Textured Crochet Dishcloth

The Textured Crochet Dishcloth is easy to make and results in a double-thickness so you can really scrub those dishes well! This dishcloth is simple to crochet because it uses just one stitch and a simple variation of it. You’ll want to make this with cotton yarn so it washes well and is gentle on your pots, pans and dishes.

A Double-Thickness Makes for a Great Dishcloth!

I think crocheted dishcloths are great in the kitchen and as a washcloth in the shower but sometimes once wet they become thin and stretched out. Not the case for this dishcloth! I include a simple technique in the FREE pattern below that yields a double-thickness for this project without sewing or making 2 squares. It’s easy and fun to do!

Stitches Used in the Textured Crochet Dishcloth

To create this Textured Crochet Dishcloth you need to know how to do the chain, slip stitch and half double crochet stitch – that’s it! The excellent texture comes from working the stitches in different areas. The half double crochet stitch is one of the most versatile stitches in crochet. I love how you can make these stitches very quickly and they are just the right height and thickness for a wide variety of projects.

Cotton dishcloth yarn (1 ball)

(I used Peaches & Crème Original in Seabreeze)

I/5.5mm Clover crochet hook

1 stitch marker

Jumbo Tapestry Needle by Clover

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Here is a photo of the back side of a row of hdc – the white arrows are pointing to the back bar loop which is just below the top loop

Back bar of Hdc (Back bar of the Half Double Crochet) = Look closely at a half double crochet stitch – on the back side you will see that there is a long diagonal “bar” or loop just under the top 2 loops; This is the loop you will insert your hook into (see photo above)

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Notes:

Project is worked in the round

A stitch marker is used to mark the loop that each slip stitch makes at the end of every round – this way you will not mistake it for an extra stitch and keep the correct stitch count

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Ch 26

Here is the first half of Round 1 completed

Round 1 (Right Side):

Hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Do not turn –

Now working in other side of ch (as shown in photo above), hdc in each ch across; join with sl st to 1^st hdc. (48 hdc – 24 across each side)

**Working on both sides of the chain creates the double-thickness very easily and seamlessly**

Here is Round 1 both sides completed (without the ending slip stitch)

**When working the joining sl st, mark sl st with stitch marker – you will skip this loop/stitch every round and then mark the newest sl st with the stitch marker

In photo above you can see the slip stitch from the previous round marked with the stitch marker, the ch 1 that starts every round and the first stitch of the current round shown with a white arrow**

Round 2:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in next 2 sts; hdc in back bar of hdc of next 3 sts; (hdc in next 3 sts, hdc in back bar of hdc of next 3 sts) around; sl st to 1^st hdc of round placing stitch marker in loop created by sl st.(4 3-hdc sets of each kind on each side of cloth)

Here you can see how the stitches start to form the double-thickness and it looks like a pocket

Round 3:

Ch 1, hdc in back bar of hdc in same st and in next 2 sts; hdc in next 3 sts; (hdc in back bar of hdc of next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts) around; sl st to 1^st hdc of round making sure to skip loop marked with stitch marker. Remove stitch marker from previous round and place in sl st loop just made.

Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until a square (approximately 7” long and 19 total rows)

Fasten off with long tail for assembly

Finishing:

With tapestry needle and long yarn tail sew up top opening in dishcloth

Weave in ends
