Patriotic Crochet Flower Pillow
The Patriotic Crochet Flower Pillow is a unique home decor accent that uses a wide variety of crochet stitches and a small amount of yarn. I love to crochet red, white and blue projects especially since my birthday is near the 4th of July and I grew up celebrating both days together with a lot of red, white and blue decorations! (For more patriotic crochet projects, scroll down to see the links to the free patterns.)
Bold Chevrons and a Big Flower
This pillow is made in 2 pieces. First you crochet the simple chevron base – I think you’ll be surprised at how easy it is – would you believe it is a one-row repeat! All it uses is double crochet stitches – to make the “peaks” you cram several double crochets in one stitch and to make the “valleys” you crochet 5 double crochets together. The flower uses several techniques to get the 3D petal look and a many stitches of varying heights.
Two Options for Yarn – Size 3 or Size 4
My first version of this pillow (as shown in the first photo above) is made with Size 3 cotton yarn and a thin shimmery yarn by Berroco. This beautiful yarn is very pretty and luxurious – it makes the flower and the whole pillow look very classy. My second version of the Patriotic Crochet Flower Pillow is crocheted with Size 4 acrylic yarn in blue, white and a metallic red. Using the thicker yarn makes for a slightly bigger pillow and flower – I love how the metallic yarn looks next to the blue and white chevron stripes. The pillow base is only 21 rows and the flower is only 11 rounds – so whether you use the Size 3 yarn (DK weight) or the Size 4, your pillow will work up quickly. Throughout this pattern you will see photos of both pillow versions.

Notes for the Patriotic Crochet Flower Pillow:
The pillow is made from a long rectangle of the chevron stitch made in alternating colors (every 3 rows) which is then sewn together to form pillow shape.
The peaks created by the chevron stitch along the top and bottom are eliminated (and hidden inside) when straight edges of pillow are sewn.
When changing color, leave about 6β for each yarn tail to use for assembly.
When changing color, fasten off current color and join new color with a sl st in 1st st of row β this would be the st that usually is skipped β do not skip a st when first row of new color.
When dc3tog at end of each row, the ch-2 turning chain counts as 3rd st.
Join with a sl st to first stitch at end of each round of Flower unless otherwise stated.

Shift rectangle so seam in the center back of the pillow
Using blue yarn and needle sew up one opening of tube in a straight line as shown in photo above – some of the points will not show on the finished pillow – these will be tucked inside on the top and bottom edge
Turn pillow so Right Side out
Insert pillow form
Sew up top opening of pillow with blue yarn and needle β fold points of chevron stitch inward and use invisible stitch across

Tada! Your Patriotic Crochet Flower Pillow is Complete!
Tada! Your Patriotic Crochet Flower Pillow is Complete! Which version did you make? The cotton one or the acrylic one? Of course, you could crochet this pillow with other colors, too. Chevrons in shades of gray with a burgundy flower would look pretty. Or several colorful stripes with a white flower could also look nice.
