Easy DIY Pendant Necklace

I love to crochet jewelry because it is quick and creative.

I also love to collect beads and charms especially when they are on sale! 🙂

So, I came up with the Easy DIY Pendant Necklace design to put several of my pretty charms to good use.

For each necklace you just crochet a small circle with Size 3 crochet thread (There are a few variations I include below), attach the charm and put it on a necklace chain.

Easy-peasy!

And remember, if you are new to working with thread, you can always crochet this project with medium weight yarn and a 5.5mm hook to get the hang of the pattern first and then work in thread after you’ve practiced.

Supplies:

1. 1 skein Size 3 cotton crochet thread (1 skein will make many pendants)

2. 2.75mm crochet hook (This Clover hook is great! It has a silicone handle to prevent your hand from cramping)

3. Jewelry Pliers

4. Jewelry Charm (Anywhere from 1/2″ diameter to 2″ diameter would work)

4. Yarn needle

5. Necklace Chain (with clasp attached)

6. Jump rings (6-8mm)

7. Optional: Necklace clasp (if chain does not come with one)

Measurements:

(See photo below for how letters correspond to each circle)

A – 2 1/4″ diameter

B – 1 3/4″ diameter

C– 1 3/4″ diameter

D & E – 1 1/4″ diameter

Abbreviations and Stitches:

Adjustable Ring: Form a loop with yarn around hand; Draw working yarn through ring to create a working loop; ch 1 to lock ring in place

Sc (single crochet) = Insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk

Hdc (half double crochet) = YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook

Rev sc (reverse single crochet) = Work a single crochet but insert hk into next st to the RIGHT of current st (to the LEFT of current st if left-handed)

Sp = space

Hk = hook

Lp = loop

Sk = skip

RS = Right Side

YO = yarn over

Notes:

Follow the pattern below to make a circle that is slightly bigger than your jewelry charm

Work circle in a spiral and mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker

Instructions:

(All special stitches are in bold and italicized text and defined above)

Round 1: Work 6 sc in an adjustable ring.

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Round 3: (2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st) around. (18 sc)

Round 4: (2 sc in the next st, sc in each of the next 2 sts) around. (24 sc)

Round 5a: (Sl st in next st, 3 hdc in next st, sl st in next st) around. (8 petals) Fasten off.

For A (Light Tan circle): Work Rounds 1 – 4 above;

Round 5b: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 3 sts) around. (30 sc)

Round 6: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 4 sts) around. (36 sc)

Round 7: Repeat Round 5a (from above). Fasten off. (12 petals)

For B (Red Circle):

Work Rounds 1-4 and Round 5b (from above)

Round 6: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around. Fasten off.

For C (Pink circle):

Work Round 1-5a

For D & E (Blue and Green circles):

Work Rounds 1-3

Round 4: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around. Fasten off.

Finishing & Assembly:

Weave in ends

Attach charm to circle – Either open ring at top of charm, feed through stitch on top of circle and close ring or sew charm (using hole on top) to circle with matching thread and yarn needle (see photos)

Open jump ring with pliers

Attach a jump ring to top of crocheted circle and around necklace chain

Close jump ring
