Textured Crochet Mug Rug

I LOVE textured stitch patterns – don’t you? This Textured Crochet Mug Rug uses a very simple variation of the half double crochet stitch. It is easy enough for a beginner!

Plus, this project could be used as a mug rug, dishcloth or spa cloth – you pick!

You could also use this stitch pattern to make bigger projects like kitchen towels, throws and afghans – just make sure you do the one tip I share below.

Let’s get started!

Skill Level: Beginner

Measurements:

Approximately 7” wide x 8 ½” long

Supplies:

1 skein of any dishcloth cotton yarn

(I used Premier Home Cotton yarn (2.65 oz/131 yds/75g per skein) in color #38-05 Peach)

Size I/8/5.5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

Back loop only = At the top of every crochet stitch there are 2 loops; Normally you insert your hk under BOTH loops but for this technique you insert your hk under the back loop only (the loop farthest from you) – This technique helps add texture to your stitches and rows

Front Loop Only = At the top of every crochet stitch there are 2 loops; Normally you insert your hk under BOTH loops but for this technique you insert your hk under the front loop only (the loop closest to you) – This technique helps add texture to your stitches and rows

Ch = chain  

Sp = space

Hk = hook

Lp = loop

Sk = skip

YO = yarn over

Ch 29

**TIP for STITCH: The key to this stitch pattern is to start with an ODD number of chains – this will place your back loop and front loop stitches in alternate places and give your project the best texture**

Row 1:  Hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (27 hdc)

Row 2:  Ch 2, (hdc in next st in back loop only, hdc in next st in front loop only) across up to last st; hdc in back loop of last st. Turn.

Rows 3-19: Repeat Row 2

Row 20:  Ch 2, working in both lps now, hdc in each st across. Do not fasten off.

Edging:

Ch 1; Work sl st evenly along side of rows; ch 1 at next corner; sl st across bottom edge of Row 1; ch 1 at next corner; work sl st evenly along other side of rows; ch 1; sl st across last row; sl st to 1^st sl st. Fasten off.
