Crochet Mandala Egg
The Crochet Mandala Egg is a lacy and pretty project that works up quickly for Easter Egg decorations. These egg decorations use a small amount of Size 10 cotton crochet thread and shimmery sequins in a variety of colors and sizes. I recommend using foam eggs that you can find at your local craft store or on-line because they are light weight and allow for you to attach everything with straight pins. If you don’t have foam eggs, you can use plastic, wooden or real eggs but would need to glue on the motifs and embellishments. (I like to use hot glue for something like this.)

Variations of the Crochet Mandala Egg Pattern
In this post I show you 3 different versions of the Crochet Mandala Egg Pattern. First, you can make 2 of the mandala motifs and attach them to the sides of the egg – this creates a neat pattern between the motifs along the sides. Second, you can use these 2 motifs on the top and bottom of the egg instead which creates a neat zig-zag pattern around the middle. And lastly, you can crochet only 5 rounds of the pattern and add these smaller motifs all around the egg with sequins in between.

Stitches Used in the Crochet Mandala Egg
The Crochet Mandala Egg pattern uses all basic crochet stitches. You will need to know chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. If you need a refresher for what each stitch entails, you can read the “Special Stitches and Abbreviations” section above. You’ll also need to do an adjustable ring and a ch-3 picot – these are easy to do and I also provide a link to a short video tutorial for each to help you! 🙂

Size 10 cotton crochet thread
Sequins and sequin pins
(or you can use a hot glue gun and glue sticks)
Foam eggs – 2.75inches tall (or you can use plastic, wooden, real – only foam works with the sequin pins)
Optional: Short length of thin ribbon for hanger
Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Adjustable Ring: Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through lp with hk;

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook
Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch; YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook
Ch-3 picot (Chain 3 picot) = chain 3, slip stitch in 3rd chain from hook

Notes:
The mandala motif can be used in a variety of ways for this project – attached to the sides or to the top and bottom
You can also stop after Round 5 and attach a smaller motif to the egg
Instructions for the Crochet Mandala Egg by Jennifer E Ryan:
Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above
Mandala Motif – Make 2:
Round 1:
6 sc in adjustable ring; join with sl st to 1st sc. (6 sc)
Round 2:
(Ch 5, sl st in next st) 5 times; ch 3, dc in base of starting ch-5 (counts as last ch-5 sp). (6 ch-5 sps)
Round 3:
Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 6, sc in next sp) around ending with a sl st in 1st sc. (6 ch-6 sps)
Round 4:
(7 hdc in next ch-6 sp, sl st in next sc) around. (42 hdc and 6 sl sts)
Round 5:
(Ch 4, sl st in center hdc of next set of 7 hdcs, ch -3 picot, sl st in same hdc, ch 4, sl st in next sl st) around. (12 ch-4 sps, 6 ch-3 picots, 6 sl sts)
Round 6:
(Ch 5, ch-3 picot, ch 5, sl st in next sl st ) around. (6 large sps with a ch-3 picot in center)
Round 7:
(Ch 7, ch-3 picot, ch 7, sl st in next st) around. (6 larger sps with a ch-3 picot in center). Fasten off.
Weave in ends
Finishing and Assembly:
Side Variation:
Pin center of motif with sequin to center of one side of egg
Pin sequin to ch-3 picots in Rounds 6 & 7 making sure all spaces are pulled out to maximum length and all spaces in between stitches are even
Continue to add pins and sequins wherever desired
**Can use hot glue and sequins instead of pins especially if not using a foam egg
Repeat with other motif on other side of egg making sure to slightly turn second motif so points fit in between points of other motif
Top & Bottom Variation:
Apply motif in same manner as above but place center of one motif in center top and other motif in center bottom of egg
Make sure last round of ch-7 sps alternate with other motifs last round
Pin or hot glue short length of ribbon or thread as a hanger
