Mandala Toddler Mat

Over a year ago I saw the Bernat Blanket yarn for sale in Joann’s – I loved how the yarn was wound and packaged.   These 4 colors were combined into a “Stripes” yarn that had long color changes.  I thought these colors looked great together in this order and quickly got to creating this mandala project.  Later I found the same colors packaged separately (see below).  I love how it turned out.

Have you touched the Bernat Blanket yarn? It is super soft and chunky – perfect for blankets and mats (or rugs) like this one. By using a large hook and tall stitches, this mat works up in no time and adds a colorful and cheerful accessory to a toddler’s room.

This would also look cute in a college dorm room or on a back porch adding color and cheer to those spaces, too. Read on below to see how to make one of your own!

  1. I am experimenting AND started a new one with one less petal. This seems to be working. I started with 10 chains and 9 5-ch spaces which leads to 5 petals in rows 3 & 4. I will keep going this way and hope it works out for me.
I am open to suggestions from you as well.

  2. Hello again, Jennifer,
    2 things:
    1. I tried repeating row 9-13 to make the bulky 5 yarn version larger and it gets too large with row 9. So it ruffles …. so I stopped.
    2. I started another with bulky 6 – the Bernat Blanket yarn – and I got to the last 2 rows and noticed the circle is too large also – so it ruffles pretty much starting at/after row 4. I didn’t check this and got half way through the last row. …. So I stopped.
I’m not sure what to do with each project because neither will lay flat unless I unravel several rows and find a way to make the pattern smaller.
Do you have suggestions? Have you heard this from others?
I also tried to communicate with you via a Facebook comment yet did not get a response so I came back to this method.
    In appreciation,
    Linda

    1. Hi Linda –
I am sorry you are having trouble with this pattern and keeping your circle flat. I have crocheted this pattern several times with a variety of yarns and it does work out. Part of it could be that your tension is looser than mine. If you send me a photo of both of your projects, I would be happy to look at them and see if I can help you fix the mandalas. Please email me: [email protected] and I will do my best to respond quickly.

  3. HELP again!
Round 13: Ch 1, sc in current space; {sk next 2 sts; [(dc, ch 1) 4 times; dc] all in next st, sk next 2 sts; sc in space between 2 sts just skipped and next st} around ending with sl st in 1st sc. Fasten off Red. (36 dc-shells)
    PLEASE explain this part:
sc in space between 2 sts just skipped and next st
Diagrams or pictures would help me. I AM a fairly advanced, yet have been confused a few times with these directions.
    Thank you!!!

    1. Okay – no problem to help with this step.
In crochet when we skip stitches we usually work into the very next st (after the skipped sts) but this time after skipping 2 sts, I am having you work into the very next “space” which is before the next st (which is a dc) and just after the stitches you just skipped.
Hope this helps – if you are still not sure what I mean, I will try to email you a quick sketch/photo. Happy crocheting!

  4. I appreciated your fast reply on the other question.
Do you have any suggestions for ways to make larger versions? I expect to explore this because I’m using bulky 5 and would like more rows.
This is a fun project and I’m looking forward to the completion! I’m using a new yarn from Michael’s called Eco-Cozy Ecodouillet bulky 5. Once finished I will do another with Bernat Blanket bulky 6! I will look for ways to post photos! Much appreciation for your pattern making!

    1. Hello again 🙂 – Glad you are enjoying this project. To make this project larger, you can not do Rounds 14 & 15 and instead keep repeating Rounds 9 to 13. You might need to figure out how to work into Round 13 with Round 9’s directions but Round 8 and Round 13 are very similar in how they look at completion. Of course, your stitch count will need to increase as you get larger to keep the mandala flat. 🙂

    1. Hi! Yes, you are correct. After completing Round 5, you will have a total of 12 6dc groups and 6 dc spread out in between them (one every two 6dc groups). I will add this detail to the pattern. Thank you for trying out this pattern and leaving a comment! 🙂
