your little one!
In this blog post I give you all the steps you need to make one of these pumpkin bags. You’ll find the detailed pattern, a list of special stitches and several close-up color photos to help you be successful. Plus, crochet projects with eyes, arms and legs are so much fun to create! 🙂
Bag base is made with the simple single crochet stitch and so are most of the other details. This pumpkin accessory is a great project to practice increasing in single crochet and using the technique to make various shapes.
The Pumpkin Treat Bag is crocheted with medium weight acrylic yarn.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Measurements:
Diameter of bottom circle = 6”; Height = 6”
Arm length including hand = 4”; Leg length including to tip of foot = 6 ½”
Crochet Pumpkin Bag Supplies:
Red Heart Super Saver (100% acrylic; 364 yards [333 meters]/198 grams)
1 skein of each: 256 Carrot, 368 Paddy Green, 3950 Charcoal, 316 Soft White
Crochet hook: H/8 (5.0 mm)
Jumbo tapestry needle
2 safety eyes (15mm)
Notes:
This pattern is worked from the bottom up.
Do not join any round with a sl st unless otherwise instructed.
Use a stitch marker to keep track of first st in each round and move to next first st as you go
When changing colors for arms and legs, change color as complete last stitch of previous row and carry yarn along edge of work.
For placement of all body parts use photo as a guide.

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Adjustable Ring-Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through lp with hk; work stitches into loop and then pull yarn tail to tighten and close up center hole

Back Loop Only = insert hk through back loop of each stitch

Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) = Insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk
2dc CL (2 double crochet cluster) = (YO, insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps) 2x; YO, pull through all 3 lps on hook.
Join with sc (join with single crochet): With slip knot on hk, insert hk into st; YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through both lps on hk

3 dc around post of previous dc = Work a regular dc but insert hk around post of previously made dc (see photos below)
Back bar of Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into st, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
Sc (single crochet) = Insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk
Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook
Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
Tr (treble crochet) = YO twice, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times
Ch = chain; Sp = space; Hk = hook; Lp = loop; Sk = skip; YO = yarn over
Instructions for the Pumpkin Treat Bag:
(All Special Stitches are in bold and italicized text and defined above)
Pumpkin Base:
Rnd 1: With Carrot work 6 sc in an adjustable ring.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts) around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts) around. (36 sc)
Rnd 7: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts) around. (42 sc)
Rnd 8: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts) around. (48 sc)
Rnd 9: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 7 sts) around. (54 sc)
Rnd 10: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 8 sts) around. (60 sc)
Rnd 11: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 9 sts) around. (66 sc)
Rnd 12: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 10 sts) around. (72 sc)
Rnd 13: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 11 sts) around. (78 sc)
Rnd 14: Working in the back loop only, (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 12 sts)around. (84 sc)
Rnds 15 – 18: Now working through both loops, sc in each st around.
Rnd 19: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 13 sts) around. (90 sc)
Rnds 20 – 25: Repeat Rnd 15
Rnd 26: (Sc in next 10 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts) around ending with sc in remaining 6 sts (83 sts)
Rnd 27: Repeat Rnd 15
Rnd 28: (Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts) around ending with sc in last 11 sts. (77 sc)
Rnd 29: Repeat Rnd 15
Rnd 30: (Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts) around ending with sc in last 4 sts. (71 sc)
Rnd 31: Repeat Rnd 15
Rnd 32: (Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts) around ending with sc in last 11 sts. (66 sc)
Rnds 33 – 38: Repeat Rnd 15
Rnd 39: (Sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts) around ending with sc in last 3 sts. (59 sc) Fasten off.
Leaf Edging:
The white arrow is pointing to the dc completed just before the ch 2 – You will work the next 3 dcs around the post of this dc – Notice also that the Wrong Side of the project is facing (or the inside of the bag)
Here you see the 3 dcs completed around the post of the dc
Rnd 1: With Paddy Green and Wrong Side (which is also inside of bag) facing, join with sc in any sc on back side of top edge (Rnd 39); (sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, 3 dc around post of previous dc, sc in next st) around ending with sl st in 1st sc. Fasten off.
**Tip = You may need to sk just one st or 3 sts for last ‘leaf’ to fit in nicely
Flip Round 1 of the Leaf Edging over the side of the bag and let it lay on the Right Side; Then work another round of sc right over the Round 1 stitches as shown above
Rnd 2: With Right Side (outside of bag) facing , join with sc in any skipped st along the back side from previous round; sc in each st around – work in EVERY st, those used and unused – simply work around the sts that there from Rnd 1 of Leaf Edging; sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off.
Handles – Make 2:
With Charcoal ch 55
Row 1: Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (54 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.
Arms – Make 2:
With Charcoal ch 8
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (7 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (Change to Carrot)
Rows 3-10: Repeat Row 2 alternating colors every 2 rows
Fasten off.
Legs – Make 2:
Work as for Arms but start with Carrot and do not fasten off after Row 10.
Row 11 & 12: Repeat Row 2 with Gray
Row 13 & 14: Repeat Row 2 with Carrot. Fasten off.
Hands – Make 2:
Rnd 1: With Carrot work 6 sc in an adjustable ring
Rnd 2: Sc in each st around.
Rnds 3-4: Repeat Rnd 2
Rnd 5: Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook (to make thumb); sc in each st around.
Rnd 6: Sk the ‘thumb’; (sc in next st, sc in next st) 3x; Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.
Feet – Make 2:
With Charcoal work as for Hand for Rnds 1-4 but do not fasten off.
Rnd 5: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 6: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) 3x. (9sc)
Rnd 7: Sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts.
Rnd 8: Sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in next st, sc in remaining 3 sts around.
Eyes – Make 2:
With Soft White work 12 hdc in an adjustable ring; join with sl st. Fasten off.
Nose:
With Charcoal ch 6
Row 1: Work 2dcCL in 5th and 6th ch from hook. Fasten off.
Edging:
Work sl st edging down side of rows to point of nose and then up the other side of rows. Fasten off.
Finishing/Assembly:
Using yarn needle and matching yarn throughout, secure handles to top inside of bag.
Insert plastic safety eyes through center of white eye circles and insert through bag – Lock on eyes with included safety ring.
Sew on nose.
Using yarn needle and Charcoal, embroider mouth below nose.
Roll up all arm and leg pieces and sew up so form tubes – use matching yarn for each row of color.
Sew on hands and feet to ends of tubes.
Sew other ends of tubes to side and bottom of bag
