Colorida Hammock Blanket

The idea for this blanket started in my mind several years ago while I was laying on my hammock.  I love to lay on my hammock in the shade in my backyard on a summer afternoon.  We live near some woods that is full of wildlife. It is very relaxing to lay down while looking up at the trees and listen to the birds sing.  My first hammock was made out of knotted rope and it was not that comfortable.  (Since then my husband bought me a quilted hammock that is very comfortable.) So, I thought that making a soft blanket out of yarn would be a comfort solution for the knotted hammocks.  And since a hammock is all about ‘hanging around’ I thought it would be a perfect blanket to use a large scalloped edging that hangs down along both sides.

When it came time to choose which colors I wanted to use, I perused hundreds of images of Mexican blankets. I love how they are bright and colorful.  They have thick and thin stripes of vibrant colors and some neutral colors. I decided on a deep red, hot pink, light tan and 2 shades each of blue and green.  The Spanish word, “Colorida”, means colorful and seems to fit this blanket just right.

I know in many parts of the world the summer is long gone and the days are getting too cold to lay outside but I just had to share this hammock blanket with you now because I worked hard on it all summer long!  I love how it turned out.  You can see that my little dachshund, Sadie, loves it, too.

(Oh, and if you don’t have a hammock or want to brighten any bedroom,  this size blanket fits great on a twin bed (see photo below) and can easily be made wider for other size beds just by repeating rows 1 to 24 more times until you get the size you want.)

Skill Level:  Confident Beginner

Measurements:  

55” wide x 88” long; Edging = 10”

Each set of stripes (Rows 1 – 24) = 11 ½”

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn– (7 oz/198 g/364 yds/333m)

2 skeins each color:

• Buff (0334)
• Burgundy (0376)
• Royal (0385)
• Turqua (0512)
• Shocking Pink (0718)
• Paddy Green (0368)
• Spring Green (0672)

K/6.5mm hook

Special Stitches and Abbreviations

Back bar of the chain=insert hook into back bump of chain

Mark Right Side = Pin a stitch marker on the surface of the Right Side

Join with sc = Put slip knot on hook of new color and insert hook into st indicated; complete sc as usual

Join with dc = Put slip knot on hook of new color, YO and insert hook into st indicated; complete dc as usual

2 tr CL (2 treble cluster) = YO twice, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice; YO twice, insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Join with hdc = Put slip knot of new color on hook; YO, insert hook into st indicated and complete hdc as usual

Pom-pom stitch =  (YO, insert hook into ch indicated, YO, draw up a loop about ½” long) 5 times; YO, pull through all 11 loops on hook, ch 1, fold loops (stitch) in half and sl st into same chain as before (this closes up the loops and gives the stitch a pom-pom look)

Every time do a Buff sc row, you will have the Right Side facing

Every time you start a new color (except Buff), you will have the Wrong Side facing

Instructions

With Burgundy ch 252

Row 1:  Working in the back bar of the ch, dc in 4^th ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (250 dcs – Turning ch counts as a dc)

Row 2 (Right Side): Ch 3, working in back loop only, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

**Mark this side (Row 2) with a stitch  marker so you know it is the Right Side**

Row 3: Ch 3, working in both loops now, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 4 (Right Side): Repeat Row 2. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 5: With Right Side facing, join Buff with sc to top of starting ch-3 of previous row; sc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 6: With Wrong Side facing and Royal, join with dc in 1^st sc; dc in each st across. Turn

Row 7:  Ch 3, working in the back loops only, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 8:  Ch 3, working in both loops, dc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 9 (Right Side): With Right Side facing and Buff, join with a sc in 1^st dc of previous row; sc in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 10:  With Wrong Side facing and Turqua, join with a dc in 1^st sc of previous row; dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 11:  Ch 3, working in back loop only, dc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 12: With Buff join with a sc in top of ch-3 of previous row; sc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 13:  With Wrong Side facing and Shocking Pink, join with a dc in 1^st sc of previous row; dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 14:  Ch 3, working in the back loops only, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 15:  Ch 3, now working in both loops, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 16 (Right Side):  Repeat Row 14. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 17: With Right Side facing, join Buff with sc to top of ch-3 in previous row; sc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 18: With Wrong Side facing and Paddy Green, join with a dc in 1^st sc of previous row; dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 19:  Ch 3, working in the back loops only, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 20 (Wrong Side):  Ch 3, working in both loops, dc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 21(Right Side): Join Buff with sc in 1^st dc of previous row; sc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 22: With Wrong Side facing and Spring Green, join with a dc in 1^st sc of previous row; dc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Row 23:  Ch 3, working in back loops only, dc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 24:  Join Buff with sc in 1^st st of previous row, sc in next st and in each st across. Fasten off. Turn.

Rows 25-72: Repeat Rows 1-24  three more times

(Note: When working Row 1 again, start row by joining Burgundy with a dc in 1^st st of previous row; then dc in next st and in each st across. Turn)

Rows 73 to 77: Repeat Rows 1 (as noted above) to 5 one more time – do not fasten off Buff. Turn.

Edging: (11 rows)

Row 1: With Wrong Side facing, ch 4, sk next st, (dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st) across up to last 2 sts; dc in last 2 sts. Turn. (122 ch-1 sps)

Row 2 (Right Side):  Ch 5, (dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) across; dc in last st. Fasten off. Do not turn. (121 ch-1 sps)

Row 3: With Right Side facing and Burgundy, join with a sc in 1^st st; (sk next ch-1 sp, sk next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, 7 tr in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, sk next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc) across; leave turning chain unworked. Fasten off.  Do not turn. ( 30 – 7-tr shells)

Row 4:  With Right Side facing and Buff, join with sc in 1^st sc; (ch 10, sk next shell, sc in next sc) across. Turn. ( 30 ch-10 sps)

Row 5:  Ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 2, sc in same sp, ch 2, dc in next sc; (ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, sc in same sp, ch 2, dc in next sc) across; Turn. (90 ch-2 sps)

Row 6:  Ch 1, sc in 1^st st and in next sp; (ch 4, sc in next sp) across. Fasten off. D not turn. (91 ch-4 sps)

**For remaining rows do not turn and always work with Right Side facing**

Row 7: With Right Side facing, join Turqua with sc in 1^st st; (ch 4, sc in next sp) 3 times; {12 tr in next ch-4 sp, sc in next ch-4 sp, (ch 4, sc in next sp) 4 times} across. Fasten off. (15 12-tr shells)

Row 8: With Royal join with sc in 1^st sp; [ch 3, (2 tr CL over next 2 trs, ch 5)6 times; ch 3, sk next ch-4 sp, sc in next sp, ch 4, sc in next sp, sk next sp] across. Fasten off.

Row 9: With Spring Green join with sc in 1^st st; [(2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in each of next 5 ch-5 sps, ch 3, sk next cluster and next ch-3 sp, sc in next ch-4 sp, ch 3, sk next ch-3 sp and next cluster] across. Fasten off.

Row 10:  With Paddy Green join with hdc in first ch-5 sp; (2 hdc, ch 3, 3 hdc) in same sp; (3 hdc, ch 5, 3 hdc) in each of next 3 ch-5 sps; 6 sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in next sc, ch 1; {6 sc in next ch-5 sp, (3 hdc, ch 3, 3 hdc) in each of next 3 ch-5 sps, 6 sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 1, sc in next sc, ch 1} across. Fasten off.

Row 11: With Shocking Pink join with sc in 1^st ch-3 sp; [(ch 7, work Pom-pom stitch in 2^nd ch from hook, ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp) 3 times; ch 7, work Pom-pom stitch in 2^nd ch from hook, ch 5, sk next 2 scs, sc in next st, sk next 3 scs, ch 1, sc, ch 1 and 3 scs, sc in next st,  ch 7, sc in next ch-3 sp,  (ch 7, work Pom-pom stitch in 2^nd ch from hook, ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp) 2 times; ch 7, sk next 3 hdcs, 2 scs, sc in next st, sk next 3 scs, sk next ch-1, sk next sc, sk next ch-1, sk next 3 scs, sc in next st] across. Fasten off.

Edging on other side:

Row 1: With Right Side facing and Buff, join with sc in 1st st of Row 1 (of main part of blanket); sc in next st and in each st across. Turn.

Repeat Rows 1-11 for Edging

Tabs (Optional): Make 6 to 8

With Burgundy ch 33; Working in the back bar of the chain, dc in 4^th ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off.

Using yarn needle and matching yarn, sew center of each tab evenly spaced along short ends of blanket-  3 to 4 each side.  Now use tabs to tie blanket in place on hammock.
