Crochet Headband

Crochet Headband

Here’s another fun fall project for you using the wonderful Velvet yarn – The Velvet Headband! This is a simple and quick crochet headband.

The stitch used in this I also incorporated into the Textured Trebles Pocket Shawl and the Recycle Crochet Floor Pillow (see these FREE patterns here and here) – I love how this stitch looks with thick yarn and I LOVE that it is easy to create with just a 2-row repeat!

If you saw last week’s Velvet Pumpkins (click here to see those), then you know I couldn’t resist buying this beautiful color of Yarn Bee’s Velvety Smooth yarn when I was in Hobby Lobby. And since I enjoyed crocheting with it so much, I had to create another quick fall project with it.

Supplies:

Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth yarn – Color: Pumpkin; 1 skein

K (6.5mm) hook

Jumbo Tapestry Needle

Measurement of head (around where headband will lay)

Optional: 2″ of black elastic; Black sewing thread and needle

Special Stitches and Abbreviations:

Tr (treble crochet) = YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) 3 times

Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) = Insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

YO = yarn over

sp = space

sk = skip

hk = hook

lp = loop

Notes:

Headband is worked back and forth in rows and then joined with elastic to create headband loop

Instructions:

Ch 4

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st st and next st, ch 1, sk next st, sc in each of last 2 sts. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across (including working a sc in ch-1 sp). Turn. (5 sc)

Row 6 (Right Side): Tr in unworked st below ch-1 sp, sk next st on working row, sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st, tr in same st as previous tr, sc in last st. Turn.

Row 7 (Wrong Side): Ch 1, sk 1st sc, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, sc in next tr. Turn. (5 sc)

**Make sure you only have 5 sc at the end of this row**

Repeat Rows 6 & 7 until headband measures 2-3″ less than total head measurement

**If you would like to use the elastic, then total headband length should be at least 3 inches shorter than head measurement – If you want to just join the 2 ends of the headband to create the loop (with no elastic), then make sure total headband length is at least 1 inch shorter than head measurement – The stitch and yarn create some give**

Ending Row 1: Ch 1, sk 1st st, sc2tog over the next 2 sts; sc in next ch-1 sp, sc2tog in last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sc)

Ending Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (3 sc)

Ending Row 3: Repeat Ending Row 2

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Finishing and Assembly:

Pin short ends together and test that headband fits snugly

With tapestry needle and yarn tails sew short ends of headband together

(Sometimes yarn looses its elasticity so you may want to have a join that uses a small piece of elastic instead)

Optional Join: Sew ends of elastic to either end of headband checking that headband will be snug enough – shorten elastic as needed to get the correct tension.

And there you have it – your Velvet Headband is complete! Super quick and simple, yes?
