One of the quickest and easiest gifts to give anyone are crocheted dishcloths. Everyone can use a couple and they can be handy either in the kitchen or in the bathroom (for washing your face or body – I like to call these “spa cloths”).
Since they are crocheted with cotton yarn they are durable, washable and machine dryable (is that a word? 🙂 ). They are practical and low maintenance. Package a few with some special soap and you have the perfect quick gift.
These dishcloths use a very simple stitch that is beginner-friendly but also gives great texture on both sides.

Measurements:
Approx. 8″ x 8″
Supplies:
1 ball of cotton dishcloth yarn (Colors shown in photo above: Yellow, Red and Aqua)
(Crafter’s Secret, Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream, or Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton)
5 mm crochet hook
Tapestry needle

Notes:
Dishcloth is worked back and forth in rows using a one-row repeat and then edged in the round
Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
hk = hook
st = stitch
YO = yarn over
lp = loop
Back bar of chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Back Loop Only = Insert hk only into the back lp at the top of the stitch

YO, sl st = YO, insert hk into next st; YO, pull through st AND through 2 lps on hk
Join with sc = With slip knot on hk, insert hk into st indicated, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk
Instructions:
(Remember ALL Special Stitches that are in bold and italicized text are explained in the list above)
Ch 25
Row 1 (Right Side): Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn. (24 scs)
Row 2: Ch 1, working in the back loops only of each st, (YO, sl st) in 1st st and in each st across. Turn. ( 24 YO-sl sts)
Rows 3-20: Repeat Row 2 until project is a square and Right Side of Row 1 is facing after turning.
Last Row: Ch 1, continuing to work in back loops only, sc in each st across. Do not fasten off.
Edging:
Now working down side of rows, work sc evenly along side; sl st in 1st sc of Row 1. Fasten off.
Join with sc to first st on opposite side; work sc evenly up along other side of rows; sl st in 1st sc or last row. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
And that’s it – Your Easy Beginner Dishcloth is complete!
