Easy and Fun Plarn Ball

If you’ve visited this blog before you know that I enjoy crocheting with plarn (yarn made out of recycled plastic bags) for various projects such as the Giant Plarn Mandala and the Recycled Rainbow Garden Kneeler. This Plarn Ball project was a lot of fun like the others and I taught my daughters how to make it so the fun was doubled! You can see a video of all the action here.

It is a simple pattern and great for beginners. Kids will love playing with this ball indoors and out. Don’t you think it would make a great stocking stuffer?

Skill Level: Easy

Measurements: Ball is 13-15inches around (total circumference)

Plastic bags (about 10) cut up into plarn – Watch this video to learn how to do this and a fun bonus, you’ll see my daughters making this project with me!

(Note: We also used recycled plastic tablecloths cut in strips and rolled up into yarn-like balls – these are thinner strips than the traditional “plarn” so if you make a whole ball with this type of plarn, your ball will turn out smaller – see various examples in this post)

N/10mm plastic crochet hook – This specific hook by Clover is the BEST hook to use for crocheting with plarn. The smooth shape of the hook end and the soft & smooth plastic form makes for the perfect hook to crochet with plarn which can sometimes be ‘grabby’ and ‘stiff’. You can purchase one here

Extra plastic bags or remnants (bag handles) for stuffing

Stitch marker or safety pin

Yarn needle (Large eye)

Special Stitches:

Sc2tog (Single Crochet 2 Together) = Insert hook into front loop of next st; insert hook into front loop of stitch after that; YO, pull through both front loops; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Fun Variations:

One of my daughter’s changed colors every round and she got this great rainbow effect.

Another ball we made with just one row in a contrasting color. (This color change is shown in a how-to video here)

Another one of my daughters used 3 colors held together at the same time – I really like how this turned out.
