Crochet Bag – FREE pattern

You can never have too many bags, right? Especially crochet bags? 😉 I love collecting bags for my crochet projects, groceries, traveling, gifting and spending a day outdoors. Now I have a crochet bag pattern for you that has another special purpose!

Fostering an “Attitude of Gratitude”

This past summer I saw a unique bag in a gift shop and I love the idea that came with it. The bag had 2 pockets and a notepad & pen inside. Each day you write something you are thankful for on one of the pieces of paper and then put it inside the larger pocket of the bag. Then when you are feeling discouraged and down, you take out your little notes of thankfulness and read them – reminding yourself of all you have to be thankful for. 🙂

With Thanksgiving right around the corner I wanted to create a crochet bag that could be used in the same way. Introducing the “Crochet Pocket of Thanks“.

Crochet Bag Pattern Info

This crochet bag is made very simply using an easy variation on the half double crochet stitch – the stitch is the same for the whole bag. Then an easy circle motif and heart are sewn on to the front of the bag to create the pocket that holds the paper.

This is my first time designing and crocheting with Wander yarn from www.furlscrochet.com – I LOVE the vibrant colors and how soft the yarn feels. You’ll see all the supply details below to make your own crochet bag to help you be more thankful.

Skill Level: Easy

Measurements:

6″ wide x 6″ tall (base white bag)

5 1/4″ diameter (circle motif)

2 1/2″ wide x 2 1/4″ tall (heart motif)

Wander yarn by Furls Crochet – 1 skein each color: Sunrise, Fawn, Laguna, Alabaster, Meadow (in order as shown in photo above)

(This is a medium weight acrylic yarn with 120 yards each skein – I was able to crochet the bag base with a little over half of the one skein)

G/4mm hook and H/5mm hook

Jumbo Tapestry Needle

Small notepad or paper (Approx. 3 x 5 inches)

Pen

Notes

The bag base (white part) is crocheted in the round

Then the heart is sewn to the circle motif

Lastly the circle motif and handle are sewn to the bag base

Abbreviations

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Sl st (slip stitch)

Sc (single crochet)

Hdc (half double crochet)

Dc (double crochet)

Tr (treble crochet)

Special Stitches

Hhdc (herringbone half double crochet) = YO (yarn over), insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a lp, pull hook through first loop on hook, YO, pull hook through 2 loops on hook

Adjustable Ring = Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through lp with hk; work stitches into loop and then pull yarn tail to tighten and close up center hole

Instructions for the Crochet Bag:

All Special Stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

White Bag Base:

With Alabaster (white) and H/5mm hook ch 21

Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Do not turn. Now working on other side of ch, sc in each ch across; join with sl st to 1st sc; ch 1. (40 sc)

Round 2: Hhdc in each st around – do not join with a sl st but work in a spiral marking 1st st in each round with a stitch marker to keep track of rounds.

Rounds 3-17: Repeat Round 2 – Fasten off.

Heart:

With G/4mm hook and Sunrise (pink) color:

Round 1: Work (ch 3, 3tr, 3 dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st) in an adjustable ring. Fasten off.

**If you would rather not do an adjustable ring, you can do this alternative Round 1: Ch 2, (ch 3, 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st) all in the 2nd ch from hk. Fasten off.**

Round 2: With Alabaster (white) and working in the back loops only, join with sc in 1st ch of Round 1; sc in each of the next 2 chs; 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 4 sts; (sc, ch 1, sc) in next st (this is the bottom point of the heart); sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 3 chs, sl st in center of heart. Fasten off.

Circle Motif:

With H/5mm hook and Fawn (tan) yarn

Round 1: Work (ch 3, 12 dc in an adjustable ring); join with sl st to 1st dc of round (working over the ch-3 and moving it to the back) (12 dc)

Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in 1st st and in each st around; join with sl st to 1st dc of round (working over the ch-3 and moving it to the back) (24 dc)

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each of the next 2 sts; (2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 2 sts) around; join with sl st to 1st sc of round. Fasten off. (32 sc)

Round 4: With Meadow (green) join with hdc in any st; hdc in same st; hdc in each of the next 3 sts; (2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of the next 3 sts) around; join with sl st to 1st hdc of round. Fasten off. (40 hdc)

Round 5: With Blue join with hdc in any st; hdc in same st; hdc in each of the next 4 sts; (2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of the next 4 sts) around; join with sl st to 1st hdc of round. Fasten off. (48 hdc)

Round 6: With Sunrise join with a sl st in any st; (sk next st, 5 hdc in next st, sk next st, sl st in next st) around ending with sl st in 1st sl st of round. Fasten off. (12 scallops)

Weave in ends

Handle:

With Alabaster (white) and H/5mm hook ch a length that measures approximately 20″

Row 1: Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Fasten off with a long tail for assembly.

Finishing of this cute Crochet Bag:

With about 2″ of each handle end inserted into each side of the bag, whipstitch handle to bag so secure

With tapestry needle and Sunrise yarn sew heart to center of circle passing joining stitches through tops of Round 1 sts

With tapestry needle and Laguna yarn sew circle to bag base from Scallop 1 to 8 (leaving an opening on top of 4 scallops to make the notepad/paper pocket) – Stitching can go up and down through the round of stitches with the Laguna (blue) yarn

Insert small notepad or small pieces of paper into front pocket of bag – Add a pen to inside of bag – and your Crochet Pocket of Thanks is complete!

I really like how this crochet bag turned out. It can be hung on a doorknob, your bedpost, a kitchen cabinet – anywhere you want to be reminded to be thankful. Of course, you can use this little crochet bag however you like. And the circle motif would make a cute coaster or mug rug, too!
