Granny Square Heart Garland
The Granny Square Heart Garland is a colorful and easy crochet project that can be hung as a decoration any time of year! I created this garland several years ago when I was designing a large Yarn Bomb project for the Crochet Guild of America’s annual conference. We decorated the hotel with all shapes and sizes of crocheted motifs and projects to add to the fun atmosphere of a bunch of crocheters getting together for classes, shopping and friendship. 3 Motifs – Quick to Crochet!
This crochet garland is made up of 3 different motifs that are based on the traditional Granny Square design with their sets of 3 double crochets and many open spaces. All of the motifs are crocheted in just 4 rounds so each works up very quickly. All the motifs use basic stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet. You’ll also need to know how to do a treble crochet and double treble crochet – these are just really tall stitches that help us make the curved parts of the heart motif. They work just like a double crochet but have 2 and 3 yarn overs before you start the stitch. All stitch explanations are listed below to help you be successful!
Garlands and Hearts to Decorate my Mantel!
I had so much fun with this garland project that I used it to decorate my mantel and create some other quick projects. Color Combinations – Fun to Experiment!
I decided to make all of the hearts one color and then the squares and triangles in 4 different colors including the color I used for the heart. If you look closely, you can see that these motifs have the colors in reverse order of each other. I LOVE how these colors look together and how the reverse-ordering goes together so well. But, of course, you can use whatever color combination you would like!
This past summer I was an instructor at the Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival and crocheted a few fun pieces to add to the decor around the marketplace including this Granny Square Heart Garland. I used the signature Pittsburgh Steeler colors (Yellow, Black, White and Gray) in the same color pattern. You could make your garland in sports team colors or company colors or even a loved ones favorite colors – the possibilities are endless!

Medium weight acrylic yarn – 4 different colors (small amount of each color and 1 whole skein for color used for heart motifs)
Exact Yarn I used: Big Twist by Michaels (originally by Joann’s Fabrics) in Plum (dark pink); Orchid (light purple); White; Medium Rose (pink)
Clover Mini Pom-pom Maker (35 mm)
Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
Tr (treble crochet) = YO twice, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) 3 times
Dtr (double treble crochet) = YO 3 times; insert hk into st; YO, draw up a lp; (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) 4 times
Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Notes:
Each motif is crocheted in the round
Then all motifs and pom-poms are joined together using hot glue

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above
Heart: (Make 5)
Ch 5, sl st in 1st ch to form ring;
Round 1:
Ch 3, 2 dc in ring; (ch 3, 3 dc) 3 times; ch 3; sl st in top of starting ch-3.
Round 2:
Sl st in each of next 2 dc and in next ch-3 sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 sp; [ch 1, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in each ch-3 sp around; ch 1; sl st to starting ch-3.
Round 3 (2 humps of the heart):
Sl st across next 2 dc and in next ch-3 sp; [(tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, dtr, ch 1, dtr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr) in next ch-1 sp; sc in next ch-3 sp] 2 times.
Round 4: (Scallop edging)
4 dc in same ch-3 sp (that just put sc in at end of Round 3); sl st in next center dc, 4 dc in next ch-1 sp; sl st in next center dc; 6 dc in next ch-3 sp (at bottom point of heart); sl st in next center dc; 4 dc in next ch-1 sp; sl st in next center dc; 4 dc in next ch-3 sp (where put sl st at beginning of Round 3); sl st in next tr; *(4 dc in next ch-1 sp, sl st in next ch-1 sp) 2 times; 4 dc in next ch-1 sp; sl st in next sc;* Repeat * to *. Fasten off.
Square: (Make 2)
Ch 5, sl st in 1st ch to form ring;
Round 1:
Ch 3, 2 dc in ring; (ch 3, 3 dc) 3 times; ch 3; sl st in top of starting ch-3. Fasten off.
Round 2:
Join with sl st in any ch-3 sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 sp; [ch 1, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in each ch-3 sp around; ch 1; sl st to top of starting ch-3. Fasten off.
Round 3:
Join with sl st in any ch-3 sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 sp; [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times; ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. Fasten off.
Round 4:
Join with sl st to center dc of 3-dc group to right of any ch-3 sp; (If you are left handed, you will join with sl st to center dc of 3-dc group to left of any ch-3 sp); [6 dc in next ch-3 sp; (sl st in next center dc; 4 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times; sl st in next center dc] 4 times ending with sl st in starting sl st. Triangle: (Make 2)
Ch 5, sl st in 1st ch to form ring;
Round 1:
Ch 3, 2 dc in ring; (ch 4, 3 dc in ring) 2 times; Ch 4; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. Fasten off.
Round 2:
Join with sl st in any ch-4 sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-4 sp; [ch 2, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-4 sp] 2 times; ch 2; sl st to top of starting ch-3. Fasten off.
Round 3:
Join with sl st in any ch-3 sp; (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp; [ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp; ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 2 times; ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st to top of starting ch-3. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends
Optional: Wet block all motifs and let dry completely

Finishing & Assembly:
Use photos as a guide for order of motifs in garland
Attaching each pom-pom:
Cut length of yarn matching pom-poms about 8” long
Using yarn needle thread yarn length through center of pom-pom
Hot glue yarn ends to Wrong Side of motifs making sure pom-pom edges touch both sides of motifs; Trim off excess yarn length
Hanging Loops:
Cut a 10” length of yarn matching pom-poms
Fold in half and make a double knot about 1-2” from loop end
Thread ends of yarn through center of pom-pom so knot inside pom-pom
Glue ends to Wrong Side of last heart and trim off excess
Tada! Your Granny Square Heart Garland is Complete!
