I am excited to share this NEW and FREE Celtic Knot Crochet pattern with you – Thank you Tamara Kelly of Moogly for inviting me to join in on the 2022 CAL fun!

Introducing the Celtic Woven Square!

If this is your first Celtic Knot Crochet project – don’t worry. All of the stitches used are basic stitches and the knot weaving techniques are straightforward especially if you download the accompanying color diagram found here.  I also created a step-by-step video tutorial that you can watch here.

I crocheted the square shown above with Red Heart’s With Love yarn – Last year’s Celtic Knot Square was crocheted with shades of blue and gray so this year I thought I would make a square using shades of green – Evergreen and Lettuce – on a background of Light Gray. Which colors are you going to crochet with?

Yarn options: It is best to use a medium weight acrylic yarn if you want your square to come out the same size as mine – one skein of each color is more than enough for one square. Start with picking a color for the cords of the knot. I think it works best to pick another shade of the same color for the thin edging. Then you’ll want to decide on a color that helps the knot design really pop. As you can see by the photos, I decided to repeat the darker green (Evergreen) as part of the edging that turns the knot into an even square.

Skill Level: Easy

Measurements:

Completed Knot = Approx. 14″ across (corner to corner)

Finished Square = 12” x 12”

Red Heart With Love – 1 skein each of Evergreen, Lettuce & Light Grey

6.00mm (J) hook

Cork board or foam core board (12” x 12”)

20-30 straight sewing pins

8 stitch markers

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 14 hdc = 4 inches; Cord width with edging = Approx. 1 1/4 – 1/2″

Abbreviations and Special Stitches:

(The Special Stitches are in bold and italicized text within the pattern below)

YO = yarn over;  Hk = hook

Ch = chain; Lp = loop

Sp = space; Sk = skip

Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hk into st; YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

Join with hdc (join with half double crochet) = With slip knot on hk, YO, insert hk into st; YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

Back Loop Only = Insert hk only into the back lp at the top of the stitch

Join with sl st (join with slip stitch) = With slip knot on hk, insert hk into st; YO, pull through st and through lp on hk

Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hk into st, YO, pull through stitch and lp on hk

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk

Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hook) twice

Notes:

First 2 cords are crocheted with Evergreen (darker green) and then edged with Lettuce (lighter green)

Next these 2 cords are woven into the decorative knot using diagram – FREE PDF download of diagram can be found here

Lastly a square is crocheted with the Light Grey and the knot is sewn onto the Right Side

Instructions:

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Stitches are written in a list format so easier to keep your place in pattern – Each Loop section is also included in the list as shown on the knot diagram

Cord A – Approximately 59” long:

With Evergreen ch 185

Row 1: Working in the back bar of the ch, hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each of the next 14 chs;

Loop 1:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 10 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of the next 35 chs;

Loop 2:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 10 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 35 chs;

Loop 3:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 10 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 35 chs;

Loop 4:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 10 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 15 chs. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 2:  With Right Side facing join with hdc in 1^st hdc of Row 1; hdc in each st across. Fasten off.

Attach “Cord A” label to starting end of cord

Edging: Work in Lettuce

Along Both Outside Edges of Cord: With Right Side facing and working in back loop only,  join with sl st in 1^st st at end of cord; loosely sl st in each st across. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Cord B – Approximately  54” long:

This cord uses stitch markers in Row 1

With Evergreen ch 170

Row 1:  Working in the back bar of the ch, hdc in 3^rd ch from hk and in each of next 19 chs;

Loop 5:

2 hdc in next ch – mark second hdc with a stitch marker – Do this for entire cord when working 2 hdc in one stitch;

Hdc in each of next 5 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of the next 35 chs;

Loop 6:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 5 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 35 chs;

Loop 7:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 5 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 35 chs;

Loop 8:

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 5 chs;

2 hdc in next ch;

Hdc in each of next 15 chs. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 2: With Right Side facing and Evergreen join with hdc in 1^st  st of Row 1; hdc in each st across except stitch marked with stitch marker and the stitch before that stitch:

In these 2 stitches work 2 hdc in each. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Edging: Worked in Lettuce

Along Both Edges of Cord: Work as for edging for Cord A

Weave Knot:

1. Print out Celtic Knot diagram found here – making sure that measurement guideline measures 1”(2.54cm)

2. Prepare Diagram:  Cut along end of color on “Left Side” sheet; Line up this cut-edge with indicated line on “Right Side” and tape in place

3.  Pin knot diagram to corkboard

3. Make sure Right Side of all cords are facing

**Cord A = Yellow path; Cord B = Blue path **

4. Lay beginning of Cord A along yellow path lining up cord end with “A” (in circle) and pin in place

5.  Follow yellow path and arrows to continue placing cord in correct position making sure to pass over or under according to the diagram

6.  End of Cord A should meet up with beginning of Cord A and be hidden under cord – adjust cords so all loops even

7.  Lay beginning of Cord B along blue path lining up cord end with “B” (in circle) and pin in place

8.  Follow blue path and arrows to continue placing this cord in correct position making sure to pass over or under according to the diagram

9.  End of Cord B should meet up with beginning of Cord B and be hidden under cord – adjust cords so all loops even

8. Pin all crossings and remove knot from corkboard

9. Using yarn needle and yarn tails sew together cord ends making sure that stitching does not show on the Right Side

(Sewing all crossings can be done as sew entire knot to grey base square)

Base Square:

With Light Grey ch 41

Row 1 (Right Side):  In the back bar of the chain, sc in 2^nd ch from hk and in each ch across. (40 sc) Turn.

Row 2:  Ch 1; (sc, ch 1, dc) in 1^st st; (sk next 2 sts; (sc, ch 1, dc) in next st) across up to last 3 sts; sk next 2 sts, sc in last st. Turn.

Row 3:  Ch 2, sk 1^st sc, (sc, ch 1, dc) in each ch-1 sp across; sc in turning ch. Turn.

Rows 4-26: Repeat Row 3

Row 27:  Ch 1; (sk next st, sc in each of next 7 sts (counting ch-1 sps as sts)) across; sc in turning chain. Do not fasten off. (36 sts)

**Note: you may need to skip a few more stitches to make sure your row of sc lays flat**

Edging:

Round 1:  Now working down side of square, hdc in end of each row; ch-1 at the corner; continue working hdc in each st across bottom of Row 1 skipping every 10^th st (or more often if necessary to make sure this row lays flat); hdc in end of each row up next side of square; work hdc in each st across Row 27 skipping every 10^th st (or more often if necessary to make sure this row lays flat); join with sl st to 1^st hdc of edging. Fasten off.

Round 2: With Evergreen join with sl st in any stitch; ch 2, sc in each st around making sure to work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each ch-1 sp at each corner. Fasten off.

**You may want to change the height of the stitches for the 2 rounds of edging depending on how big your square turned out – You may find you need to do the first round in sc and the second round in sl st (these would be shorter stitches) or you may need to do a round of dc and a round of hdc (these would be taller stitches)**

Assembly:

With Right Side of knot facing up, lay on grey square making sure it is centered

Pin in place and then using needle and Evergreen, sew knot to square just under edging of both sides of each cord

Finishing:

Blocking:

Wet square with cold water so soaked through

Press out excess water with a clean towel

Lay out square on dry towel and flat surface pulling out spaces and stitches so lay flat and evenly;  

Optional: Place corkboard under towel and pin square taut at corners and along sides

Let dry completely

And there you have it –your Celtic Woven Square is complete!
