Easy Crochet Hat
A long time ago one of my daughters had a cute knitted hat that had 2 pom-poms – She looked adorable in it and ever since then I have been wanting to create a crochet pattern/version of the hat. I love how the 2 pom-poms look like ears – doesn’t it look so cute from the back, too?

So, I used a very simple stitch pattern that looks really pretty with the color changing yarn. The hat is lightweight and perfect for fall, late winter and early spring. Of course, you can make the hat with just one pom-pom, but I think it looks best with two!
Skill Level: Easy
Size:
Teen to Adult
**UPDATE: Instructions for child size hat are included below – Fits a child ages 2-5**

Measurements:
Teen/Adult Hat = 10 1/2″ long; 20″ around at ribbed edging (with a good amount of stretch)
Child Hat = 8 1/2″ long; 16-17″ around at ribbed edging (with a good amount of stretch)
Color changing yarn!

Instructions:
(All special stitches are in bold and italicized text and defined above)
Teen/Adult Hat
Round 1: Ch 3, 12 dc in and adjustable ring; join with sl st to 1st dc. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, (sc, hdc) in each st around. Turn. (24 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in each hdc around. Turn. (36 sts)
**At this point your circle should measure about 2 1/2″ across**
Round 4: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next dc; hdc in next sc] around. Turn. (48 sts)
**If you are having trouble seeing your stitches, then you can use these directions for Round 4: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next st; sk next st; hdc in next st] around. Turn. **
Round 5: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc) in next st; sk next st; (sc, hdc, dc) in next st; sk next st] around. Turn. (60 sts)
Round 6: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next st; sk each of next 2 sts; (sc, hdc, dc) in next st; sk next st] around. Turn. (72 sts)
**Now your circle should be about 4 3/4″ across**
Round 7: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in each dc around. Turn. (72 sts)
**Again, if you are having trouble seeing your stitches, then you can use these directions for Round 7: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc, dc) in the next st, sk each of next 2 sts] around. Turn.**
Rounds 8 – 18: Repeat Round 7
Round 19: Ch 1, (sc in each of next 2 sts; hdc in next st) around. Do not turn.
Round 20: Ch 2, FPdc around same st; (BPdc around next st, FPdc around next st) around; join with sl st to first post st of round. Do not turn.
Round 21: Ch 2, (FPdc around next FPdc; BPdc around next BPdc) around. (Do not turn)
Rounds 22 – 30: Repeat Round 21. Fasten off.

Child Hat:
Work Rounds 1-6 as for Teen/Adult Hat
Round 7: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next dc; (sc, hdc) in next dc] around. Turn.
(If you are having trouble seeing your stitches then use this for Round 7: Ch 1, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next st; sk each of next 2 sts; (sc, hdc) in next st; sk each of next 2 sts] around. )

Repeat Round 7 until hat measures 7 1/2″ from top center
Round to Prep for Ribbing: Ch 1, (sc in next hdc, hdc in next sc, sc in next dc, sc in next hdc, hdc in next sc) around. Do not turn.
(Again, if it is difficult to see your stitches, simply work sc in EVERY st except the single crochets – in every single crochet (shortest st), work a hdc)
1st Round of Ribbing: Work as for Round 20 of Adult hat
2nd Round of Ribbing: Work as for Round 21 of Adult hat
Next 4 rounds of Ribbing: Repeat Round 21 of Adult hat. Fasten off. (Total of 6 rounds of ribbing not including the prep round)
Finishing:
Make 2 pom-poms using Clover’s pom-pom maker using a long yarn length to tie center of pom-pom
**See this blog post here for a step-by-step photo tutorial of how to use the pom-pom maker: https://celticknotcrochet.com/2021/12/diy-yarn-ornament/
**Or click here to watch a video of how to use the pom-pom maker (at time stamp 2:20)
Using long yarn length around pom-pom center and tapestry needle, secure pom-poms to top of hat (See photos for a guide on placement)
