Textured Stripes Scarf

The Textured Stripes Scarf is an easy 2-row repeat using only the half double crochet stitch! I love how this stitch looks with the Red Heart Super Saver Stripes yarn. Not only will this crochet scarf keep you warm but it also will keep you stylish during the winter months! Plus, this pattern includes a fun twisted fringe that I have a special way of making (that I have not seen anyone else do). 🙂

Stitches Used in the Textured Stripes Scarf

As mentioned above, the only stitches you need to know to make this scarf are the chain and half double crochet. If you would like to add the twisted fringe, you will need to know how to do the slip stitch as well. The half double crochet stitch is a wonderful stitch that works quickly. I like to use it for cold weather projects because it gives great thickness and warmth to your projects. This crochet scarf pattern alternates rows of plain half double crochet and rows of an easy textured stitch – “back crossed hdc”. We will cross one hdc behind another which makes the second hdc “pop out” on the back side of the row giving us the fun texture you see in all the scarf photos!

Even though this pattern uses mainly a very basic crochet stitch, it can take a little practice to figure out how to cross one hdc behind another so I’ve created a short step-by-step video tutorial to help with this! I share a few tricks with how to work the stitches along with my original trick to creating the twisted fringe. I have seen many people teach this fringe technique on-line but ALL of them require rotating your wrist hundreds of times . . . this is too much for my wrists 😏 so I came up with an alternative. Red Heart Super Saver Stripes – Color = Cool Stripe – 2 skeins

(Each skein is 5 oz/141 g/236 yds/215 m – This yarn comes in many different color combinations!)

H/8/5mm hook

Yarn needle

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Bcr hdc (back crossed half double crochet) = sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st working BEHIND hdc just made

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

Sk (skip)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Notes:

Scarf is worked back and forth in rows

Instructions for the Textured Stripes Scarf by Jennifer E Ryan:

Ch 25

Row 1 (Right Side):

Hdc in 2nd ch from hk and in each st across; Turn.

Row 2 (Wrong Side):

Ch 1, hdc in first st, work bcr hdc across the row to last st, hdc in last st; Turn.

Row 3 (Right Side):

Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until scarf measures 40″ to 60” long

(Scarf looks best if you end on a Row 3 repeat)

Optional:  Work twisted fringe along both short ends of scarf

[With Wrong Side facing join with sl st in side of 1st st on short side; (sl st in next st, pull out about a 10” long loop, twist with hook 20 times, fold in half and let loop twist together, sl st in same st) across; Fasten off.]

Repeat [ ] along other short side

Weave in ends
