Easy Crochet Water Bottle Holder
This easy crochet water bottle holder works up fast and is made out of plarn! Plarn is yarn made from recycled plastic bags and/or tablecloths. I love to upcycle plastic in my crochet projects. (Check out some other free plarn crochet patterns here) This is an easy crochet pattern because it uses the same stitch for most of the water bottle holder. I love the texture this stitch gives to the project. I explain how to do the easy stitch below but if you are someone who prefers a video, then there is a step-by-step video tutorial, too!
Crochet Stitches You’ll Need to Know
For this water bottle holder project you’ll need to know the basic stitches: slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet and half double crochet. The special stitch is a simple variation of the half double crochet. You’ll also need a small amount of recycled plastic bags or tablecloths. But if you’d rather not use the plastic, you could use a rope-like yarn (such as Bernat’s Maker Home Dec yarn) – just be aware that you would need to work more rounds for your bottom circle since alternate yarns aren’t usually as thick as the plarn.
Making the Plarn for the Easy Crochet Water Bottle Holder
It’s easy to make plarn and recycle tablecloths after a party – just rinse or wipe off, let dry and then use in this crochet project! I show you how to make plarn from plastic bags here. It is best to have a flat surface to work on with large sharp scissors. You’ll want to make strips about 2 inches wide and don’t forget to use the hook I recommend below – it makes a big difference when crocheting with the plastic strips!

Plarn – (That’s yarn made from recycled plastic bags and tablecloths – It’s easy to recycle the tablecloths after a party – just rinse or wipe off, let dry and then use in a crochet project!)
(You just need one tablecloth per color cut into 2” wide strips – when you come to the end of a strip, just tape the next strip to the end and fold over – quick & easy! You can see this technique in action in the video tutorial here under the chapter “Joining the Strips”)
N/P 10mm crochet hook by Clover – essential!
(Did you know that this is the best hook for crocheting with plarn? The shape of the hook, its smooth plastic structure and the large size make working with plarn easy and fast – yay!)
Scissors – nice sharp large scissors work best

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
Sc (single crochet) = Insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop; YO, pull through 2 loops on hook
Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, draw up a loop, (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice
HHdc (Herringbone Half Double Crochet) = YO, insert hk into st; YO, draw up a lp through st AND through 1st lp on hk; YO, pull through 2 lps on hk
HHdc join (Herringbone Half Double Crochet Join) = With slip knot of new color on hk; YO, insert hk into 1st st of round; YO, draw up a lp through st AND through 1st lp on hk; YO, pull through 2 lps on hk
Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Starting ch-3 of Round 2 counts as a dc

Option given for making bottom circle bigger to accommodate different sized bottles

Instructions for the Easy Crochet Water Bottle Holder:
With Lime Green ch 2
Round 1:
Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk; join with sl st in 1st sc. (6 sc)
Round 2:
Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same st; 2 dc in each st around; 2 dc in joining sl st; sl st to top of starting ch-3. (14 dc)
**Note: Test to see if the circle created so far is the same size as the bottom of your water bottle – if you need a bigger circle see the extra round below; If circle is correct size, move on to Round 3**
Round 3:
Ch 2, working in the back loop and the top back bar of each st, Hhdc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off.

Arrow is pointing to top back bar of dc st – make sure to insert hk through BOTH the back lp AND the top back bar
(Next color will be Hot Pink)
Round 4:
Join new color with a Hhdc join; now working in both loops of each st, Hhdc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off.
Rounds 5-11:
Repeat Round 4 with each color going in this order:
White
Lime Green
Hot Pink
White
Lime Green
Hot Pink
White
**If you need a taller cozy, just continue to repeat Round 4 in the color sequence*
Extra Round (if need a larger base circle):
Ch 1, (2 sc in next st; sc in next st) around; join with sl st to 1st sc.
Handle:
Ch 75
Working in the back bar of the chain, hdc in 3rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly
Finishing and Assembly for the Easy Crochet Water Bottle Holder:
I turned my cozy inside out to make sewing on the handle easier
Using tapestry needle and matching plarn, sew 2-3” of each handle end inside holder
Tada! Your Easy Crochet Water Bottle Holder is complete. 😊 Did you like how yours turned out? You can use this for any size water bottle but if you have a very heavy water bottle, you’ll want to double the thickness of the handle to make sure it can hold the weight. Now you have a bright and cheery water bottle cozy to take with you on walks, to the gym, to work, to school or wherever! It’s practical and eco-friendly!
