Easy Crochet Mug Rug
Have you ever crocheted a Mug Rug? They are fun and fast crochet projects that make for great little gifts – just pair them with a pretty mug and some gourmet tea.
Mug Rugs are great to use on a side table or on your dinner table to protect the furniture and they add some softness and a comfort-feel to a usually hard surface. Coffee-drinkers and tea-drinkers alike love to use Mug Rugs!
**UPDATE! – Now there is a step-by-step video tutorial for this project here – great for a beginner!

One of my favorite crochet stitches is the half double crochet (hdc) – it is quick to make and can have so many creative variations. In this easy crochet project you can create stripes of braids by working into different loops of the half double crochet stitches.

Special Stitches:
Back bar of the chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides
Click here to watch a short video tutorial on this technique
Back Bar of Hdc = On the backside of each hdc stitch there is a lp that descends diagonally at the top just below the back loop; insert hk into this “back bar”
Here is the video tutorial to help you see where to put your hook for these stitches – don’t you love the look it gives you?
Instructions:
All Special Stitches are in bold and italicized text and defined above
Ch 33
Row 1: Working in the back bar of the chain, hdc in 3rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (31 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2, working in the back bar of each hdc, hdc in each st across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, working in the back loop only of each st, hdc in each st across. Turn.
Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until piece measures 7” long
Fasten off.
Fringe:

Cut 36 lengths of yarn approximately 5” long
Add one length to each st along short sides of rug in this manner:
Fold length in half to make a lp; With hk pull lp through stitch going from Front to Back; Use hk to pull cut ends of length through lp; Tighten
Trim fringe so all same length – approximately 1 ¾”

And there you have it – your Easy Crochet Mug Rug is complete! I hope you enjoyed crocheting this project – please send along a photo to jennifer@celticknotcrochet.com. I love to see your creations!
