Christmas Crochet Cookie

This Christmas Crochet Cookie is easy to make and almost looks good enough to eat! 🙂 This project uses a small amount of medium weight acrylic yarn and a few other craft supplies. I love to decorate cookies at Christmas time but sometimes find it sad that everything gets eaten and our beautiful creations disappear. With this pretty project you can have a Christmas cookie that lasts for years to come and makes a great gift! I also love to create ornaments for our Christmas tree and by adding a simple ribbon hanger this cookie makes the perfect ornament. I think it would also look great to have several strung together on a chain length for a garland decoration.

Christmas Ornaments – Super Quick Project and Gift!

Christmas ornaments are a fun craft and make great gifts! They are quick and easy to add to a tree, garland or wreath. Many of our ornaments have special stories to go with them. Some might include a photo from a meaningful day or trip. Some others might have been made by one of my daughters when they were very young. And some might be gifts from family members who mean a lot to us. Every year when we decorate our tree we reflect on the specialness of each ornament and I am usually inspired to make some more! 😉 This Christmas Crochet Cookie ornament looks great on a tree!

Stitches Used in the Christmas Crochet Cookie

The stitches used in this Christmas Crochet Cookie are mostly single crochet and chain. Isn’t it neat how you can make so many creative things with the simplest of stitches? I recommend starting with an adjustable ring so there is no opening in the center but you can work the alternative included below Round 1. There are 2 other stitches included that are variations of the basic single crochet stitch – I provide links to short video tutorials to help with those. 🙂

Medium weight acrylic yarn in a brown gingerbread cookie color and white icing color (one skein of each color will make many ornaments)

(I used Red Heart Super Saver in colors Cafe Latte and White for my cookies – the Cafe Latte is the perfect color to look like gingerbread! 🙂)

3.75 mm crochet hook by Clover

(This crochet hook is much smaller than what is recommended for medium weight yarn but I wanted the stitches very tight)

5 stitch markers by Clover

Jumbo Tapestry Needle by Clover

Optional: 3/8” wide red ribbon

Small amount of brown felt and hot glue gun/glue sticks

Special Stitches and Abbreviations

Adjustable ring = Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through loop with hook;

Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) = (Insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop) twice, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Join with a sc (join with a single crochet) = With slip knot on hook, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Notes:

First a center pentagon is crocheted in the round and then each point is crocheted in rows

Next a simple single crochet edging is added around the entire star shape

Lastly the white icing details are added with tapestry needle and white yarn

Gauge is not necessary for this project

Instructions for the Christmas Crochet Cookie:

Special stitches are printed in bold and italicized text and defined above

Round 1: 

With brown yarn work 10 sc in an adjustable ring – do not join to 1^st sc with a sl st.

(Round 1 alternative: Ch 2, work 10 sc in 2nd ch from hk – do not join to 1st sc with a sl st)

Round 2: 

[(Sc, ch 1, sc) in next st – mark ch-1 sp with a stitch marker; sc in next st] around; sl st to 1^st sc. (5 ch-1 sps marked with stitch markers)

Each Star Point:

Now working in rows back and forth for each star point:

Row 1: 

Sc in next ch-1 sp; sc in each of the next 3 sts; sc in next ch-1 sp; Turn. (5 sc)

Row 2: 

Ch 1, Sc2tog over the next 2 sts, sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 3: 

Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 4: 

Ch 1, sc2tog over the 1^st and 2^nd st; sc2tog over the 2^nd and 3^rd st. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 5: 

Ch 1, sc2tog over the 2 sts in row. Fasten off.

Repeat Rows 1-5 in between all stitch markers marking ch-1 sps joining in 2^nd ch-1 sp of previous star point with a sc (this will replace the section marked with blue highlight above)

Edging:

With brown yarn work sc around entire star shape making sure to work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each point and a sl st in all ch-1 sps from Round 2

Finishing and Assembly:

Icing Edging:

With white yarn and working in the back loop only, join with sl st in any sl st of edging round; Work a sl st in each st around making sure to work (sl st, ch 1) at each point

Adding Other Icing Details:

With tapestry needle weave in all ends on Wrong Side of ornament

With tapestry needle and white yarn add icing details using photo as a guide

First work through center of cookie and add stitching to all angles between points

Then add stitching to all points again working through the center

Lastly add small angled stitches along longer lengths of stitching

Weave in all ends

Optional: Hot glue brown felt to Wrong Side of cookie

Attach a red ribbon hanger and bow with hot glue
