When my daughters were babies I loved putting them in hats. Not only did it keep them warm during the cold months but it made them even cuter and always made me smile.
Now you can find many hats and hoods with animal ears added on top which just kicks up the cuteness factor by 10-fold!
So, I thought it would be fun to create a hat design using one of my favorite textured stitches (it’s so easy and simple – you’ll love it, too!), some simple ears and the super soft and popular velvet yarn.

Let’s get on to crocheting!
Skill Level: Easy
Finished Measurements and Sizes:
3 months = 7” across x 5” tall (when laid flat)
6 months = 7 ½” across x 6” tall
Gauge:
Rounds 1 – 3 = 3″ diameter (see note after Round 3 of smallest size)
Supplies:
Yarn: Adore-a-ball Velvet Yarn – 1 skein (bought from Hobby Lobby)
(Colors shown in photo: Mint Charm (light green) and Sugarplum (lilac))
Hook: K/6.5mm
Stitch marker
Yarn needle
Notes:
Hat is worked from the top down in the round without joining so use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of your place
Special Stitches and Abbreviations:
The Special Stitches are written in the pattern with bold and italic text
Hhdc (herringbone half double crochet) = YO, insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp pulling through stitch AND first lp on hk; YO, pull through remaining 2 lps on hk
Rev sc (reverse single crochet) = Insert hk into next st to RIGHT of working lp; YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through all 3 lps on hk as carry stitch lps to the right (Left-handers do same steps except to the LEFT)
Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hook into st, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) = Insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; insert hk into next st, YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 3 lps on the hk
Ch = chain
Hk = hook
Sk = skip
Sp = space
Lp = loop
Sc = single crochet

Hat – Size 3 months
Ch 2
Round 1: 6 sc in 1st ch.
Round 2: Work 2 Hhdc in each st around (12 Hhdc)
Round 3: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in the next st) around. (18 Hhdc)
(At this point your circle should measure about 3″ across – if yours is bigger, then you need to use a smaller hook; if yours is smaller, then you need to switch to a larger hook)
Round 4: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in each of the next 2 sts) around. (24 Hhdc)
Round 5: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in each of the next 3 sts) around. (30 Hhdc)
Round 6: Hhdc in each st around.
Rounds 7-9: Repeat Round 6
Round 10: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off.
Hat – Size 6 months
Ch 2
Round 1: 6 sc in 1st ch.
Round 2: Work 2 Hhdc in each st around (12 Hhdc)
Round 3: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in the next st) around. (18 Hhdc)
Round 4: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in each of the next 2 sts) around. (24 Hhdc)
Round 5: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in each of the next 3 sts) around. (30 Hhdc)
Round 6: (2 Hhdc in the next st, Hhdc in each of the next 4 sts) around. (36 Hhdc)
Round 7 : Hhdc in each st around.
Rounds 7-10: Repeat Round 7
Round 11: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off.
Ears – Make 2:

Ch 4
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each of next 2 chs (3 sc) Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog over the next 2 sts, sc in the next st, sc2tog over the next 2 sts. Do not turn.
Now working down the side, sl st 3 to 4 times down the side; sl st across the bottom of the ear; sl st 3 to 4 times up the other side; Fasten off with a long tail for assembly.
Turn ear over so Row 1 becomes top and sew a slight gather along bottom edge (shown with arrow in photo above) using yarn tail. This makes the ear cup more and gives it some dimension.
Finishing:
Using photo as a guide sew ears to top of hat with yarn needle and yarn tails
Didn’t that work up fast? So soft and snuggly, right? 🙂
