Crochet Flower Rock Cozy

The Crochet Flower Rock Cozy is a quick and unique crochet project that uses simple crochet stitches with cotton crochet thread. If you’ve seen our blog page titled, “Rock Fun“, then you know I love to cover round rocks with crochet stitches. Smooth river rocks are like little canvases that help the beauty and patterns of crochet stitches really stand out and shine. Plus, since they are so quick to make, I love leaving a crochet-covered rock, like this Crochet Flower Rock Cozy, in the outdoors somewhere where a passerby will find it and take it home to enjoy.

Stitches You Need to Know:

To make this rock cozy you will need to know a few crochet stitches, such as: the chain, single crochet and double crochet. There are 2 other stitches used to put it all together – the Puff stitch and a double treble crochet. I explain how to do each below in the “Special Stitches” section but I also show you in a step-by-step video tutorial I created to go with this pattern. Scroll down to watch the tutorial and see how easy the puff stitch really is.

What to Do with the Crochet Flower Rock Cozy?

This cute little crochet flower rock cozy can be used for a variety of things. You can add it to your garden as a decoration. You can give it to a friend that they can use in their home office on their desk as a paperweight. Or you can take it with you on a walk on a trail and leave it behind for someone to find. I once left a crochet rock cozy behind after we stayed in a cabin in the mountains – the owner of the cabins loved it and kept it on hand on a shelf as a unique decoration to welcome other travelers. The design of this cozy allows for you to write a message on the back of the rock, too!

Size 3 or Size 10 Cotton crochet thread  – 1 skein will make more than one cozy – I recommend Lizbeth crochet thread and Aunt Lydia’s Crochet thread – both come in Size 3 and Size 10

(For a more delicate rock cozy I used the Size 10 thread but this is more challenging to work with because it is very thin. You can make this project with Size 3 thread which is thicker and easier to work with – your cozy will come out larger and would fit a larger rock)

2.75mm (C ) or 3.75mm (F) (to go with the Size 3 thread) and 1.5mm steel hook (to go with the Size 10 thinner thread) Clover crochet hooks – These hooks have great soft handles that prevent your hand from cramping

(If you have not used cotton crochet thread before, I highly recommend practicing this pattern with medium weight yarn from your stash and a size H crochet hook. I also recommend using the Size 3 thread which is thicker first after practicing with the medium weight yarn)

Round smooth rock – about 3” in diameter (or 5” for thicker yarn) – Can purchase on Amazon here:

(It is much more fun to search for a rock in the outdoors but if you can’t find one where you live, then these rocks are a great substitute)

Your Crochet Flower Rock Cozy is complete!

Crochet Flower Rock Cozy shown crocheted in tan thread and sitting in a garden with red flowers

Now your Crochet Flower Rock Cozy is complete and ready to put in your garden, give to a friend or to leave as a treasure for someone to find! I often crochet my rock cozies while I am outdoors and enjoying the pretty place that I plan on leaving the rock. I find it therapeutic to sit outdoors listening to the sounds of nature while making this crochet flower rock cozy. Another tip that I often do if I am pressed for time is that I crochet up to Round 8 and then complete Round 8 once I find a rock while I’m out. One of the neat things about this pattern is that your completed rock cozy will fit a variety of rocks – the one shown above is oval and longer than 3″ but the stitches allow for a lot of give.

  1. Love the idea and it looks so beautiful! I can’t find a round rock though. How can I modify the design to fit one that is more oval shaped?

    1. Hi! Thank you for your comment – you can make all the chain spaces longer for Rounds 2, 3 and 4 and that will give the project more give and stretch. You can also buy round river rocks on Amazon right here: – It is much more fun to search for a rock in the outdoors but if you can’t find one where you live, then these rocks are a great substitute. 🙂
