Crochet Mug Cozy – Easy and Celtic!
Today I have a free crochet mug cozy pattern for you. It’s easy and quick! A crochet mug cozy helps protect your hands when holding a hot drink and it can help keep your drink warm. This cozy pattern includes buttons so it is simple to take on and off and use with a variety of mugs.
Celtic Knot Decoration
The highlight of this mug cozy is the decorative Celtic Knot – you can add one or two to your cozy base – both options are shown below! I love how the Celtic Knot looks in the shades of green up against the lavender-colored base. The knot is easy to make especially with the diagram I include with the instructions below! (And now there is a Left-Hander version of this diagram available, too!)
To make this project you will need to know basic crochet stitches such as the single crochet, double crochet and half double crochet.

Finished Measurements of this Crochet Mug Cozy:
Mug Cozy base = 10 Β½β long x 3 Β½β wide
Celtic Knot = 3 ΒΎβ long x 2 ΒΎβ wide
Mugs come in a wide variety of sizes so youβll want to measure the circumference of your mug and then subtract one inch β this is the length you want for your cozy base
Gauge:
Gauge is not necessary for this project as long as you make the cords the length stated in the pattern
Abbreviations:
Ch (chain)
Sc (single crochet)
Sl st (slip stitch)
Dc (double crochet)
YO (yarn over)
Lp (loop)
Sp (space)
Hk(hook)
Sk (skip)
Special Stitches:
Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many βVβsβ and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps β it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides
Click here to watch a short video tutorial on my Youtube Channel about this technique
Back Loop Only = Insert hook into back loop of each stitch
Click here to watch a short video tutorial on my Youtube Channel about this technique
Hdc2tog (half double crochet 2 together) = YO, insert hk into next st; YO, draw up a lp; YO, insert hk into next st; YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 5 lps on hk
Notes for the Mug Cozy Pattern:
First the cozy base is crocheted and the closure is attached
Next 2 cords are made and then these 2 cords are woven into the Celtic Knots
Lastly the knots are sewn to the base
The stitch pattern for the base (sc, 2 dc) creates a βshellβ
**You can purchase an instant downloadable ad-free PDF of the project here in my Etsy shop**

In these photos you can see the edging around the base, where the closure loops and buttons are placed and how to pin the knots after you have woven them β These photos also show where you can place the knots

With tapestry needle and yarn tails sew closure loops onto the Wrong Side and one short end of base (Photo 4 above)
In same manner sew buttons on to other end of base on Right Side and making sure to line up with loop placement (See 4th photo of this blog post – just under the “Notes” section)
Lay cozy base flat on work surface and pin Celtic Knot pieces in place (See 4th photo again for placement)
