Two Color Crochet Dishcloth

Two Color Crochet Dishcloth

This two color crochet dishcloth is easy to make because it uses just 2 simple crochet stitches – can you believe it?! Plus, it also includes a very simple way to change colors each row without having to weave in a million ends – yay!!! The combination of the 2 stitches also creates great texture.

Stitches You Need to Know for this Crochet Dishcloth

I think this is a great project for confident beginners because it uses single crochet and half double crochet – that’s it! I love how you can create texture and an interesting color-pattern with these 2 stitches. You’ll love how easy it is to create this two color crochet dishcloth.

Crochet Dishcloth or Washcloth – You Decide!

Since this crochet dishcloth has good texture, it works well on dishes but you can also take it into the shower for a soft and practical washcloth. Then when you’re finished with it, just toss it in the wash and use again. I think this two color crochet dishcloth project would also make for a good gift especially if you make two in the same colors but swap which one is the “Main Color” for each one. Pair them with a fancy hand soap or scented hand-sanitizer and you have a thoughtful and practical gift that anyone can use!

Video Tutorial Included!

If you know how to single crochet and half double crochet but are not sure about the color-changing technique, no need to worry! I’ve put together a short video tutorial showing you all the steps and even a little trick I discovered for how to make sure your color-changes are smooth along the sides. Just scroll down to the instructions below and you’ll see the video, too.

St = stitch

Hk = hook

Lp = loop

Sk = skip

YO = yarn over

RS = Right Side

Notes:

This dishcloth is worked in rows changing to a new color during the last YO of the last stitch of each row

MC = Main Color (This is the color you will work in for Row 1 and all odd number rows up including Row 21 – this color will also be used for the edging)

CC = Coordinating Color (This is the color you will use for Row 2 and all other even Rows)

(See the longer green loops along the right side of the dishcloth? They come from changing the color at the end of the row but I figured out how to eliminate them with a quick little tip. I show you in the video tutorial below 🙂)

Video Tutorial – Step-by-Step!

Instructions for the Two Color Crochet Dishcloth:

With MC ch 26

Row 1 (Right Side):

In 2nd ch from hk (sc, hdc); [sk next ch, (sc, hdc) in next ch] across; For last hdc, work last YO with CC (dropping MC at side of Row). Turn. (13 shells – Shell = (sc, hdc))

For the remainder of the dishcloth: Each color you are not using you will carry along and crochet over it as you work the stitches for each row

This way both colors are ready to use at the end of every row and you will only need to weave in 6 ends – even though every row is a different color!

**Not sure what I mean? Check out the video tutorial above and you’ll see it’s easier than it sounds 🙂 **

Row 2:

Ch 1; [sk next hdc, (sc, hdc) in next sc] across; For last hdc, work last YO with other color. Turn. (13 shells)

Rows 3-21:

Repeat Row 2 alternating MC and CC every other row.

For very last hdc of Row 21, do not change colors.

Edging:

Side 1:

The Right Side of the dishcloth should be facing;

Ch 1, sc in same sc that worked last shell; Work sc evenly down side of rows to corner; sl st to 1st st of Row 1. Fasten off.

Side 2:

With Right Side still facing and MC, join with sc in next corner (at end of Row 1); work sc evenly across to corner; sl st to 1st st of Row 21. Fasten off.

Finishing of the Two Color Crochet Dishcloth:

On Wrong Side of dishcloth weave in ends in stitches with same color

And there you have it – your Two Color Crochet Dischloth is complete!

  1. I used a size G hook and K C lightweight cotton yarn in aqua and cream to make a child- sized hot pad and dish towel to match the aqua colored toaster and coffee pot that accessorize a children’s kitchen we purchased for our granddaughter for Christmas. It was so easy to follow your pattern and I love how the colors changed without a bunch of ends to weave. Thank you for this pattern. I would love to share a picture but don’t know how:)

    1. Wonderful! So glad you enjoyed making this project and how it turned out. I would love to see a photo! You are welcome to email to me the photo. (You’ll find my email on the About page of this blog) Thank you for sharing 🙂
