Crochet Heart Earrings

The Crochet Heart Earrings are quick and easy to make. They use a very small amount of Size 10 cotton crochet thread and optional jewelry charms. There are many ways to crochet a heart and this project has you making just 2 rows with tall stitches! I was able to crochet each of these hearts in less than 5 minutes! Plus, they are very lightweight which makes for the perfect earring design. 🙂 You can decide to make these earrings with or without the charms – it’s up to you!

Why I Created the Crochet Heart Earrings

Recently my dear Uncle Leonard passed away. He loved all animals especially elephants. I wanted to wear something to his memorial service to honor and remember him so I crocheted little hearts and added a small elephant charm to them to wear as earrings. It was a very small gesture but meant a lot to me and I will always think of him when I see an elephant. After the service I realized that other people might want to make their own heart earrings with other charms to honor someone they lost or to give as a personalized gift. So, I reworked the heart pattern to come out larger and cleaner and experimented with a variety of jewelry charms that I found in my stash. I love how each person has unique things that they love and are interested in which help make them special and appreciated.

Stitches Used in this Crochet Earring Project

The Crochet Heart Earrings are crocheted with just a few stitches. You will need to know how to do the chain, slip stitch and treble crochet – that’s it! The treble crochet is a tall stitch that is used often in thread projects. It is very similar to the double crochet stitch. You can read an explanation of how to do the stitch below. Remember, you can always practice this pattern with thicker yarn and a larger hook before you try it with the thin thread and tiny hook. 🙂

Size 10 cotton crochet thread (very small amount)

1.25mm hook (or 1.5mm hook) – These Clover hooks have silicone handles which make them much easier and more comfortable to use

2 earring wires

2 jump rings (8 mm)

Jewelry pliers

Embroidery needle

Charms

(These are the elephant charms I purchased – I love them)

Fabric stiffener and aluminum foil

Sharp scissors

Here are some variations that can be made with this project – You can attach a charm to the bottom or the center of the heart or you can make without a charm at all; The green heart has a simple ch-sp edging to make it a little larger to accommodate the larger charm

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Tr (treble crochet) = YO twice, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Notes:

Hearts are worked in rows

Charm embellishments are optional

Instructions for the Crochet Heart Earrings:

Ch 5

Row 1:

4 tr in 5^th ch from hk. Turn. (Starting ch-5 counts as 1 tr and is referred to as the “turning chain”)

Row 2 (Right Side):

Ch 3, tr in 1^st st and next st; (tr, ch 3, sl st, ch 3, tr) all in next st; tr in next st; (tr, ch 3, sl st) all in turning chain. Do not turn and do not fasten off.

Edging:

Now working along edge of rows, sl st in each of next 3 chs; (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in point; sl st along edge of rows on other side of heart up to top of Row 1. Fasten off with long tail for assembly.

Optional Lacy Edging:

(As shown for green heart above)

Join with sl st to top center of heart (between humps); (ch 4, sk next st, sl st in next st) around; At bottom point work: (sl st, ch 5, sl st) – Please note that you may not want to sk some sts and work the ch-4 sps closer together especially when going around the humps of the heart; End by sl st in 1st sl st of round; Weave in ends

Finishing and Assembly:

With needle and yarn tails and on Wrong Side of heart, sew up any gaps so heart looks more solid and even

Make sure to weave in yarn tails so one is coming out at bottom point and one is coming out at top center (between heart humps)

If you would like to add a charm on top of the heart shape, use the top yarn tail and needle to sew the charm on now – then you will use the same yarn tail to attach the earring wire

Add jump rings to earring wires and sew jump ring to Wrong Side of heart using top yarn tail and needle – Make sure that earring wire is facing the correct way so Right Side of heart hangs out from ear

Using bottom yarn tail attach charm and weave in end on Wrong Side

Place earrings Right Side down on aluminum foil and add a small amount of Fabric Stiffener to Wrong Side of earrings – press in with finger making sure to not get any on earring wire or charms; Let dry completely

(If would like heart to be more stiff, add another coat of stiffener in same manner)
