Easy Colorful Crochet Mandala

The Easy Colorful Crochet Mandala is truly an easy pattern that works up quickly with its tall stitches and many chain spaces. This project is also great as a stash-buster since you don’t need much of each color! If you look carefully at the pattern of stitches, you’ll see that this project is very similar to the Easy Shimmer Mandala (a FREE pattern that you can find here on this blog). But this easy crochet mandala is crocheted with medium weight acrylic yarn and it is added to a plastic hula hoop!

A Variety of Sizes Possible!

You can make the Easy Colorful Crochet Mandala project in a variety of sizes very easily. For my project I used a hoop that is about 27″ across but you can stop after any 2nd round of each color if your hoop is a different size and attach in the same method as explained below after Round 21. You could even make this with thread or Size 3/DK weight yarn for a smaller size. Hoops and rings come in all sorts of sizes and materials! I have used plastic hula hoops, metal rings, bamboo hoops, wooden embroidery hoops and even plastic landscape tubing. 😮

Stitches Used in the Easy Colorful Crochet Mandala Pattern

Most of the stitches used in this pattern are these basic stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet and double crochet. For one of the last rounds you will need to know how to do treble crochets – they are easy to do and are very similar to a dc – you just need to YO twice at the start of the stitch! Measurements:

25″ to 27″ across once mounted to hoop/ring

(It works best if your mandala is slightly smaller than the hoop/ring so that it stretches across the center tightly; A 2″ to 3″ difference is good)

Medium weight acrylic yarn in 8 different colors

(Red, Orange, Yellow, Lime Green, Turquoise, Royal Blue, Hot Pink, White – I used Red Heart Super Saver from my stash 🙂)

H/8/5mm hook

27″ hula hoop or steel ring

(These hoops are larger but would still work and come at a great price)

(If your hoop or ring is bigger than this measurement, don’t worry – your yarn length that you will use to attach the mandala to the hoop/ring can extend longer and everything will still look great)

Yarn needle

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice

Tr (treble crochet) = YO twice, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

Notes:

Instructions are given for the colors shown in the photos but you can change colors whenever you want

To make a different size than shown, simply end after the 2nd round of any color; Then use the chain loops that make up your last round to attach the mandala to your hoop/ring as explained in the “Finishing & Assembly Section” below 🙂

Instructions for the Easy Colorful Crochet Mandala by Jennifer E Ryan:

With Red ch 10 – sl st in 1^st ch to form a ring

Round 1: 

Ch 3, 30 dc in ring; join with sl st to 1^st dc;  (The ch-3 moves to back.) (30 dcs)

Round 2: 

Ch 1, sc in same st; (Ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in next st) around ending with ch 2, dc in 1^st sc to make last ch-5 sp.(10 ch-5 sps)

Round 3: 

Ch 1, sc in same ch-5 sp; (ch 4, sc in next ch-5 sp) around; join with sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off Red. (10 ch-4 sps)

Round 4: 

Join Orange with sl st in any ch-4 sp; ch 3 (counts as 1^st dc), 4 dc in same ch-4 sp, dc in next sc; (5 dc in next ch-4 sp, dc in next sc) around; join with sl st to beg. ch-3. (60 dcs)

Round 5:

Repeat Round 2 (20 ch-5 sps)

Round 6: 

Ch 1, sc in same ch-5 sp, (ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp) around; join with sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off Orange. (20 ch-3 sps)

Round 7: 

Join Yellow with a sl st in any sc, ch 3 (counts as 1^st dc); (4 dc in next ch-3 sp, dc in next sc) around; join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (100 dcs)

Round 8: 

Ch 1, sc in same st; (ch 5, sk next 3 dcs, sc in next st) around ending with ch 2, dc in 1^st sc to make last ch-5 sp. (25 ch-5 sps)

Round 9: 

Repeat Round 6. Fasten off Yellow. (25 ch-3 sps)

Round 10:

Join Lime Green with sl st in any sc; ch 3; (4 dc in next ch-3 sp, dc in next sc) around ending with sl st in top of starting ch-3. (125 dcs)

Round 11: 

Ch 1, sc in same st; (ch 6, sk next 4 dcs, sc in next st) around ending with ch 3, dc in 1^st sc to make last ch-6 sp. (25 ch-6 sps)

Round 12: 

Ch 1, sc in same ch-6 sp; (Ch 4, sc in next ch-6 sp) around; join with sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off Lime Green. (25 ch-4 sps)

Round 13: 

Join Turquoise with sl st in any ch-4 sp; ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, dc in next sc; (5 dc in next ch-4 sp, dc in next sc) around ending with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (150 dcs)

Round 14: 

Ch 1, sc in same st; (ch 7, sk next 5 dcs, sc in next st) around ending with ch 4, dc in 1^st sc. (25 ch-7 sps)

Round 15: 

Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 5, sc in next ch-7 sp) around ending with sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off Turquoise. (25 ch-5 sps)

Round 16: 

Join Royal Blue with sl st in any ch-5 sp; ch 3 (counts as 1^st dc), 5 dc in same ch-5 sp, dc in next sc; (6 dc in next ch-5 sp, dc in next sc) around ending with sl st in top of starting ch-3. (175 dcs)

Round 17: 

Ch 1, sc in last dc of previous round; (ch 7, sk next 6 dcs, sc in next dc) around ending with sl st in 1^st sc. (25 ch-7 sps)

Round 18: 

Ch 1, sl st in next 4 chs; ch 1, sc in same ch-7 sp; (ch 6, sc in next ch-7 sp) around ending with sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off Royal Blue. (25 ch-6 sps)

Round 19: 

Join Hot Pink with sl st in any ch-6 sp, ch 4, 7 tr in same sp; 8 tr in each ch-6 sp around; join with sl st to top of starting ch-4. Fasten off Hot Pink. (200 trs)

Round 20: 

Join White with sl st in any tr that is 1^st in a set of 8 that were just worked in the prev. round; ch 1, sc in same st; sc in each st around ending with sl st to 1^st st. (200 scs)

Round 21: 

Ch 1, sc in same st; (ch 7, sk next 3 sts, sc in next st) around ending with sl st in 1^st sc. Fasten off. (50 ch-7 sps)

Finishing and Assembly of the Easy Colorful Crochet Mandala:

With long length (45″ or more) of White yarn and yarn needle whipstitch mandala to hoop/ring by passing through every ch-sp of the last round and wrapping yarn around hoop/ring using photo as a guide

Tie tightly in a double-knot and weave in all ends on Wrong Side of mandala

Cut an 8″ piece of white and thread through hoop/ring

Tie in double-knot and use as hanger

I loved crocheting my mandala project and enjoy hanging it outside in my garden. Of course, you could hang this project inside, too. I love that the acrylic yarn works well outdoors. If your mandala gets dirty, you can undo the length of yarn holding it to the hoop/ring and toss it in the washer on delicate. (I would also put it in a mesh bag and wash it on cold).
