Easy Crochet Mushroom

This Easy Crochet Mushroom took me less than 15 minutes to crochet and looks great in my home with our fall decorations. I made it with a small amount of supplies from Hobby Lobby and basic crochet stitches. I love that mushrooms are popular right now – I’ve always thought of them as very interesting and the little red ones with white spots are so cute!

Supplies from Hobby Lobby

Earlier in the summer I was walking through the aisles of all the fall decorations at Hobby Lobby and loving all of the new colors and products. Of course, I wasn’t ready for fall to arrive and wanted to enjoy summer for several more weeks. But then I noticed something that I already have many of at home because they work great when decorating our mantel. They allow you to easily display decorations at different heights and come in all sorts of colors. Then it came to me that these little ceramic items would make great mushroom stems and all I would need to do is crochet the signature mushroom cap! (Read on to find out what this special item is 😉)

All other supplies I also purchased at Hobby Lobby and you can see the list of them below. I decided to use the Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth yarn for this project – it looks so luxurious and has a great texture for fall. I have created several other projects with Velvet yarn that you can see here.

Stitches Used in the Easy Crochet Mushroom

The Easy Crochet Mushroom is not only quick but also easy to crochet because it mainly uses single crochet stitches – yay! By working the stitches in the round they create a tight fabric with a pretty texture. To make this project you’ll also need to know how to work the half double crochet and a single crochet increase. A “single crochet increase” is just working 2 single crochets into one stitch. Sometimes this can make large gaps or holes in your rows/rounds so I suggest a neat (and easy) technique that helps with this to make your mushroom caps look their best! (You’ll find the explanation in the Special Stitches and Abbreviations section below)

Height of finished mushroom – approximately 4 1/2″ tall

Diameter of mushroom cap – approximately 4 1/2″

Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth yarn – 1 skein – You need 16 yards for one mushroom (so you can make 5 mushrooms with 1 skein of this yarn)

Fiberfil – small amount

Peel and Stick White Felt – one sheet

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook

Inv. Inc. (invisible increase) = Work single crochet into back loop only of next st; work single crochet under both loops of same stitch

Back Loop Only = Insert hook only into the back loop at the top of the stitch

Notes:

Project is worked in the round

Instructions for the Easy Crochet Mushroom by Jennifer Ryan:

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Ch 2

Round 1:

6 sc in 2^nd ch from hk – do not join for this round and throughout; work entire cap in a spiral.

**Mark 1^st sc with stitch marker for all rounds so can keep track of count and rounds.

Round 2:

2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

**Optional increase technique – work “Invisible increase” (Inv. Inc.) for every time you work 2 sc in one stitch (which is an increase) – see Special Stitches above for explanation – this keeps your work tight and minimizes large holes in the rounds

Round 3:

(2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around. (18 sc)

Round 4:

(2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) around. (24 sc)

Round 5:

(2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts) around. (30 sc)

Rounds 6-8:

Sc in each st around

Round 9:

Working in the back loop only, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to 1^st st. Fasten off with long tail for assembly.

Finishing and Assembly:

With yarn needle and yarn tail work a running stitch through last round

Stuff cap with fiberfil

Easy crochet mushroom stuffed with fiberfil

Place cap over mini cake stand and pull yarn tail tight

Tie yarn tail in a double knot and weave in ends

Make Your Mushroom Temporary!

As I worked up a bunch of these easy crochet mushrooms, I realized that I may want to re-use some of the mini-cake stands for other decorating projects. So, here is how you attach the mushroom cap so it is removable at the end of the season and you can put your mini-cake stands to use in other displays!

Steps on how to make your mushroom decoration temporary so you can re-use the mini cake stand

Peel and stick white felt backing with circles traced onto it and scissors nearby

Cut out 9 circles of peel and stick felt – each circle is about 1/2″ in diameter

(If you don’t have peel and stick felt, you can use regular felt and a hot glue gun)

Add circles to cap using photo as a guide (and peeling off the paper backing) – be careful, once they are stuck to the yarn, they are hard to remove without damaging the yarn!

Optional: Add a felt circle to bottom of stand to protect surfaces

Your Easy Crochet Mushroom is Complete!

Your Easy Crochet Mushroom is complete! Did you have fun making a cute mushroom? I loved making these and quickly cranked out about 7! To make the project go even faster I drew several circles on the back of the Peel and Stick Felt square and cut them all out at once. (see photo above) Then I put them in a bowl and was able to grab them quickly to stick on as I finished each mushroom cap. I love how the Peel and Stick Felt has a paper backing -makes it much easier to trace a shape template and cut it out accurately.
