Celtic Crochet Pumpkin

The Celtic Crochet Pumpkin is a unique and practical fall decoration for your table! It is made with cotton yarn in shades of orange and a bright blue. The Celtic Knots are easy to weave especially with the included diagrams and the blue pumpkin base works up quickly with a double strand of yarn.

Fall Decoration and Hot Pad

This crochet pumpkin protects your tabletop from hot dishes and pots while also providing a pretty Celtic design. I love to use hot pads for a special dinner because I enjoy eating warm food served right from covered serving dishes! 🙂 I also love decorating the table for Thanksgiving with a variety of pumpkins, candles, flowers and other fall-themed decorations. This project fits right in!

Cotton Yarn Essential for Hot Pads

I used cotton yarn for my hot pad because that works best when resting something hot on top. The cotton fibers protect well and don’t melt when next to something hot (unlike other fibers like acrylic yarn). But you can use other yarn if you would like – just make sure it is Size 3/DK weight and you only use it for a decoration (and not a hot pad). The label on the yarn I used says, “Size 4/Medium weight” but I think it is thinner than the standard Size 4 and I like to refer to it as Size 3. You could also crochet 2 bases and turn this design into a pillow to decorate your couch!

Stitches Used in the Celtic Crochet Pumpkin

Most of the stitches in this project are basic crochet stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. There are a few other variations to these stitches that are simple to do and explained in detail inside the pattern: half double crochet 2 together, surface slip stitch and working in the back loop only. I love that you can create so many beautiful and creative projects using only basic stitches!

Other Supplies Needed for this Project

In addition to the cotton yarn mentioned above you will need a 3.75mm (F) and 5.5mm (I) crochet hook. You will also need a yarn needle and at least 12 stitch markers – 6 in one color and 6 in another. I recommend using a 12″ x 12″ corkboard and straight sewing pins to help you weave the Celtic Knots.
