Celtic Christmas Bag Charm

The Celtic Christmas Bag Charm is a fun and unique project that can be made into a snowflake or star! Bag charms are very popular right now and I love how they add so much character and whimsy to a regular handbag, tote bag or backpack. This crochet bag charm project works up quickly and uses only basic crochet stitches and a small amount of Size 3 cotton crochet thread.

Stitches Used in the Celtic Christmas Bag Charm

To make the Celtic Christmas Bag Charm you’ll need to know how to do only basic stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet – that’s it! You’ll use a small amount of Size 3 cotton crochet thread and a size 2.75mm crochet hook.

2 colors of Size 3 cotton crochet thread

(I used Aunt Lydia’s Fashion 3 thread in White and DMC metallic perle thread in Silver for the snowflake; For the star versions I used LionBrand’s 24/7 cotton in the DK weight in Lemon Drop and DMC metallic perle thread in gold (yellow and gold star) and I used New Smoking in gold and Aunt Lydia’s Natural/Gold thread for the all gold star)

2.75mm crochet hook

4 stitch markers

10-15 straight sewing pins

Corkboard 5” x 5” (or similar)

Fabric stiffener

Yarn needle

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Bag Clip or ornament hook

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

Back Loop Only = Insert hk only into the back lp at the top of the stitch

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Notes:

First 3 cords are crocheted

Then these cords are woven into a Celtic Knot

To make the snowflake version stitches are added around the outside edge

Lastly the project is stiffened and a clip or chain-length is added

Instructions for the Celtic Christmas Bag Charm by Jennifer E Ryan:

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Cord – Make 3:

Each cord is approximately 5 3/4″ long x 7/16″ wide

Stitches are written in a list format so it is easier to keep your place in the pattern 🙂

Ch 41

Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2^nd ch and in each of next 5 chs;

Hdc in next ch;

(dc, ch 1, sl st in top of dc just made, dc) in next ch – Point made (Mark ch-1 sp with a stitch marker and mark chain at bottom of stitch with stitch marker);

Hdc in next ch;

Sc in each of next 17 chs;

Hdc in next ch;

(dc, ch 1, sl st in top of dc just made, dc) in next ch – Point made (Mark ch-1 sp with stitch marker and mark chain at bottom of stitch with stitch marker);

Hdc in next ch;

Sc in each of next 11 chs. Fasten off.

Cord Edging:

The stitch markers indicate where to work either a ch-1 or a skip – see below for details

Working in the back loop only, join with sl st in 1^st st of cord; sl st in each st across; ch 1, sl st in side of last st; ch 1, continuing to work in back loops only, sl st in each st across;

**At first 2 stitch markers (marking the ch-1 sps), work: sl st in ch-1 sp, ch 1

**At second 2 stitch markers (that are marking the bottom of the stitches), work: sk st marked by stitch marker

Fasten off.

Weaving Knot:

First sew cord ends together for 2 of the cords (Cords 1 & 2)- do not sew 3rd cord (Cord 3)

Place diagram on corkboard and hold in place with pins

**You can download a FREE copy of the diagram for both Right and Left Handers in the supply list above**

Lay Cord 1 down on red path and pin in place

Lay Cord 2 down on green path – it will sit on top of Cord 1 – and pin in place

Pin beginning of Cord 3 on black asterisk on diagram (which will be under Cord 1)

Continue to lay Cord 3 along the white path making sure to correctly pass either over or under (This over/under pattern will alternate for this cord)

You may want to thread the yarn tails onto a yarn needle to help you weave the cords under and over

Pin crossings across and remove knot from board

On Wrong Side and with yarn needle sew ends together of Cord 3

With Right Side facing make sure all cord ends are hidden under other cords and hot glue crossings in place

Finishing:

For Snowflake Edging:

Working in loops BEHIND sl st edging; join with sl st at arrow on Diagram; *ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hk; sl st in same st; ch 5; sl st at next point; [ch 3, sl st in 3^rd ch from hk] 3 times; sl st in 1^st sl st (at base of 1st ch-3 picot of this group); sl st in point; ch 5 *

Note: A ch-3 picot is made by working this: (ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hk)

Repeat from * to * around ending with sl st in 1^st sl st of round; Fasten off.

For Chain-Length Hanger:

Ch 30-40 – fasten off.

Use yarn tails to tie into a loop and sew to point of star/snowflake on Wrong Side – weave in ends.

For Bag Clip Hanger:

Using length of yarn (or yarn tails) sew on bag clip at a point – weave in ends.

Stiffening:

Lay project Right Side down on aluminum foil (or plastic wrap) on top of corkboard

Apply stiffener to Wrong Side of project

Pin points in place

Let dry completely

Apply another coat of stiffener for more stability
