This crochet dog hat is made with simple stitches and mostly medium weight acrylic yarn (Red Heart Super Saver). It works up quickly and has some fluffy yarn accents on the brim and ear flaps.

The doggie model is our sweet little Sadie – she is a mini-dachshund who loves to wear sweaters, hats and costumes throughout the day. Every time we put this bomber hat on her it makes us smile. It actually does a great job of keeping her head warm when she goes outside during the cold New England winters.

As you can see this hat includes holes for the ears which makes it fit nicely over the dog’s head.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Small

(Hat should fit smaller breeds – dog shown here in photo is a mini-dachshund weighing about 12 lbs. If you would like to make a smaller hat, use the same instructions below but use a smaller hook and/or thinner yarn. If you would like to make a slightly larger hat, you can try working with a double strand of medium weight yarn and larger hook.)

Supplies:

Red Heart Super Saver – 1 skein (plenty to make one hat) – Shocking Pink

Bernat Pipsqueak yarn – 1 skein (very small amount needed) – Whitey White

5.5mm hook

Tapestry needle

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together): Insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

ch = chain

YO = yarn over

sp = space

sk = skip

hk = hook

lp = loop

Notes:

First the top center of hat is crocheted

Then Side 1 is worked along side of rows of Center

Next Side 2 is worked in same manner as Side 1 but started on opposite end

Lastly the “fur-like” yarn is added at the brim and under the ear flaps and sewn to hat

Instructions:

(All special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above; A list of abbreviations is also included above)

Center –

Ch 7

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (6 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 3 – 5: Repeat Row 2

Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st; sc in each of next 5 sts. (7 sc)

Rows 7 & 8: Repeat Row 2

Row 9: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st; sc in each of next 6 sts. Turn. (8 sc)

Rows 10 – 15: Repeat Row 2

Row 16: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st; sc in each st across to last st; 2 sc in last st. Turn. (10 sc)

Rows 17 – 25: Repeat Row 2 – Do not fasten off.

Side 1 & 1 side of Ear Flap:

Row 1: Now working down the side of the rows, sc2tog across loops in end of next 2 rows; sc in each row across to last 2 rows; sc2tog across loops in end of last 2 rows. Turn. (23 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each of next 7 sts; sc2tog; sc in next st; sc2 tog; sc in each of next 7 sts; sc2tog. Turn. (19 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 sts; sc2tog, sc in each of next 7 sts; sc2tog, sc in last 3 sts. Turn. (16 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st st and in each of next 4 sts; Turn. (Leave remaining stitches unworked)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 sts; Turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. Fasten off.

Side 1 – other side of ear flap:

Row 4: Join with a sc to 1st st of Row 3 (of Side 1); sc in each of next 2 sts; sc2tog. Turn. (Leave remaining sts unworked)

Rows 5-8: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (4 sc)

*At end of Row 8, do not turn.*

Ch 7, sl st in front loop only of next sc on other side of ear hole; continuing to work in front loop only, sl st in last 2 sts. Turn.

Side 1 – Below Ear Hole:

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st and each ch across up to last 2 sts; sc2tog over last 2 sts; Turn. (13 sc)

Row 10: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across to last 2 sts; sc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sc)

Row 11: Repeat Row 10

Row 12: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 13-16: Repeat Row 12

Row 17: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across up to last 2 sts; sc2tog. Turn. (9 sc)

Row 18: Repeat Row 17 – Fasten off.

Side 2:

Repeat all stitches as for Side 1 starting on opposite end of Center (from where started Side 1)

Edging:

Work sl st edging around both sides of hat and around ear holes

White Fur Brim:

Row 1: With Wrong Side of hat facing, join with sc in 1st st at end of Center; sc in each of next 10 sts. Turn. (11 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Repeat Row 2

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across to last 2 sts; sc2tog. Turn. (9 sc)

Row 5: Repeat Row 4

Row 6: Repeat Row 2 – Fasten off.

White Fur under Ear Flaps:

Row 1: With Right Side of hat facing and working in back loops only, join with sc in 1st st on last row of ear flap; sc in each of next 7 sts. Turn. (8 sc)

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Finishing:

With tapestry needle and yarn tails, sew white fur to under side of ear flaps and sew brim to top of hat
