Over a year ago I saw the Bernat Blanket yarn for sale in Joann’s – I loved how the yarn was wound and packaged.   These 4 colors were combined into a “Stripes” yarn that had long color changes.  I thought these colors looked great together in this order and quickly got to creating this mandala project.  Later I found the same colors packaged separately (see below).  I love how it turned out.

Have you touched the Bernat Blanket yarn? It is super soft and chunky – perfect for blankets and mats (or rugs) like this one. By using a large hook and tall stitches, this mat works up in no time and adds a colorful and cheerful accessory to a toddler’s room.

This would also look cute in a college dorm room or on a back porch adding color and cheer to those spaces, too. Read on below to see how to make one of your own!

Crochet Hook, Size L/8.0mm by Clover

Large Eye Yarn Needle

Abbreviations

Ch – chain

Sl st – slip stitch

Sc – single crochet

Dc – double crochet

Tr – treble crochet

Sp – space

Shell – several sts worked in same st

Lp – loop

Special Stitches:

Beg. 5 dc-CL = Ch 2, [YO, insert hook into next st, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hook] 4 times; YO, pull through all 5 lps on hook

5 dc-CL = [YO, insert hook into next st, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hook] 5 times; YO, pull through all 6 lps on hook

V-st-3 = (dc, ch 3, dc) all in st indicated

V-st-2 = (dc, ch 2, dc) all in st indicated

Beg. 4 tr-CL = Ch 3, [YO twice, insert hook into next st, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hook) twice] 3 times; YO, pull through all 4 lps on hook

4 tr-CL = [YO twice, insert hook into next st, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hook) twice] 4 times; YO, pull through all 5 lps on hook

Instructions:

(All stitches in bold red type can be found in above list with explanation of how to do each one)

With Yellow, ch 8 – join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1:  Ch 4, (dc, ch 1) 11 times in ring; join with sl st to 3^rd ch of starting ch-4. (12 dc, 12 ch-1 sps)

Round 2:  Sl st into next ch-1 sp, (ch 5, sl st in next ch-1 sp) around ending with ch-2, dc in 1^st sl st of round. (12 ch-5 sps)

Round 3:  Ch 3, 4 dc in same sp; (ch 3, sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, 5 dc in next ch-5 sp) around ending with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (6 5-dc groups and 12 ch-3 sps)

Round 4:  Beg. 5-dc CL over next 4 sts, (ch 5, dc in each of next 2 ch-3 sps, ch 5, 5dc-CL over next 5 dcs) around ending with ch5, dc in each of next 2 ch-3 sps, ch 5, sl st in top of 1^st cluster. Fasten off Yellow.

Round 5:  Join Blue with sl st in any ch-5 sp (immediately to left of a petal); ch 3, 5 dc in same sp, [dc in between next 2 dcs, (6 dc in next ch-5 sp) 2 times] around ending with 6 dcs in last ch-5 sp; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (12 6-dc groups and 6 dcs which are spaced out – one after every two 6dc groups)

Round 6:  Ch 1, sc in sp just to Right of sl st just made (between last dc and starting ch-3); [ch 2, V-st-3 in space between next 3^rd and 4^th dc, ch 2, sk next 3 dcs, sc in sp between next 3^rd and 4^th dc] around ending with sl st in starting sc. Fasten off Blue. (12 V-sts)

Round 7:  Join Red with sl st in any ch-3 space (center of V-st); ch 4, (dc, ch 1) 5 times in same sp, [hdc in next sc, (ch 1, dc) 6 times in next ch-3 sp, ch 1] around ending with sl st to 3^rd ch of starting ch-3. Fasten off Red. (12 dc shells)

Round 8:  Join Orange with sl st in any hdc, ch 5, (tr, ch 1) 4 times in same st, [sc in space between 3^rd and 4^th dc (of next dc-shell), (ch 1, tr) 5 times in next hdc] around ending with ch 1, sc in space between last 3^rd and 4^th dc, ch 1, sl st in 4^th ch of starting ch-5. Fasten off Orange. (12 tr shells)

Round 9:  Join Yellow with sc in center tr of any shell, [ch 4, V-st-2 in next sc, ch 4, sc in center tr of next shell] around ending with sl st to 1^st sc. (12 V-st-2’s)

Round 10:  Sl st into next ch-4 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, (3 dc in next V-st, [4 dc in next ch-4 sp] 2 times) around ending with 4 dc in last ch-4 sp, sl st in top of starting ch-3. Fasten off Yellow. (132 dcs)

Round 11:  Join Blue with sl st in top of starting ch-3 from Round 10; Beg. 4 tr-CL over next 4 sts; (ch 6, 4tr-CL over next 3 sts with middle 2 legs of cluster worked into center dc, ch 6, 4tr-CL over next 4 sts, ch 6, 4 tr-CL over next 4 sts) around ending with ch 6, sl st in top of 1^st cluster. Fasten off Blue. (36 tr-clusters)

Round 12:  Join Red with sl st in any ch-6 sp; ch 3, 4 dc in same sp; 5 dc in each ch-6 sp around ending with a sl st in starting ch-3.

Round 13:  Ch 1, sc in current space; {sk next 2 sts; [(dc, ch 1) 4 times; dc] all in next st, sk next 2 sts; sc in space between 2 sts just skipped and next st} around ending with sl st in 1^st sc. Fasten off Red. (36 dc-shells)

Round 14:  Join Orange with sl st in sc between any 2 shells; ch 6, (sc in center dc of next shell, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3) around ending with sl st in 3^rd ch of starting ch-6. (72 ch-3 sps)

Round 15:  Ch 4, [(dc, ch 1) 2 times; dc] in same st; {sk next ch-3 sp, sc in next sc, sk next ch-3 sp; [(dc, ch1) 3 times; dc] in next dc} around. Fasten off Orange. (36 dc-shells)

Using large eye yarn needle, weave in all ends.

Tada! A cute little mat for a cute little toddler.

(This would also work great in any room as a circular rug – the super soft yarn feels great on your toes!)
